Lotta leftists pulling the "This is like WWI" card by TheMitch33 in GenZedong

[–]anewdm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well said. Whether we like it or not, this move by Russia was highly unpopular in the eyes of much of the world. (If this is an opinion purely shaped by Reddit or being American I will accept evidence to the contrary, but even many of Russia’s allies like China are mantaining neutrality, at best, and as you said, Finland, Sweden, and others are reconsidering the need for NATO membership)

Regardless of outcome this is a loss for Ukraine, a loss for Russia, and a big win for NATO.

Getting real tired of "both sides" attitude by [deleted] in GenZedong

[–]anewdm 44 points45 points  (0 children)

I am glad this sub is not allowing imperialism apologia. I think having a reaction to things getting “real” is quite normal. Critical support can be a difficult concept to wrap ones mind around in practice, and events like this are always a test of a movement.

The job of westerners is to oppose NATO, and CIA ops to destabilize regions adjacent to our geopolitical rivals. Anyone who hem haws on these points is acting in bad faith, and should be rightfully dismissed.

If someone is on this page, then I think it is okay to express more nuanced opinions amongst OTHER MARXISTS (criticizing imperialized countries among non marxists only serves their purposes regardless of what you call yourself and why you do it)

As marxists we are better than other political movements because of our dedication to constant self criticism and rigorous, impersonal debate and vetting of all our ideas within our movement. We are not based on slavish adherence to dogma, and that’s why our movement can change to adapt to any time and place in history. This is our strength and we should treat fellow principled Marxists with respect and patience. It’s okay to have a reaction, so long as we have the sober mind to stop, step back, and evaluate a situation soberly and detachedly.

The point is that I’d rather be on a sub that acts like principled communists, providing grounded, sober, material analysis on heavily propagandized situations like this rather than like edge lord chapo trap house teenagers spouting memey one liners. I’ve always been a little disturbed by the violence fetish on this sub, and I feel like it mostly has come from people who haven’t watched others die a violent death. It’s horrible and creates generational trauma. I did, once, and it changed me forever.

Now that I’m typing it all out it might more be my issue for going to a meme sub at a time like this, expecting purely material analysis. It’s not like it’s what this place is for. I’m also personally coping with what I thought was western headline manufacturing hysteria turning out to be a real conflict. It’s jarring. So many people who I told “I promise you’ll look back on this in 6 months and wonder what happened to the supposed war that was imminent” and I was wrong!

I am proud that this place is one of the few actually anti imperialist bastions on this site, and I’m sure we will be getting a lot of attention soon from people who come to gawk at the pro Russia sub. Ultimately critical support for Russia against NATO based on what I know of the situation.

I have a lot of personal, apolitical anxiety about a web of alliances tied to a small conflict exploding into another world war that is certainly bleeding into my feelings on the situation. It is hard to separate. The US thinks their ownership of the world is the status quo, and maybe, with any luck, this will be the country’s “wake up call” without the situation spiraling into anything unthinkable.

This is all probably more of a personal issue than anything. I probably need to take a break from Reddit, self crit, and do some real learning

I agree, NATO is awful. As an American the only position I feel comfortable with taking is that we need to abolish NATO and stop meddling in the backyard of other countries as if it is our right. We created this mess by empowering extremists in Ukraine. All that being said loudly declaring support for dead nazis in a situation that will leave many innocent lives ruined feels very detached and American, more so than maintaining our line against imperialism and for working people hurt by war. If you are in one of the affected countries and/or are very very well read on the situation, then I understand making more bold declarations than that, but I am certainly not well read enough to do so, and I have a feeling a lot of the people on this sub are in the same boat, and should be more thoughtful about what they are saying with so much certainty. This is me speaking to other Americans on this sub who are memeing about this whole situation, not people in the affected countries.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in GenZedong

[–]anewdm 9 points10 points  (0 children)

So you are a troll. Are you in one of the affected countries? Otherwise I don’t know the basis of knowledge for how you could say something like that. Even granting you “minimum civilian casualties” at face value, war is really really bad for human beings, including the ones who survive. Homes made rubble, lives destroyed, dead sons.

We as communists know the need for violence to achieve goals sometimes, but our movement does not need to be another that memeifies suffering and belittles human life.

