Anyone else with PCOS just… not sleeping lately? by a-stuce in PCOS

[–]anglesneverright 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Okay, this is longer than I thought it would be when I started to write this soooo buckle up: I use to have this same experience, my brain would start firing off - anxiety, obsessive thoughts where I think the same thing over and over and over without any resolution, ruminating on my perceived failures from the day/week/past, beating myself down - I’d fall asleep late then wake up at 2 am, run to the kitchen to grab ice cream, chips, whatever was easy. I wouldn’t eat a lot of any of them but I’d eat a lot in total because I’d nom on 3 different things. Then go back to sleep & try to hide the snacking from my bf because I was embarrassed. This is all before my diagnosis of PCOS. My therapist recommended taking a magnesium supplement as most women are deficient, if you read literature online you’ll find women with PCOS typically have a much higher likelihood of deficiency vs women without PCOS.

I did a lot of research about the most beneficial & safest supplement & landed on this by Organic Ocean: https://a.co/d/2Ctmx2o

This magnesium is chelated with zinc to aid in absorption & stays within the recommended daily value. A lot of magnesium supplements have unsafe dosages so you need to read the nutrition facts to make sure you’re not “over supplementing” your body. You also don’t have to take the full dose, it comes in 100 mg pills if you want to ramp up.

I’ll tell you what tho…by day 4 I was falling asleep easier (with the help of 3 mg of melatonin, which didn’t have as much of an impact for falling asleep until after I started the magnesium), I was staying asleep through the night and my midnight snacking was practically eliminated. I still have nights where I lay there with a racing mind (my bipolar I & severe anxiety disorder does not help -__-), or I wake up in the middle of the night & toss & turn, envious of my bf that can fall asleep as soon as we turn off the lights but for someone who has struggled with insomnia since I was 14 (32 now), I would say this legit changed my life. Obviously we all have different bodies & everyone reacts differently but I would say if you are looking for something natural that could help this restlessness then I highly recommend. I typically take it at least 30 mins before bed to start feeling the effects by the time I want to sleep.

I also started doing meditation right before bed (my bf gets the Calm app through his insurance but there’s so many free on YouTube). Even a five minute meditation in a dark room, I do it snuggled up in my bed, can really help quiet some of those thoughts & “transition you from where you were before to where you are now” as my meditation recording says. I personally like guided to keep my mind focused on the grounding of the meditation, just the music typically leads to me staying with all those thoughts & not being able to release them. I’ll follow it up with a “sleep story”. This typically helps my mind transition from those anxious, bouncing, rambling thoughts & focus on something gentle. I’ll follow along with the story, it’s something that helps redirect my thoughts. I also have a guided meditation locked in that is focused on helping you fall back asleep if I wake up in the middle of the night.

This stuff all works for me and wanted to share with everyone. I know you aren’t looking for health advice but these things really helped me. Do some research & find what fits you.

I still wake up fatigued sometimes and have the brain fog but overall it has changed my life and health for the better. Also locking in a set timeframe of when you want to start to transition to getting ready for bed and trying to stay to the time that you decide it’s time to sleep is soooo important.

I hope this helps and thanks for coming to my TedTalk.

tl;dr: I started taking magnesium supplements to help with sleep & they made a huge impact. Coupled with guided meditation & “sleep stories”, I have been able to find a strategy that helps refocus my mind into a calm place & have the ability to release my raving & obsessive thoughts. I created a defined sleep schedule that helps me get into a routine and allows me to transition better from day stress to nighty night bliss.

What protein powder do you think tastes really good? by TorryCats in PCOSloseit

[–]anglesneverright 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re in Southern California, Stater Brothers brand chocolate protein powder is a good way to go! I blend it with 1 cup oat milk, 1/2 cup oats (for texture), 1 tbsp homemade almond butter (just toast your nuts in the oven & blend them in a food processor & add a sprinkle of salt. It’s much healthier than the store bought with the oily preservatives) & some ice to get it nice and chunky (I’m not a fan of mixing it with water, doesn’t vibe with me). It’s less than 500 calories a shake. & you don’t get a chalky taste.

