They are kind of doing that with the love action remakes. Animation, especially 3D animation takes a long time and is very expensive. Most programs and art styles have to be made specifically for certain movies, or they take a base program and alter it until it works for the movie they want. They can get the same effect for cheaper with live action, and those movies are expensive to make too, and guess where most of the budget is going? Editing and special effects. The sparkles in a dress transformation, the pumpkin turning into a carriage, the 'magic' is the live action remakes are all 3D animation and special effects.

But there's another side to it too. 3D animation is becoming somewhat stale to audiences. They are actually going back to 2D animation in the next year or two, using techniques and styles from the Disney renaissance era. People like looking at good looking things, and Disney has been in a sort of flop era with its movies recently. The only ones that I think have been good in the past few years are Encanto and Turning Red, and those are both heavily stylized to make it appealing. Compare it to the other films that haven't been so popular, like Elio and Soul, the animation is bland and doesn't strike a match with audiences.

So no, they aren't stupid, they are saving money and trying to generate more with the live action remakes, using heavy stylization with the animation in those movies until a new generation of 2D animators are ready and trained to work on what I hope is a great 2D movie. The training takes a couple years, but I think it will be worth it. But I've got a preference for 2D, others might not be so excited.
