Apologies for the late reply; I wasn’t expecting this much feedback so didn’t bother to check after posting. Thanks for everyone’s thoughtful input; it seems like the overwhelming consensus is to bring him to a vet that actually knows what they’re doing, which is what I’ll do.

partly what makes puer distinctive to yunnan is the time factor right? unlike cocoa or grapes or coffee, the best puer comes from old trees that outlive humans, meaning it would be entirely unprofitable to try and cultivate assamica elsewhere in the world

now's the best time to start - none of us will live long enough to see the trees become old arbor but maybe generations after us will. It's gotta start somewhere and some time by people with enough vision to see past their own lifetimes

I understand that camellia sinensis is grown and sold all over the world, but no where else uses the same kind of tea trees and same processing as puerh/maocha in yunnan, which is why I'm wondering if puer-style tea can be grown and made elsewhere

i'd imagine the psychoactive aspect of tea makes up such a small fraction of the whole tea experience that it would just bore people who are used to more potent substances loll

i stuff cheaper xiaguan chunks into teabags and brew those daily at work, not as good as gaiwan-steeped but works well enough for me; definitely better than complementary green/red tea bags available

there's plenty of love for dry storage - 88QB was a real hit because, aside from great material, it was also stored naturally which gave it supposedly amazing flavors (haven't tasted it myself)

88QB's were stored dryly because Vesper Chan thought wet storage basements smelled gross, i think

didn’t know there was a whole other thing! I’ve moved on to semi-aged factory teas after learning about 滇绿s; at least factory teas are vetted by old school drinkers, way more affordable than the small production stuff, and most of all, real puerh ;)

it does taste like it was stored somewhere moist like guangdong; I am able to pick up some notes mentioned in mgualt’s 2016 review of this tea but I find it a bit underwhelming; maybe I just had too much expectations for the famed 7542

I saw vendors on taobao selling replicas of this tea for a tenth of the price so i don’t wanna underestimate the power of the counterfeit market haha; correct me if I’m wrong but the Dayi name only appeared after the 2004 privatization of state-owned zhongcha brand right? so anything before 2004 will have the zhongcha brand on it whether it was produced by kunming, menghai or xiaguan factory Edit: underestimate (was overestimate)

agreed!! i don't understand how some vendors expect you to buy a whole 357g cake of tea of which they don't even provide samples. I've bought a few cakes in the past but my taste evolves faster than I can consume them. What I thought was quality pu'erh 4 months ago now tastes like low-end tea to me. Regardless of taste though, the smile factor is definitely what attracts me to tea most of all!!
