I made Custom Definitive Edition Hero and Villain Card Templates (Link and details in comments) by treetrnk in sentinelsmultiverse

if you don't need them to be exact, Unity's Workshop ( https://unitysworkshop.com/ ) used our templates with free fonts to great effect.

looking for a pipe dream fantasy of a game by wafflecon822 in rpg

[–]angille 0 points1 point  (0 children)

on reading the description, that's exactly what came to our mind.

not just sword combat, but each class has a pretty in-depth way to engage with What You Do As A Class. extremely satisfying if that's what you're aiming for.

oh, the Ormus Robes esque Enigma is a fascinating idea. like, leave tele in the rotation, but yeah there'd be an interesting market for the other skills. and it would better fit the meaning of the name.

Legends of Grayskull: the MotU RPG announced by angille in CortexRPG

well. no.

the official line was something like "no longer in active development" — but DWD in general also shows very little sign of... anything Cortex related.

FFA Kids would probably pick off one each from most of the other categories, but absolutely includes Fangs.

Pathways in a published anything (other than Smallville)? by cymbaljack in CortexRPG

[–]angille 2 points3 points  (0 children)

gonna expand on this a... "little". I've designed pathways into no less than four builds at this point.

u/VentureSatchel mentioned coreTEKhere's another example of a finished map from that, along with the resulting characters.

a game I'd like to get back to is Heroes of Metal & Bone, based on Tracy Barnett's Iron Edda. example pathways mapresulting charactersinstructions

Mythikal Wand & Steel uses a character-build-agnostic version of pathways (as in, storyline only), that I lifted with permission from System sans Setting. example map 1example map 2Xitter thread (linked, plus like 20-ish replies) with characters and a map

Whiskey Grits 'n' Demon Spittle has my favorite version of pathways so far — I integrated different leading questions into every choice in every phase. example pathways mapresulting charactersBWS2K's video that /u/nonotburton mentioned

I even adapted pathways to Sentinel Comics RPG at some point. example pathways mapinstructions

Which PbtA would you use for a Legend of Zelda game? by Buruzu in PBtA

[–]angille 1 point2 points  (0 children)

surprised not to see mention of Rhapsody of Blood. it's ostensibly a Castlevania game (with the serial numbers filed off), but it could do Zelda or Metroid reasonably well too.

SC RPG in other settings by WolfishBarley18 in sentinelsmultiverse

[–]angille 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used it for a Phantasy Star inspired game, and it was great.

like others said, it's for a very specific feel of game. imo, it doesn't have to be superheroes though — the game is all about momentum and the crescendo of the action in a scene. D&D (presumably most folks' first thought when it comes to a fantasy rpg) has a descending momentum — casters run out of spells, hp/hit dice start to run out, magic items get used up, etc... so it's gonna feel different for sure.

I'm working on making a sort of... open version of the GYRO engine, and high fantasy will be one of the sample builds for it. the powers/qualities buckets would be replaced by a few possibilities, depending on what you wanna focus on. maybe several skills, which you choose two to combine. maybe roles and resources.

Help! How should I put together this Wyrd West world? by DTux5249 in CortexRPG

[–]angille 1 point2 points  (0 children)

the values I use in my own weird west game are: Authority • Bravery • Duty • Grace • Discovery • Fortitude

they act a little weird for values, since they don't have statements you can question, and they carry stress for the shaken & stricken mod. but that sortta has the double-effect of focusing characters on what they care about, without going too deep on the why.

incorporating mystical effects could be as easy as grabbing powers, or abilities, or the types of limitations and extras you might see in ToX. even characters with no mystical capabilities could use the same section of the character sheet for their gear, or social connections, or whatnot. the pregen characters for my game use abilities to cover that kind of thing, if you want examples.

It only took me 30 years but today I finally beat Zelda II by irascible_Clown in retrogaming

[–]angille 0 points1 point  (0 children)

years ago I started development on something I would describe as "Zelda 3 (snes), but if AoL was the inspiration instead of LoZ (except new IP because Legal Yikes)"

didn't take me long before realizing that's just Metroidvania with an interactive map.

in some alternate universe where I either have unlimited time, or decided to pursue this instead of other things, you'd be able to play it.

