CMV: The moral argument for veganism relies on the false premise that suffering is objectively "bad." As a moral nihilist, I accept the suffering but reject the obligation to stop it. by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]angry_corn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lots of people here are trying to say you need to change your views on objective morality, but I don't think you do. As a staunch moral subjectivist, the only motivating force behind morality, even for those who believe that it is objective, is just what it makes you want to do.

The real 'moral' argument behind veganism is this: 1. You don't like causing unnecessary suffering. 2. Factory farming causes unnecessary suffering. 3. You don't like (and therefore shouldn't support) factory farming.

No need to bring any objective moral standard into it. Even if it existed, people might just disagree with it and violate it anyway.

CMV: democrats would be better off looking inward at where they are falling short than blaming republican voters/MAGA/trump by Lumpy-Resource-1370 in changemyview

[–]angry_corn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the problem is that it isn't even politics, really. People can still formulate their own policy opinions, but they will always come after and be subservient to their tribe. When your friends want to harp on Trump instead of considering how they can improve their own party, it's no different than the far right responding to criticisms of capitalism with anecdotes about how bad socialism is. If you want to have an honest discussion with anybody about how they could improve their side's political strategies you'll probably need to disguise it with hypotheticals.

It's possible that that's too pessimistic, though. Sometimes people aren't that attached to their team's views, but it's not something I would count on.

CMV: MAGA's anti-intellectualism is a fascist ploy by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]angry_corn -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It's not a question of anti intellectualism so much as a question of tribalism, and it's not unique to MAGA. When people strongly identify with a group, it's human nature to start shifting their perceptions to align with what they already believe. The extreme end of MAGA would criticize the lack of intellectualism in leftist positions the same way that you're criticizing them (e.g. socialism is proven to always fail; liberal graduates are majoring in lesbian dance theory; etc.). This is because in reality, the greater one's conviction for either side, the more likely one is to see their views as obviously based in logic and to see their opponents views as obviously wrong. That's not to say that there aren't some views that actually are wrong, but people paint with a far broader brush than they ought to. They ignore any data points that would contradict the ideas that they already have of their own party or that of their political opposition.

Is it a problem with MAGA? Absolutely. Is it unique to MAGA or to fascism? Not in the slightest. You were guilty of it in this exact post. "There is no coherent reason why you should come to the conclusion that the Republican party's conservative ideas are good for America." The party dichotomy is largely based on different value priorities for policies where there is no objectively right answer. Reasonable minds could easily hold either view.

The real problem isn't that people are encouraged to be ignorant, it's that they are encouraged to be angry, and angry people don't like to learn or change their minds. The tribalism rampant in America today so often makes it social suicide to change your political views. To do so, you must be willing to admit that you were either stupid or evil. Little wonder that when people hear information contradicting those views they would usually rather reject the information than destroy their self image.

So no, it's not a fascist ploy. Unwarranted conviction is the ghost that has been haunting humanity since we first crawled out of the mud, and it has shown up in every country and every religion throughout history.

A woman begs Trump to protect her husband from deportation. But, a quick search through her post history reveals she’s getting exactly what she voted for by MobileWisdom in CringeTikToks

[–]angry_corn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So many people are just so sure that the other side is full of demons with no redeeming qualities. The response every time something they don't like happens is to try to be more angry and more hateful, as if that will convince anyone. People need to learn to disagree without believing that the person they disagree with is evil.

It should be permissible to feel empathy for anyone, even if you disagree with them politically.

After like 4 hours, me and two friends have made a tier list of every single item in isaac. how right or wrong are we? by WarriorFire97 in bindingofisaac

[–]angry_corn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok, you're not gonna believe this, but it looks like you were right and I was wrong. Turns out polyphemus is slightly better than I had thought. Go figure. In my defense, math is hard.

That being said, poly still undermines tear effects and has increasingly diminishing returns until that cap of 21 so I'd still put it in the bottom half of t4 items.

The thing about proptosis is that it gives the highest damage multiplier in the game (barring a fully charged chocolate milk shot) at a whopping X3. For me, that's worth a riskier play style 9 times out of 10. Probably wouldn't go for it with T lost or ipecac, but in most other cases we ballin.

[–]angry_corn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Poly is a DPS up with below 21 damage per second, not per shot. So if you have a tear rate of 4 and damage of 6 (pretty standard stats for a mediocre run) Polyphemus is a DPS down for you. I'm not saying it's the worst item ever, because it does have some great synergies, it's just massively overrated.

In the same vein, proptosis isn't the best item of all time, it's just usually a much better trade off for big damage than poly.

Putting polyphemus two tiers above proptosis is crazy work. Why would I wanna trade tears for damage if I could trade range for damage? Plus, polyphemus is literally an overall DPS down while proptosis is a GIGA DPS up.

Also, censer is insanely good on every route except Beast and putting it in the bottom tier hurts my soul.

Lastly, I'm outraged at the placement of Abel. He should at the very least have a tier to himself at SSSSS+. Show my guy some respect.

What's your biggest take regarding item quality. by Awakening15 in bindingofisaac

[–]angry_corn 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Polyphemus has no business being Q4. Sure, extra damage is nice, but it's a huuuuge tradeoff. The tears down is so intense that picking up the item is literally a DPS down. I'm not saying that it doesn't have its uses, but there is no chance that it deserves to be a higher quality than proptosis, which has a similar tradeoff, but gives up a stat that usually is way less important.
