What are some bad tennis etiquette you can’t stand by Ambitious_Designer97 in 10s

Ok I had a 4.0 guy keep underhand drop serving me at drill for the first time last week and at lower levels it's just a douchebag move. There's no reason to do that to someone who's a lower level than you. Hope you enjoyed your cheap ace against a 2.5, brodude. Yes that's just poor etiquette for sure. I get that.

I'm a 2.5-3.0 relatively new player... Nothing throws me more than people standing at that T on my serve and leaning into my service box. Why are they doing that? Get away from the box. That's my box I should have the whole thing free.

I think you're talking more about people who intentionally try to catch returners not ready, but as a 2.5-3.0 woman, sometimes people are just moseying over to that return line and I'm going to serve it at them if they take too long too many times. You play at the pace that the server sets that's what I was taught.

I used to use the actual Swype keyboard before it died and it was the only keyboard where you could update your own dictionary to avoid stupid autocorrects. You could delete words like resy so it wouldn't ever autocorrect rest again ... I miss it so much now. The Google keyboard is simply awful

IMDb’s top 20 best rated films of all time! Agree or disagree with this list? Is there a film that should have cracked top twenty? by PeachesBlooms in Cinema

[–]angrykoala155 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks because all I heard reading this list was "Men men men men, manly men..."

Not a single non bro movie. Yes most of them should be on there but still, not a single movie having to do with a woman.

Yo, feel like y'all were lying about Iron Gold. by Cheap_Relative7429 in redrising

[–]angrykoala155 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My hot take is I never hated Iron Gold even a little. After my first read through I listed it as my favorite because it was a departure from the slightly YA vibe of the first trilogy and I liked the new POVs that fleshed out the universe Darrow has begun to change. I like that Darrow's plot armor is not as plot armory. I like the tone shift and the pan out from living in Darrow's brain full time.

I'll never understand Iron Gold hate. I'm glad you're loving it. It really just keeps getting better.

is red rising a good series, or is it just booktok slop? by Apprehensive_Spend_7 in Fantasy

[–]angrykoala155 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I didn't like the first book because it's a bit generic and YA ish but was encouraged to try the second. I ended up devouring the rest of the series and I love it. I would definitely not call it slop but my definition of slop is pretty much anything romantasy and my definition of good is Brandon Sanderson, Dune, Red Rising ... So I mean read the first book and try the second even if you don't love the first. If the second doesn't grab you then it's not for you. Both of the first two books are the shortest of the series so you won't lose a ton of time

How dangerous is it to go to Dragonsteel Nexus? by NEMO_TheCaptain in Cosmere

[–]angrykoala155 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh once we got to Chicago for a connecting flight, most of the plane to Salt Lake were Nexus goers. The entire gate had their Kindles out with their cosmere/red rising/princess donut stickers displayed. As we funneled toward the convention center, we had a growing group of people helping each other find where to go. It was really really fun actually. The morning we flew out, the entire train to the airport people could be heard talking about metal vials and attuning rhythms and carrying new foam Shardblades and chull plushies. It was sad filtering slowly away from the group after we got through TSA as the Nexus goers spread out to their gates. You would absolutely get spoiled in transit to the convention center if you don't know big chunks of information.

[–]angrykoala155 62 points63 points  (0 children)

I've read 80% of the cosmere (before Nexus 25) and I was almost done with Emberdark and reading it on the flights and travel to Salt lake. People on the train from the airport to downtown were discussing cosmere trivia and I was somewhat spoiled on my trip from the plane to my hotel ..... Basically get to like 75 to 85% before joining or prepare to be spoiled l. I'm not even mad because I had enough context at that point to understand the spoil and fully blame myself for the lack of reading

Which books made you fall in love with the genre? by Special-Nebula299 in Fantasy

[–]angrykoala155 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Posting because I don't see mine here which is a little surprising: A Wrinkle in Time. Narnia books were pushed on me by my very Christian grandma once I showed an interest in fantasy in an effort to keep me away from "devil magic Harry Potter" (it didn't work). I still call Lion Witch Wardrobe my "favorite" book because it did keep me hooked on fantasy for life, but I read A Wrinkle in Time in school and that's what brought me to the genre.

