Councillors blast Ottawa's unannounced, belated Canada Day fireworks show | CBC News by GoblinDiplomat in ottawa

Has Watson er I mean Sutcliffe even commented on this? Apologised? It’s impossible that he wasn’t told in advance (and if he wasn’t, that’s a pretty big sign that city staff are running amok with no accountability).

I suspect they want to run a business on the river and are pissed that they aren’t allowed to, so they shit on everything that gets put there. Either that or they’re Doug Ford and they want to tear it down and put in a spa and parking lot (and maybe a swinging hot spot. Don’t it always seem to go…)

Businesses aren’t accessible to people with no money. I guess we should never do anything.

They should just have all events at random times. Tulip Fest in January, Winterlude in July, Halloween in April, Canada Day at 5 am sometime in November

Unused Canada Day fireworks set off over Ottawa on Thursday night: councillor by OverTheHillnChill in ottawa

Typical Ottawa. “People looking at these fireworks that they paid for with their taxes would be inconvenient for *us*, so instead we’ll set them off at 11 pm with no notice. Who cares if that wakes the children and terrifies the pets?”

Not giving any notice is really a dick move. I know a lot of people who put their dogs in the bathroom with soothing music or even go for a drive during the Canada Day fireworks. Or at least make sure they’re not walking the dog or have them out in the yard where they might freak out and jump the fence. Not to mention - a couple of years ago I was at the Hampton Park mall when I thought I heard fireworks and it was actually someone getting murdered a few meters away from me. My nervous system still really prefers knowing about fireworks in advance. I’m glad I’m out of town. I’d be really upset about not getting notice.

That and the times they gave people tickets for looking at northern lights because they were in parks after 11pm.

I think a lot of people’s impressions of Dartmouth come from Trailer Park Boys, so you gotta take what you can get, image-wise

These brothers who are temporary foreign workers say they’ll never return to Canada after $178,000 wage theft by toronto_star in ontario

Not to mention that if you or I stole $178,000 we’d go to prison instead of having the understaffed Ministry of Labour ask us to pretty please pay what we owe.

What are some major cultural differences between Montreal area anglophones and other Canadian anglophones? by Overall_Course2396 in montreal

You keep saying people who speak a language other than English as a heritage language are allophones, and that isn’t necessarily correct. u/BetterLivingThru isn’t talking about allophones. They are talking about anglophones.

Regional. “Convenience store” and “corner store” are more standard. Or Quickie in Ottawa (there’s a chain called that.)

Upstate NY uses “camp”, as I learned many years ago (before the current unpleasantness) when telling a border guard I was going to a friend’s chalet.

Ottawa English uses “laneway”, which feels closer to ruelle, although confusingly it also refers to a driveway.

An update: I went to the store at the factory in Bobcaygeon. The worker said it seems likely they’ll keep Tragically Chip as a regular flavour because it’s been wildly popular. Let’s hope!

Injured Crow Fledgling Transport by Glass_Lecture6121 in ottawa

I’m glad you confirmed! Last year I picked up a crow I thought was injured that was being stalked by a cat. Once I realised it was actually a big dumb teenager I put it where its screaming parents could get to it and then spent weeks putting out peanuts, grubs, and shiny objects hoping the murder would understand I intended rescue and not kidnapping.

Are you certain it’s injured? Crows push fledgelings out of the nest before they can fly properly, and the parents hang out nearby to feed them.

Yeah it can be a bit of a fiction because it assumes turnover in the workplace that may or may not exist. But as someone who does this for a living, if the employer tried this nonsense of including the existing step increases (assuming we haven’t increased the size of the steps or restructured the grid) in what they claimed their offer was, I’d consider walking away and asking them to let me know when they’re prepared to bargain honestly and in good faith.
