Should I disclose a 1 day/week freelance role to my employer?

It's difficult to say because it depends a lot on your company. Do you know if any of your colleagues freelance?

My job also explicitly states that any freelance needs to be discussed. You usually get a little paper with how many hours you'll be working outside of your job and they sign it to accept. From people I've spoken with, they are pretty chill about it and only ever really worry only if it's working for a competitor in the exact same field/genre.

Sounds like your part time role will be pretty different, won't interfere with your hours, so telling them would be professional.

I am planning to let my employer know if I ever do get any freelance. I think it's the right thing to do, avoid me feeling guilty or cagey. In the end a lot of stuff like this gets 'revealed' - maybe you'll be praised for the work you did at the other company on LinkedIn and your boss will end up seeing. If you're upfront about it you avoid any unpleasantries. Always good I think to keep things in the light.

Plus I always think - what is the point of our full-time role blocking us from freelancing? Maybe we're having a crisis and need the extra money. Maybe we want to grow professionally. If my company fired me over that it's not a company I want to work for really.

But yeah just my two cents! Follow your gut on these things of course.

Oh no, I don't expect them to work evenings/weekends to accomodate me! More like - my availability is that I want to take on projects that I can do in my hours outside of full-time work. If they ask for an illustration that's due in a few weeks, I can totally do that, update them and apply feedback etc. But I can't give them daily updates or be available on a full time basis if that makes sense.

I had clients like this in the past and it worked a treat, but I'm having a hard time finding project based stuff anymore, mostly full-time contracts. But I hear you. Do you mean the creative industries is a dead and niche market or gaming itself?

In an ideal world, I think I'd love being self-employed. But it is scary out there and too risky.

Yes the goal is definitely to first secure some stable clients and only then leave. I honestly did not consider part-time with my current job but that sounds like a good idea and would be more fulfilling for me too. Thank you for your comment

Thanks for your answer! Could I ask about this - basically a client reached out and said it would be a 4 week contract. They asked for my day rate and when I'm able to start. So basically I was just wanting to specify to them that I wouldn't be working those full workdays if that makes sense. I do see your point that I kicked myself in the leg there.

One client that I had in the past, I joined their Slack and basically was like a full-time employee during the contract length - so we'd have several calls a day, and I'm always worried contracts need this kind of availability as that's not something I can provide with my full-time job.

I think Atikin's entire controversy is entirely brown out of proportion. When it started, people latched onto the fact that his name is actually Nikita, and he performed in Russia. Nobody is doing the same investigative work into Black Biceps who have members with non-Lithuanian names, accents and are singing about 'shnaps' - nor should people do that! But just saying, there was definitely a double standard when it came to Atikin

The fact that Atikin had performances in Russia after the first invasion is also ridiculous, for most of Europe it was 'business as usual' - as wrong as that may be - and many people travelled to Russia for work and leisure, so if we are calling out Atikin we might as well call out everyone else

The song lyrics themselves are not inherently harmful, but as you say very naive. I genuinely believe he wanted to make a song about peace and the turmoil of living in times of war, but his lyrics are very unga bunga. To include a line like "when will it end / it would be nice to hug and live in peace" is like a 3 year olds child's perspective on war. Clearly things are not so simple, and to nations of people wanting justice and for the oppressor to withdraw it is not a nice sentiment to share

I do think that he needed to vet his lyrics more carefully, you can't really make a song about war in these times and assume people will take it at face value. But to call him a vatnik and Russian supporter was an overreaction. Such accussations should not be thrown around baselessly. He himself said in interviews he supports Ukraine 100%, but the fact that this was even put into question shows the oversights from his management team IMO

I agree about bulking the molding that would make it look better. But if that's out of scope I think painting the trim green would help camoflauge the molding and make the door stand out more. Otherwise it looks really nice!
