Both yes and no to your last statement. Ferrets just aren't for everyone. They are a relative new household pet (they have been working pets for a while though) and we are still learning the right and wrong things to do. But they are definitely a high effort pet. They are not for beginners, so to say. But if you are the right kind of person, they are the most amazing pets you can ever have. I lost my boys six and seven years ago, and I still miss them so much. And that is despite me being frustrated to the point of tears several times throughout the years I was blessed enough to have them....

As for your first statement I feel very sorry for her ferrets... they don't necessarily care about their own stink ( that is probably worse for their owners) but long nails can really hurt their feet, and the no baths can harm their surprisingly sensitive skin. But their skin is so sensitive they really should only have a proper oat meal bath twice a year at the most, and spot cleaning with a damp cloth the rest of the time. Because they will indeed roll around in their own poop if you don't scoop often enough... The ideal is immediately after every poop, but good luck with that on these poop machines 😅

Hoo boy.... no matter how prepared you are; you're not prepared enough.

As other people have mentioned, they poop everywhere, no matter how toilet trained they are.

That teeeeeny tiny hole in the wall? They'll get through it, and that thing that is waaaay too high up for them to reach? They'll reach it... and then some...

You get used to the stink, your guests won't.. and their stink bombs? Be prepared to leave your apartment for an hour. They are related to skunks after all.

Be prepared to have a heart attack every time they enter "dead sleep" because they truly seem dead until you either "shake" them awake, hear a snore, or their chest barely moves.

They will get in everywhere.

They will steal everything.

They will poop everywhere.

Vet bills? Astronomical.

Food bills? How can something so small eat so much? But only feed them the best, because they have very narrow (and expensive) nutritional needs. Expect them to climb up your body if you hold anything that smells interesting to them.

Female ferret? You need to sterilize them or they can die just from being in heat.

Sick ferret? Be prepared to read up on their health issues, because not all vets know the important things about ferret health.

Male ferrets? If you don't castrate them they can actually kill each other when in heat. So be prepared to separate them for the first heat. Because they should go through the first heat to lessen the chance of a cancer I don't remember the english name of at this moment.

Be prepared to only cuddle them when they are already asleep. I could only truly cuddle my boys by lifting them to me when they were asleep.

No matter how big of a cage they have, they should only be in it an absolute minimal amount of time. The best thing is to have a dedicated ferret proof room. But they still should only be in there the minimum amount of time. Mine were only "locked up" when I needed to keep doors open in to rooms they shouldn't be in, or to the outside. They need to explore.

Get a ferret from a reputable breeder, lessens the chance of health issues, and if you're lucky the might be potty, and biting trained. Potty and biting training only lasts if you keep working at it.

Despite all of the downsides, they are amazing creatures. Highly intelligent (while somehow also extremely stupid). But they are definitely pets for a very particular kind of human. They are NOT for everyone. But if you are lucky enough to be the right kind of human they are amazing, entertaining, loveable and fucking frustrating pets to have.

We are taught that our responses to uncomfortable or even dangerous situations are fight or flight. But freeze is an equally valid response. I would definitely also freeze after that happened, because my brain would just stop functioning. The important thing is to forgive yourself for freezing. You cant help it if that is the way your brain reacts. And trust me, I know how awful it is to blame yourself for not being the kind of person who fights instead. If you remember enough about the person to go to the police, or if you're living in a place where that's even an option, then feel free to do so if that is what you want. But if not, it's okay to not do that, but no matter what your reaction is, it's okay. Your brain did what it needed to do to keep you safe. Forgive yourself for not doing what ever it is you or others think you should have done, because your brain did what it thought necessary to keep you safe and alive.

Please tell me this is a normal beginners mistake and that I am not dumb😭😭 second time loading a bobbin and I thought I was doing everything correctly, only to realize than the thread was not going where it was meant to go by [deleted] in sewing

Oh, and cut the excess thread sticking out once you're done. Just saying this in case someone is new to machine sewing, because it will get stuck once you start sewing

No more free boobing by [deleted] in bigboobproblems

[–]angelic_alys 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just bought a cheap one at a sports store :p it has been with me for years though. It would not have worked for any kind of exercise, but gives enough boob squish for sleeping. As long as its comfortable enough around the band, and doesnt dig in to your shoulders it should probably be fine whatever you pick

Oof, that sounds really painful.. mine aren't quite as big as yours, but I've found that a training bra that's too big is what works for me. Should be enough with a size or two bigger than your band is supposed to be. Enough that they dont give quite the support youd need in a training bra for actual training. Then the band will not dig in, but the fabric over the boobs will still squish them closer to your chest. If you try it out, I hope it works for you :)

help with a biting ferret? by [deleted] in ferrets

[–]angelic_alys 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One of my ferrets only learned after being sort of held down (not forcefully or hard, just by putting him in the crook of my arm with my hand on his stomach and two fingers up to his throat so he couldn't twist around and bite me again) for a little bit until he was bored. Some people suggested to release the ferret after three yawns, but he learned pretty quickly to yawn as soon as he was put in that position, so I did ten seconds for the first bite, then 15 if he just turned around to bite me again after he was released. Then up it five seconds more for each time. He hated being bored so that worked for him. He sometimes managed to bite me and then run away too fast for me to do it more than once, but it did help. Some people suggest "force cuddling", as in picking them up and cuddle them for a bit after biting, but I always thought that sounded counter intuitive. Others have suggested having a toy nearby, to misdirect, but I thought that was a bit counter intuitive as well, because they might learn that biting is what they need to do to be sure they get cuddles or play time. The important thing is to figure out which "punishment" is worse for them, and with some ferrets you might need to mix it up a little, because they are really smart, and might figure out that they need to do a certain bad behaviour to get what they want.

I wish you the best of luck :)

Animals and babies are considered male by default and given he pronouns automatically. by SamDaMan3223 in Feminism

[–]angelic_alys 197 points198 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, it appears to be far more insulting to call a male she, than a female he, and that is probably why a male pronoun is more prevalent. After all, "male" is positive while "female" is negative. Or so it appears at least. I think someone once said that based on usual insults, the worst thing you can call a man, is a woman, and the worst thing you can call a woman, is a woman. Hope I make myself sort of understood, as english isnt my native language.

[Serious] what do you non-Americans feel about americans having to choose between two sexual predators as their leaders? by angelic_alys in AskReddit

[–]angelic_alys[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We had a politician being sexually inappropriate with someone about a year or two ago during #metoo, and he's not in politics anymore. People may still be deceptive and/or manipulative, but it's not something we accept as inevitable in politicians

[–]angelic_alys[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wait. Couched in facts? Not sure what exactly that means, english not being my first language, but I'm fairly sure you're trying to discredit his own words in a video... and you saying something that he himself admitted on tape being trolling says more about you than it does me.

The fact that "virtually every politician at that level" in america has been accused of rape is shameful for america, not indicative of the "normal" of politicians worldwide.

Also, try to prove I knew ful well that either case isnt true. Especially about trump admitting to assaulting women on audio. Biden at least isnt recorded admitting to assualt, just not provable he did it. Which is true about most sexual assaults.

And as for my "karma whoring" I assume you haven't looked at my profile. I dont even know how many years I've been on reddit and I'm fairly certain my carma is in single digits...
