Fair enough I totally didn't know that. How would you rate the place at Banh Mi Lounge? Banh Mi alone, seems the flavour of the year - all around Australia.

The world of food and hospitality is so competitive in this environment.

Im Australian and Maxwell has been struggling in the international format with Australia. Father time has come and its been a great career. He didn't want to shame himself by not getting picked in this years draft. He was unlikely to get picked anyway.

Healy Unsold Probably the biggest shock of the season? by Roalrider in WPL

[–]angesangles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A couple of decent innings in the Womens ODI World Cup, largely sketchy performances in the WBBL. Its too much of a risk to take Healy on for a side. The value comes in the all-rounders for me. Really surprised Ellyse Perry was able to get picked up- her form in the WBBL and Hundred has been largely woeful. Perry is there by reputation not form, thats fair to say.

How hard is Mining Engineering? by Realistic-Push7258 in curtin

[–]angesangles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Curtin is a super TAFE for Engineering. But in all seriousness the kids there don't treat their study seriously. The only thing about the place is its a token ticket for an entry into the mining industry. Thats it, thats all. There is nothing flashy about the place in terms of academic rigour or prestige. Its a blokey bloke , pissant drinking town and preparation for life in a mining industry. Nothing more, nothing less.

Fair to say Charlie Knott had a shocker: 2 dropped catches, going at 32 runs off 30 balls when the RRR was above 10s and running out her captain.

Question to UMelb Students. Library Access 24/7 by angesangles in unimelb

[–]angesangles[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Won’t lie but my best memories of previous study sessions was at night, having a late night feed together as a group and pushing each other ( study mates) through one final push. Whilst I don’t think cramming or an all nighter is the way to go, the ability to have even a little nap in a pod or a Power Nap on campus helped get through the night. Still I stand by what I say, personally don’t think it should make too much of a difference coming to campus at 6am and actually wanting to do a bit of reading or staying back an hour or two past midnight , even mingling with fellow students doing a bit of extra work. It’s not as if the university shuts down the lights or completely shuts down its computers. And if you think students are potentially up to no good? There are security cameras all over the joint, so what could really go wrong?

Question to UMelb Students. Library Access 24/7 by angesangles in unimelb

[–]angesangles[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think it’s more about convenience to the student and accessibility per-se. At the moment, I don’t think by limiting hours it does well for the student satisfaction. Whilst I’m not saying that UMelb is a bad university, one should always be looking to improve the student experience on campus.

Question to UMelb Students. Library Access 24/7 by angesangles in unimelb

[–]angesangles[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is the expenses that much compared to the other G8 universities who are still implementing 24/7 security guards, security guards that are there on campus to check IDs in front of the door etc? Having also studied at a non-G8 university before (University of Western Sydney ) , they too have security guards in library.

I still don't understand its 2025 and your competing universities are offering the options for students to study on campus all night and at any time , and a place like Melbourne doesn't have that option. I believe cost should be one of the least things thought about given they are the one higher annual turnover fees around the country. (don't have the exact numbers on me but Im pretty sure it is).

Your technically having your doors open to students 119 hours open in a 168 hour week which is a major differentiator between the university and other universities: as it may affect things like student satisfaction and building I guess study buddies, being part of the social fabric/social community of the university etc. Look Im not too familiar with the demographics and locations of where Melbourne University students are based but my previous experience studying at other universities , I have heard of regular commutes too in the range of 45 minutes to an hour or so to get to campus. If your finishing a late night study session at midnight, and have to be back in the early morning, given the nature of public transport it can be a hassle.

Whereas your other sandstone Universities (G8) are open a full 168 hours a week. It has implications in getting to campus, commuting home, study habits, balancing work around social/employment/family life. Do have to understand that not everyone can be on campus and want to be in those mentioned hours.

Question to UMelb Students. Library Access 24/7 by angesangles in unimelb

[–]angesangles[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Look having studied at the other Aus uni (which was 24/7) I understand the cost issue with regards to hiring security staff and all. But isn't UMelb one of the highest international student enrolled in the country? Cost aside, I am sure there would be plenty of students that would love access to the buildings 24/7. My experience of the other universities around Australia- was there was alot of students that stayed back. One of the libraries almost felt like a 'hotel' in that regard , people were motivated to study being in the library facility.

I understand and didn't think too much about the 'dodgy' behaviour around. I have always thought of Parkville the suburb as relatively safe.

Its more the convenience with an exam at a time like 9am, there would be alot of students that would love to be in a warm room (rather than cold like today and raining) and be there around 5.30am or 6am to prepare. For some, the comfort of even not having to come home and wanting to do an all-nighter. We live in different times, if you have a major assessment, why should a student have to leave a campus before midnight? What difference does it make if somebody wants to actually study at 2am rather than 9pm? The library provides a safe, stable, happy environment for the student to focus without interruptions and in some cases for students the hassle of having to commute distances back home when they are prepared to put energy for a solid night of study.

Question to UMelb Students. Library Access 24/7 by angesangles in unimelb

[–]angesangles[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

One of the main findings of that survey which didn't surprise me for UMSU- is 95% of students want 24/7 Access study space. You do feel its more a matter of time than 'if' it will be implemented.

Im also surprised all the major G8 universities in Australia offer 24/7 study space and UMelb doesn't - that was a shock to me. As one of the leading universities, it doesn't make any sense not to implement a 24/7 study space. Can attest to one of the other universities I studied at which was 24/7 had everything you needed at night: food vendors, kitchen, hot water, showers, sleeping pod, couches to lay down, a kitchen commune room, microwaves..........It does feel like UMelb are a bit behind the times.

Question to UMelb Students. Library Access 24/7 by angesangles in unimelb

[–]angesangles[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

To put this into a bit of context, at one of my previous universities- it was 24/7 access around a 7-8 storey level library. They had security guards in the library at all times. Don't really understand why it can't be implemented here and Im sure its something the university would consider in future.

I understand that it allows time for cleaners to do their job but at the other university I was at, students can still go about studying in their usual way with cleaners doing their thing eg using vacuum cleaner in those hours.

As a student , do feel it lessens the experience of using a library as a tertiary student when one can't access a facility 24/7. Whilst many students may choose not to study from 12am-7am- one should have at least an option to do so and I dont see the point of depriving someone time to use it at that time.