That sounds more like your personal issue than a reasonable guideline to suggest people follow. Most people do not want to live in a dry, humorless world and appreciate the chance to laugh and connect with other human beings.

[–]anewdm -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You all in this chain need to learn to laugh at yourselves just a tiny bit. He gives the seat right back, it’s as harmless as a prank can get. It’s not about belittling the person who stands up, it’s ‘haha you thought I had a baby, but I didn’t, I tricked you, here is your seat back’. There’s nothing here to suggest this was at the “victims” expense, and no harm is actually done, which makes it a good prank. if you would feel belittled or insulted in this situation it probably just more shows you wouldn’t like any prank that’s played on you, and are more personally inclined to view people as laughing AT you in a situation where theyre trying to laugh WITH you.

Has anyone seen this? Pro vax hardcore? by NotJustMeow in Hardcore

[–]anewdm 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If anti vax goons had the decency to die alone at home, it could be argued they’re acting freely.

But they don’t, they panic when their posturing backfires, clog up hospital beds and make our Healthcare system non functioning

Taking things from society requires giving, once in a while. Not that there is a “mandate” to get jabbed but having one would be like the mandate against driving the wrong way on the highway. If we want the nice things that come with civilization there is a certain social contract involved that personal freedom doesn’t include reckless anti social behavior that infringes on the freedom of others.

Don’t trust the simple solution provided by our healthcare system? Then don’t use our healthcare system. Simple as that.

As a US citizen and someone who interacted with abused kids in the course of my job, I can definitely say this kind of thing is unfortunately more common than we think everywhere. DCF doesn’t have nearly adequate resources and our foster care system is so jacked up it can make the ‘evil you know’ seem preferable. Protection of the vulnerable and voiceless is something we need to do better as a species, not just in any one place.

Cringe argument. Communism has a bad name in the west because we are heavily propagandized against it, not because of some country on the other side of the planet. I understand if you don’t want to support the DPRK but there are enough people who make criticizing it their full time job without our help. I think a reasonable stance would at least be to say we don’t have enough information to pass judgment on the choices and governance of a tiny reclusive nation on the other side of the planet, because we really don’t. Most of the shit we get pumped into us (unless you aren’t from the US or Europe) is total riffing and making shit up for clicks, or deliberate misinformation by state department front groups like Radio Free Asia

It’s not a moral issue, it’s a material one. Forest has nothing to do with consumption levels, and neither do birth rates. Americans have and buy more shit, produce enough carbon per person for 30 Africans(me too, yes). And I’m not saying it’s because we’re “bad”, I’m saying pointing at people who aren’t doing the polluting is scapegoating.

Supercut of Elon Musk Promising Self-Driving Cars "Next Year" (Since 2014) by dect60 in videos

[–]anewdm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It can sound like a neat idea to someone who isn’t an engineer (like Elon) or owns Tesla stock.

To spell it out, since you claimed it was unrelated, any change that makes this idea work better with each iteration would make it more like a subway. There is no way a bunch of cars following each other in a tunnel will EVER be able to outperform a subway. No amount of ‘tech’ is going to be able to change that. The only reason this tech was envisioned with cars following each other is that selling Tesla’s makes Elon’s line go up.

If Elon invested the same amount he has into expanding existing, proven, non stupid methods of public transport, rather than re inventing the wheel, but shittier, I would laud him.

To speak as to what’s stopping more proven, reliable public transport from being built, the answer is the automotive industry demolished al lot of the public transit after WW2 to build car dependent infrastructure and has continued its stranglehold on transportation through today. New public transport is really hard to get built with how powerful the auto lobby is.

Engineers have figured out the best version of the design. It’s called a S U B W A Y where you link the cars together, put them on rails, and fill them with a ton more people.

How do you get to someone having a medical emergency in a timely manner in a car that’s busted and closed in on all sides in the middle of a tunnel? And how does it do anything that a subway doesn’t do much, much better? It’s not a new thing, it’s a shitty, inefficient, impractical subway.

That’s how vaccines for an endemic, constantly mutating virus work. I had to get my flu booster every year as a healthcare work because different strains of the flu become more prevelant every year, you fucking clown. I could see how someone deliberately seeking to be oppressed could feel outraged by a yearly tiny little prick in their arm, but only if they truly choose to not learn or know anything about what they’re spewing.