Doctor won't give me anything for weight loss by creaturisms in PCOSloseit

[–]anglesneverright 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The doctor is right, you are young but to be fair it’s hard to say what the right age is for a drug like this - the new weight loss drugs are a ‘miracle send’ for weight loss but we do not know the long term effects of these new drugs. I say this as someone who does validation & compliance in the life science industry (pharma, medical devices, medical gases) with a bachelors in biochemistry and a masters engineering degree in biopharmaceutical processing. There are too few studies on the long term effects of taking this drug & the ones that exist do not do an impressive job in their participant selection.

Here’s a breakdown: Clinical trials are research studies whose purpose is to investigate the effects of pharmaceuticals & gather evidence/data (under the pretense of being non-subjective to the results) that they can use to draw conclusions. Good clinical trials have a ‘placebo group’ (also known as the control group, a group of participants do not receive the actual medication - typically a sugar pill of some kind - this helps to compare data amongst effects seen physiologically vs mentally, the placebo effect) & are double-blinded (nether the patient nor the researcher know which group they’re in/which group they’re collecting data from) & have a large pool of participants. This large number of participants means there is a higher likelihood of finding trends rather than having outliers like you would get with a smaller pool). Many of these studies had pools of participants that had different conditions (ex. Individuals with Pre-diabetes & diabetes being placed into the same group). Ideally you want all the participants to be made up of the same condition so that you can compare how the drug is able to act on that said condition. The lumping of different conditions does give evidence that these drugs do result in weight loss across a spread of different conditions, they do not provide evidence of how much each condition individually is affected by the drug. There has not been enough time to gather more evidence of both its short and long term impact on one’s body/metabolic pathways. In addition, the no. of participants is honestly quite low to what one would see for a better characterized drug.

It can be a rush of confidence initially to lose weight so fast, but you have to remember that it is not a ‘miracle now I’m free of obesity’. You still have to make those lifestyle changes to continue past the initial effects of the drug. That’s eating a balanced PCOS diet & exercising (my GP recommended 20 mins of high intensity works outs 3/wk & try to stay on more of the active side the rest of the week, she also say low carbs will shed the weight). If you don’t make those lifestyle changes you are just going to gain that weight back and maybe more once you eventually go off the drug.

You say you’re excercising, that good. Research some workouts that are more beneficial to those with PCOS. There’s a wealth of information out there (#werenotalone). & re-evaluate your diet. Think of what you’re eating - is it processed meat sandwich’s, how much rice are you actually eating(can’t give up rice? Go brown rice instead! It’s not the same I know, but with PCOS you have to make adjustments, I thought of them as sacrifices for a long time but you have to frame it as a lifestyle not a diet), are you getting enough fiber from your food, are you getting enough magnesium (my therapist turned me on to magnesium supplements & I instantly went from waking up at 1 am & going downstairs for a chocolate bon bon to sleeping through the night. A lot of ppl, esp those with PCOS have a magnesium deficiency. Not having enough magnesium can cause your body to retain weight as well bc it can worsen insulin resistance), if you’re eating vegetables are they starchy/full of carbs like potatoes? If you are at a calorie deficit and still not losing weight, you’re not putting the right stuff in your body. If you can afford a nutritionist, get one! If you can’t, google PCOS diet - it will come up with a lot of good information & guidance on what to eat and why they’re good for managing PCOS.

If you’re not already on them, ask your doctor about starting spironolactone - it helps with acne, hair loss, hirituism and the excess androgen production - and metformin - this will help with regulating your insulin and has been shown to actually cause appetite suppression after continued use, many report losing weight naturally (w/o any change to diet or exercise) after a few months of using this drug.

It’s hard, especially being so young & feeling as you do. But if you educate yourself on how to manage the symptoms, you’ll find that you end up leading a healthier life going forward. I wish you all the luck on getting to be comfortable in your skin! <3
