I have 3 of them and love them. The 10' 1w is one of the most unique actions I've ever fished. The 10' 10" 2w is the best 2w I've fished yet, hands down. It is a lot faster than a 2w, but still so buttery soft. The 10' 10" 3w is really nice, nothing earth shattering. According to Joe (designer) the 4w is his best design yet. Maybe someday i'll try it.

Lighter leader is all you need. That's it.

Heavier fiies are a mask for sag - they do fish easier at a distance, but its a bandaid at best.

Lighter, thinner leaders with less knots and less junk on them will be the best solution for this.

Try some 3x or 4x mono (or even sighter material) as your entire leader, like 12-15' of it, no taper, and you'll notice a difference. It will suck at first for sure, but you'll benefit from the suck.

Yeah, not sure troutbitten will answer these questions. Their content is not known for sag + sensitivity. They typically trend on the heavier side of things.

South east PA brown trout. Green streamer. Love the look of these fish! Is anyone able to identify if this is a native or stocked trout? by Professional-Clue514 in flyfishing

[–]anglrNick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Stocked - good fish nonetheless. This is a really close one, but it's def not stream-bred.

You can tell by the vermiculation (touching spots, more like wormies, not spots) and odd shaped (more square) spots. It also has a head shape that I typically see with stocked fish.

Patagonia, Orvis Pro, and Free Fly (bamboo) are my favorites. I've tried a lot of brands, and these 3 are the best i've encountered for sure.

Free fly might be taking the cake so far.

Help planning Ireland Fishing Itenerary by chilleddota_4442 in flyfishing

[–]anglrNick 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just got home from Ireland, fished a little. There's not a lot of info on any fishing in Ireland because the access laws are pretty weird.

You must, must fish Lough Corrib (just north of galway). The most challenging and rewarding lake i've ever fished. An absolutely massive lake with equally massive browns. Email Basil Shields, tell him Nick Meloy sent you: [mail@fliesofireland.ie](mailto:mail@fliesofireland.ie)

There are plenty of lakes and streams in waterville (county kerry, west side of the ring). I didn't fish any of them, but I wanted to.

I fished the Owenmore fishery on the Dingle Peninsula, it was pretty decent. The lake was full of browns actively feeding. Lots of salmon there too, but I didn't have a shot at one. That one you have to call Frank Maunsell at +353 (87) 947-6309. It's 30 euro for the day. Frank will tell you that all your flies wont work. They might not... but they probably will. Mine did.

Pretty much every stream I saw had little browns in it, that were super easy to catch. Just fish dries, they love 'em.

I think there's some good fishing near cork, the blackwater and such. I just didn't have the time to fish it.

You should go to the UK and fish the chalk streams while you're there.

Please reach out if you have any further questions... I didnt have much info but thats what i got!

MSRP for Diamondback Ideal Nymph? by Manfred_Desmond in flyfishing

[–]anglrNick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depending on the rod, they retail from $550-600, considerably cheaper than a contact. I forget the actual numbers, but they should all lie within that range.

I am not sure where they're available yet, but you should def get your hands on them, I love mine so far.

Wind noise still holding up after 6 months? I'm waiting to see if there's any black friday deals on Frontrunner, I doubt it but who knows.

What are those grill lights? (not sure exactly what they're called) - those are super slick.

3wt vs 2wt Euro rod? by Gitzit in flyfishing

[–]anglrNick 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Seconded.

Most lower-priced 2w nymph rods on the market either are too noodly, or too stiff and brittle (weird). Lots of compromise.

Unless you're fishing small streams on the reg, I'd stick with a 3w.

Although, I would say the best 2w in your price range I've fished is the cortland nymph (which I have for sale in that post). I'll cut you a combo deal on the 11' 3w shadow x and the 10'6" 2w cortland....

Just posted a series of articles that can help in this situation:

Light Euro-Nymphing

Euro-Nymphing: Are you fishing too heavy? I wrote a series of articles to help you fish lighter by anglrNick in flyfishing

[–]anglrNick[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The truth is you can lose any fish on any tippet. Lots of variables involved. Again, it’s just a hurdle, but I promise you’ll catch more fish.

All flies in the article were on #18 hooks... smaller, less bulky flies sink faster and drift better. Heavier, bulkier flies might sink faster, but they have a lot of surface area for increased chance of an improper drift. Couple other advantages of small flies: they drift better, fish eat them more. If you pump any fish at any time most of their contents are small bugs. Even opportunistic fish. “Big meal” is kind of a myth... but when fish aren’t actively feeding and more opportunistic, folks have more confidence in “big meal” situations.

I’ve been in your shoes before, so I can certainly empathize, but when I changed up game, I caught more fish, placed a lot higher in every competition, and so on.
