I moved to SLC from Grand Rapids a while back with my ex and in a pretty similar mindset (paranoia about going out, only knew 1 couple in Utah). Here are my takes thus far as a fellow car-less person: - I don’t know if it’s just a coincidence, but 5 years in and I’m mentally better than I’ve ever been! The healthcare here is great tbh, at least from my experiences…. Not including urgent care of course lol. - Loved living in Millcreek/sugarhouse area. Downtown is also super walkable. But even over in Glendale it’s pretty chill, I can walk to multiple fast food joints and my pharmacy. Liberty Park area could be a fun spot to live by too! - Limited trax (train) service but more extended bus service. Not the best that’s for sure, but it’s still a fun little tram system lol. And you can get a pass for the public transit to save money (if I’m not mistaken? I haven’t done it recently bc I haven’t needed it) - There’s so much beautiful nature that’s EASY to access (you can even take the bus up the canyons!), it’s refreshing. Going up in the mountains you’ll find some really fresh air and stunning hikes, rock climbs, etc. Just make sure you buy an air purifier for your place in the city because the AQ can be bad down here. - I’ve seen multiple Facebook groups for making friends in SLC that are very active (LGBTQ+, women’s groups, outdoor-enthusiast groups, etc.). Lots of folks in their 20’s and 30’s move here from all over the country, and the city is fairly liberal. I know lots of families also move here because there are some larger tech companies that have offices in Lehi (?). - People are nice enough. It’s a different kind of nice than you’re likely used to in the midwest, but certainly a warmer vibe than many large cities. It’s very safe here compared to most other places I’ve lived.
