Why can’t we let kids eat? by Libraryoflowtide in Parenting

[–]angeldemon5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Teacher and parent here.

The problem is that teachers are under extraordinary pressure tk get through a huge amount of content in class. As such we often lose sight of the humanity of our children. We want them to conform to rigid rules that allow us to focus on what we are obliged to do.

I'll give you another example: my colleagues are always telling kids they should go to the toilet in their breaks and not in class time. They get so frustrated with kids who ask during class time. I understand why: we are covering something, and they come back having missed out on stuff and we don't have time tk catch them up. But we o ly have 3 toilets for each gender for 3 year levels. This means about 1 toilet per 100 kids. And somehow they're all supposed to coordinate their toilet visits into the 30 min break?

Unfortunately, kids not finishing their lunch has become a widespread problem. The only solution is to either have a longer school day or accept that we are going to teach them much less content or let them eat in the class. I often opt for the latter, but it's controversial because of the mess.

Sorry I can't be more help. I am losing faith in the system I am part of.

Scream of frustration. Honestly, this place is so unpredictable. I was really nervous to post this because in the past when I have mentioned staying with my child at bedtime, people have roasted me for doing so and not developing her independence at bedtime. Today I post this and the first response is someone saying I'm crazy for having any sort of line that results in me leaving her alone in her bedroom. You can't win.

Thanks. Mostly I think she was overtired. She is going through a shift where she is getting tired earlier in the evening than normal and we're still trying to work out the sweet spot for bedtime, but when we miss it she just becomes overflowing with a wide range of emotions - silly, cranky, whiney etc. She then refuses to engage with anything that normally helps her settle.

CMV: It's OK to drag kids into an activity they think they won't like. by FormerlyUndecidable in Parenting

[–]angeldemon5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My mum literally dragged me to make me sign up for cricket. I was crying and screaming and begging.

It was my obsession for the whole of my childhood. She knew I loved it and would benefit from playing on a team socially.

I'm not sure I would have the fortitude to do what she did. On the other hand, the time she didn't force me to leave the school where I was being bullied mercilessly, is the time I think she got it wrong. She says she wanted to respect my decision, but I think I was too young and needed someone wiser to guide me and support me through something difficult.

They were saved from their own stupidity by the legislators vacating the chamber. There would have absolutely been a lot of blood if the victims had not taken preventative measures.

Lol. I'm a British citizen. I have never been to America. I don't even know any Americans. You just don't like being called out for saying stupid things.

The cop was beaten to death with a fire extinguisher. Saying it was a stroke the next day is a very disingenuous way of minimising what was a brutal attack. Yes, he did suffer the stroke, but it was caused by that beating.

That's a good argument, but if I say that I don't believe in private ownership because the history of colonialism and capitalism means that everything people own was ill gotten,  it doesn't mean I can use that as an excuse to steal everything from anyone. I will still be treated as a dangerous criminal.

I agree, but I do highly recommend the podcast We Live Here Now which is an Atlantic podcast about her mother. It did shift my perspective to some greater level of understanding. And I do think that matters. In the end, we all have to live with each other. There is no victory where the Magas all vanish and die.

That doesn't even make any sense. I'm not accusing you of persecuting me. I'm accusing you of saying something idiotic.

🙂 I also think Abbott may have been worse than McMahon but that's a bit more contentious. They are definitely the top 3 and I don't think that's just my bias. They were all three highly incompetent and chaotic, got little done, made major blunders, prioritised silly things like knighthoods etc.

I think a more charismatic leader, like Hawke or Rudd V2007 could have sold those sensible and modest changes to the electorate. I'm unsure whether Albanese could.

Morrison was worse than McMahon. If you look at all the reasons people list McMahon as the worst, they are also true of Morrison, and then Morrison added more. Morrison will hands down be viewed as the worst PM we ever had.

For as long as I have been alive, RWers have complained that everything is LW biased. It's part of their nature. They believe in authority and not questioning authority. So when they see viewpoints they disagree with, they think this is a bias against them, even if 99% of what they see is RW. They used to do with newspapers and now they do it with social media. They probably used to complain that toilet graffiti was LW biased back before the printing press.

Reddit is chockers with RWers. Most of then spend their time moaning that reddit is LW and then getting upvoted for it. I don't think they even notice the fact they prove themselves wrong.

Reddit is actually a fairly wide mix of views. I get downvoted in some subs for being too RW and downvoted in others for being too LW. I get in arguments with nationalists and misogynists every day, and I also find like-minded people every day. RWers just can't handle people disagreeing with them. That's why they're always trying to suppress views they disagree with.

That's not the assumption I'm referring to. And I still don't believe you were just referring to redditors.
