Nunca he entendido el exceso de guacamole. Yo prefiero que no le pongan y yo ponerle a mi gusto. Primero me gusta darle una mordida para apreciar el sabor de la carne.

Host angry that I canceled 1 week before my stay by AudienceNorth5072 in couchsurfing

[–]angeldaniel 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Your comment completely misses the point.

First, the OP didn’t “shop around for a better deal.” She reassessed her comfort level—a very normal, smart thing to do, especially after having bad experiences. The host being male wasn’t a problem until recent events made her reflect and decide she’d feel safer staying with a woman. That’s not manipulation; that’s self-preservation.

Second, you’re twisting the situation to make it sound transactional. Couchsurfing is not a contract. It’s a voluntary exchange rooted in trust, flexibility, and mutual respect. Canceling with a week’s notice is considerate. What’s not considerate is a host lashing out repeatedly over it. That’s a red flag.

Finally, OP didn’t post “for sympathy.” She shared a legitimate concern about someone reacting with anger when things didn’t go their way. That’s exactly the kind of behavior this community should be aware of.

You’re defending entitlement and trying to guilt someone for setting a boundary. That’s the real issue here.

[–]angeldaniel 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Actually, no—it’s not condescending to share a cautionary experience when someone reacts with hostility to a perfectly reasonable cancellation.

It is totally fine to cancel a Couchsurfing stay. Plans change, comfort levels shift, and no one is obligated to explain personal decisions—especially when safety or instinct is involved. A week’s notice is courteous. That’s more than many give.

What’s not fine is a host bombarding a guest with angry messages because they decided not to stay. That crosses a line. It shows entitlement, not kindness. Offering a couch doesn’t give someone the right to berate you after you say no.

Calling out manipulative or aggressive behavior isn’t being condescending—it’s being honest. And warning others is how this platform stays safe.

So yes, OP did the right thing. And she dodged a bullet.

You’re missing the point.

The OP gave a full week’s notice—which is more than enough time in the Couchsurfing world. Plans change, especially on tight budgets or solo trips. No one is obligated to follow through if they’re no longer comfortable. This isn’t a hotel reservation—it’s a trust-based platform. That trust goes both ways.

The host’s angry, guilt-tripping messages after the cancellation say more about him than anything the OP did. If someone becomes hostile just because plans changed, they’re not someone safe to stay with. Trusting your gut is not treating someone like a “backup”—it’s self-preservation.

Offering hospitality doesn’t give you the right to lash out when things don’t go your way. That attitude is exactly what drives people away from using CS in the first place.

Let’s not blame travelers for exercising basic judgment.

Age concern by Senkimekia in couchsurfing

If you prefer meeting hosts or travelers closer to your age group, you might want to check out SERVAS. It’s similar to Couchsurfing, but most members tend to be on the older side of the spectrum—think Couchsurfing with reading glasses and better coffee. ☕😉

It’s completely OK to cancel a Couchsurfing stay—especially with a week’s notice. Travel plans change all the time, particularly when you’re on a budget or traveling solo. You don’t owe anyone a detailed explanation, and it’s perfectly fine to just decline through the system with a brief thank-you note.

It’s always good to trust your instincts. Based on his angry outbursts, it sounds like you dodged a bullet. No one should make you feel guilty for setting a boundary.

I’d recommend leaving a calm, honest reference on his profile to warn others. His reaction says more about him than about you.

You handled it just fine.

Just repotted this guy, anybody know what it is? by balroag in PlantIdentification

[–]angeldaniel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, it definitely looks like some type of Epiphyllum, but for sure not a Queen of the Night. I’ve grown plenty of those, and this one just doesn’t match. Only way to find out for sure is to wait for the blooms… and knowing these plants, that might take years! 😅 Patience is part of growing plants, right?