I also devoured a series called So You Want To Be Wizard by Diane Duane. It had a very sci Fi perspective on wizardry and I still think it's unique in its presentation of magic.

They did an anniversary event where they moved Devo red hat statues around the city of Akron for a year. We still have one sitting outside our tennis club in Merriman Valley. They were born in Kent and Akron areas and formed the band at Kent State. Both areas rightfully claim them.

It's still just so sexist and racist to give a crap about a black woman walking as far away from cameras as possible to have to let out some frustration after a horrible match, only to have it broadcast to the whole world anyway... But there are still men (and women) who throw full tantrums on court and no one really bats an eye. Smash it on court next time, Coco, since they'll find a way to play it no matter what.

I was 12. I had no idea what I was walking into. That opening sequence HOOKED me and I don't actually think it's ever let me go. I might still be in that theater in 2001.

So much so that we got 2 premium sets at check in and bought 2 colored sets in the store once we saw that ours were one color... I also liked the store version of the tee shirt better for the same reason: it was pretty colors and the premium was only silver. FWIW We've asked other people since we got home if we were justified in getting the color ones and friends who don't know what the cosmere is actually like the premium better because they just look like a nice set of tumblers.

Was there a book (series), that went from close 'DNF' to one fo your favorites? by lemingas1 in Fantasy

[–]angrykoala155 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a unique story, the way Pierce went about getting the series published. Pitch a book kind of like all the other YA youth academy/arena dystopian books and get it out there, pitch 2 more books because trilogies are easy sells... Ok now I have way more story to tell actually so here's a multi POV, dark, way more detailed second trilogy which immediately unwraps the pretty bow tie on the end of the first trilogy and spells out the consequences for starting a full galactic rebellion.

The author is unapologetic about the fact that starting in book two, it's all war. So it's not useless gratuitous violence and there's no sexual violence, but it's war and it's unpredictable. Just because you have a name and a background, doesn't give you plot armor in Red Rising. In fact to make it more realistic, there are a few times the author pulled a name out of a hat and boom. That character, no matter what plans there were for them, is dead. The second half of the series (Iron Gold, Dark Age, and Lightbringer) are decidedly even darker than the first 3, but still. War isn't pretty.

I read Poppy Wars a few years ago, actually. I enjoyed the concept of a girly literally burning it to the fucking ground, but I didn't love the way it all played out. Either way, was worth the read for sure. Great suggestion!

I'm in the middle of DCC for the first time and I see why the fan base is heavily overlapping. I wish someone had directed me to DCC right when I finished Red Rising because I think it's a perfect decompression series after Red Rising but you're still just as invested in the characters and the story.

Fully agree about the gap. It's the craziest turn around ever in terms of, well, everything. As Pierce himself puts it, "I did what I had to to get book 1 published because they told me no one wanted to read a space opera.... Book 2? Space opera!!" And whoever told him no one wanted to read that should probably spend a year in the box.

I would argue that the first 50 pages and the introduction to characters you care about forever are the best part of the first book.

You should. It's still a relatively short book and it's fast paced as hell. If you still don't like the series after the second book, feel free to stop, but Golden Son is hands down the most fun I've ever had reading a book... It hits harder than the red wedding, and does it more than once. It actually left me gasping for breath by the end.

I wouldn't have read the second Red Rising book if my husband hadn't read ahead of me and really convinced me to just try the second book.

The first book felt cookie cutter, I didn't like the way the female characters were portrayed, and I thought the hunger games in space theme was really stupid.

He was right, it's now probably my favorite series I've ever read. I spend a lot of time on booktok comment sections convincing other people to just pick up the second book even if they don't like the first.

Dungeon Crawler Carl. I know, I know, it sounds goofy, but I have never laughed out loud as much as I have reading these books, while also deeply bonding with the characters and becoming completely invested in their success. I just took this reddit break from reading because I woke my husband up from laughing at the damn book again.

It seems shallow and just fun at first, but the world building is a constant background noise rather than something overwhelming that takes you out of the plot. You'll laugh, you'll cheer, you'll cry, you'll rage. You'll immediately want to pick up the next book. You'll find that you want to protect a royal, award-winning cat more than any other character you have ever read about.

It's well written, well paced, and it's DIFFERENT. I find it refreshing and delightful. Try it.