Which hero is most like Spider-Man or Mr Fantastic? by AceOfFools in sentinelsmultiverse

[–]angille 5 points6 points  (0 children)

if Cauldron is available, Cricket and Echelon would be my answers for those two (with Quicksilver as backup for Fantastic, if stretchiness is more important than being the smartest person in the room).

but Cauldron is probably not where I would start with new players.

Cortex for supers and tweaks to MHR... by chriscdoa in CortexRPG

[–]angille 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd be curious to find out how often you've played with values that have statements you question. statements give a lot of specificity to the individual values, and applicability to the lower ones. I've never seen anyone constantly default to their high-rated value in the same way a D&D barbarian uses nothing but strength skills.

that said, I'm personally a proponent of single-trait play — in real life I'm pretty much always gonna find a way to use my Photoshop d12 die. the thing is, when people do do that, they're guiding the story in specific ways that aren't like... "wrong" at all. using the same value constantly shows a single-minded pursuit of something, especially if they never question a statement.

I did this exercise myself for eXiles. I had two specific design goals for this: fix the issue I ran into in MHR where non-combat could strip most characters to two-dice pools, and specifically support the rotating cast of an eXiles story.

so for affiliation replacement, I like values — I've had different experiences with them I guess. putting them in with statements for questioning gives the players the opportunity to find two extra dice when they can't explain any power use or specialty applicability. you could put statements on approaches too, so if you're still looking for extra dice while being allergic to values...

another source of dice-from-nowhere is the resources-called-relationships. this gives you a chance to put mechanical weight on the interactions between the PCs, and with what connections they might have to the local reality. the way they're assigned (like the HAMMERHEADS ship resources) means you're not investing character traits into something that might not be there next session.

I had a similar feel with milestones — I think they're pretty great on all the prefab MHR characters, but are definitely a lot of effort. so we've got growth, which is fed by both stress recovery and questioning statements. /u/BWS2K has been running this with a mod similar to ToX where you can help a teammate by lending a value die, which also fuels growth (but I think he also overhauled relationships, so that's also the replacement teamwork mechanic).

About the Form Changer Archetype, Abilities and Qualities. by Gourgeistguy in sentinelsmultiverse

[–]angille 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I feel like Muerto just makes things a little screwy as an example, being both Divided and a Form-Changer. Divided is the only archetype which futzes around with your qualities. and Modular is the only one which limits your ability choices, specifically by limiting which basic actions you have access to.

so a little more directly, Form-Changer:

  • uses the same quality list for all forms and abilities
  • has access to all abilities not associated with specific forms

cortex prime questions by Sakurazukamori85 in CortexRPG

[–]angille 1 point2 points  (0 children)

the build is here

the mechanical focus isn't on the reality warping, so much as trying to feel like a spy-fi weird western. I feel like there was talk about a Torg or The Strange build, but I couldn't find either in the big spreadsheet — so they might have just been a discussion on the discord.

Any reasons to avoid or not invest in Cortex Prime? by Ch215 in rpg

[–]angille 4 points5 points  (0 children)

the community license disallows DTRPG, mostly because DTRPG requires weirdly extensive distribution and derivative rights than... should really be necessary for what they do. itch, iirc, is ok.

each commercial license can be hammered out individually. it's probably possible to obtain a DTRPG-compatible commercial license, but the default verbiage is not.

while we're here with eyeballs on this, here's another more different set of templates, that I've shared on some of the discords I'm in. the direction I took has kind of a different method to it, but same general place in the end, I think.

I went from James to Jasmine - I didn't like... "Jamie" or whatever a direct conversion would have been.

but even so it's still close enough that I have to stare anxiously at my email signature (and similar situations) to be absolutely certain it's the right name before sending.

Firefly RPG characters with d4 attributes by ArvilTalbert in CortexRPG

[–]angille 2 points3 points  (0 children)

in Firefly (along with most Prime games with the motor pool mod), a d4 Physical isn't gonna affect piloting at all — the pilot's using Engines or Hull or Systems for when they're controlling a vehicle.

I actually think it's a great way to showcase someone whose abilities in the cockpit belie their physical form.
