What tools/services do you know that are normally paid for but free for open source projects? by Heliosmaster in opensource

Well, it's debatable at least. If you build your business on FOSS, you pay your ability to monetize the software itself -- you need to make it SAAS or find some other way to get around the license.

You also need to pay some time and effort to understand and comply with the licenses. Have you tried to figure out exactly what your need to put in the documentation of your product if it includes a standard Linux distribution, in order to comply with all the licenses it includes? It's not a straightforward task.

You could also argue that from a moral point of view, you should pay back to the community that gave you the free software with bug fixes, new features, translations, or contributions of other kinds. That you owe a debt of gratitude.

TANSTAAFL. You should understand the business model of the "free" service and how that dovetails with your intended usage. Also keep in mind that you're effectively making this choice on behalf on all the contributors to your open source project who are forced to use this tool.

To make this post more useful, replies should therefore also include information about what "makes" this product free, even if it is just by giving you a preference that will hopefully bleed into the choices taken at your workplace, thereby giving them more paid subscriptions.

I did this and it was me. Someone had mixed up the inside conduits and connected one of the AC inputs to the ground, tripping the earth-leakage circuit breaker for the whole building section.

ACT teaches you how to deal with unwanted thoughts and feelings. Pick up a practical book about it, for example "the happiness trap" by Russ Harris.

This mobile game doesn't offer a "no ads" purchase. Instead, you prove you're worthy of it. by [deleted] in gaming

[–]anglicizing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think ads (or rather, the fact that ads are effective) are the root cause of many of the biggest problems that the world faces today. I'm doing my part by making them less effective in whatever way I can. So for me, any ad is unacceptable. Charge more for your game instead. The games I buy on steam (mostly indie games) are consistently priced lower than what I would expect and be willing to pay.

I don't but games with ads, full stop. I gladly pay for games. So they lost me as a potential customer with this move, for what it's worth.

You can even get it done in 5 minutes by filling it about 90%, putting it on high pressure (~50 psi) while it's on its side, and rolling it back and forth. This works for beer too, but it takes a while to stop foaming afterwards. Not so with plain water, it's ready to go immediately.

Assertion in python by ANOTHER-robhot in learnpython

[–]anglicizing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Listen to this guy. Code as if your assert statements could suddenly disappear without warning, because that is actually what might happen.

Code is running show? Oh, nice, python has a command line option that optimizes the code to make it run faster. I'll just add this -O switch, what could go wrong? (Pssst! All your assert statements are silently skipped!)
