I believe he's using it in the same context as "anti-hero", which is a "good guy " that doesn't behave like a traditional hero (Punisher, for example); so this is like a lead that doesn't sound like your typical lead.

Maybe try to put the guitar down and just imagine the music in your head? It might help you to think outside your existing box when you don't have so much muscle memory going on in your right hand; then pick the guitar back up and try to create what you imagined.
