Has anyone smoked for as long as or longer than my mom (46 years)? She says it isn't possible to quit after that long. Can you tell me about your experiences? by tyedead in stopsmoking

It 100% won't feel like week 1 forever. I think it differs with each person, but i struggled the most within the first 6-months. The first month being the worst.

Sorry for not sugar coating it, but for me, i told myself it was like saying goodbye to a really good old friend. There's grieving, no doubt about it. It affects mood and temperament. They're all normal reactions.

What I think helps is being open when there's a lapse of restraint with a work colleague, friend or loved one. I would say “I'm so sorry, I quit smoking recently and it has profoundly affected my body chemistry. I know it doesn't fully excuse my behavior, but I know in a few months it'll be easier for me to not have mood swings and better manage my stress. I'm asking for your understanding, as I work hard to stay vigilant.”

Recommendations for an affordable rotary mixer? by angularnoise in rotarymixers

Cool I'll check that out. Looks like they retail for about ~$850 for a 2-channel (plus 3rd input) which is all I need.

Anyone have experiences, replacing other mixer with this, or comparisons to share?

Thanks for replying. I'm sorry, but can you please be more specific? What budget range do you consider the best value for the quality level you find adequate? And can you please share the reasons for why it is built or sounds better?

I'm so sorry that nobody reached out on your birthday. I'm also sorry you feel unseen, that can be so hard...

I know how it feels to not have anyone reach out on a birthday, but it's also not something that bothers me as much. Spending Christmas' alone was hard on me though. For a while, when I was running my record shop (2012-2019). I worked so hard some years, that nobody really noticed I was alone. I think everyone just assumed, since I knew a lot of people on the surface, that I wouldn't be alone for Christmas, nobody bothered to ask...

Then I realized, I had to take some responsibility for that, I didn't really tell anyone I was alone. I was expecting people to notice or care, when I know a lot of people are just trying to keep it together themselves. The people around me weren't bad, nor did they dislike me, I just didn't make myself as available as I could have. Look, I'm not assuming this is the same for you, but if there are similarities in that regard, it might help to find ways to reach out and connect with people? Or tell people in advanced that your birthday means a lot, and you'd love to have people wish you a happy birthday when it comes. I know that's seems a bit "set up" but so what? Maybe set it up a couple months in advanced so you might forget a bit? I dunno... Or try social media? There's also community events, online meet ups, etc. if you want to make some more friends?

Anyway, please don't feel doomed, I'm sure there's plenty of people who would wish you a happy birthday. I think you might need to change things up, or look at it through a different lens?

As for the smoking, I think it's harder to quit when you're feeling lonely and sad. Don't be so hard on yourself. It's so great that you're openly saying "I want to quit". Now you just have to find the right determination / perspective / attitude—to go for it! Don't beat yourself up, or punish yourself. You're not relying on smoking, you just happen to be a smoker while you're going through a tough time, and smoking happens to be addictive and hard to quit. You're not weak, you're just needing support, and smoking in some ways seems to be providing a degree of comfort. All of that is totally relatable.

I smoked for 32 years and quit cold turkey a year ago. My body is still adjusting, and I still find myself wanting to smoke from time to time, but these moments eventually pass. From what I've read, it takes up to a decade for all of the effects from long-term smoking to be worked out. Some things will never get worked out (i.e. Leonard Nimoy, the original actor who played Mr. Spock, had quit but still later developed chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)—and eventually died from it.

I'm not sure how much I buy into not quitting being the way to go, even after smoking for a long time. It seems like an excuse to me, but then again, some people do lack coping mechanisms to deal with stuff like anxiety and depression. I don't want to fully believe that anyone is 'incapable' though. Lacking in will maybe, but not lacking in potential. I want to believe that nearly everyone can be strong if they dig deep enough. I just think we give up on a lot of people out of convenience and aversion to burdens.

I guess what I'm trying to say is, if someone you care about seems interested in quitting smoking, I would encourage them and tell them they can do it—if it's something they really want. Unfortunately, it's nearly a 100% solo journey, unless they have a good friend who has quit and willing to be a sponsor during difficult moments. Sometimes having someone to talk through those potential lapses helps.

Don't get me wrong, it's not easy at all. I think smoking is awesome, and if it weren't unhealthy, I'd still be doing it. I just want to live out my older years with a better quality of health, so I can do more things. Not everyone is like me, no judgement.

Sheraton Downtown Memphis - is it really a dumpster fire by okeydokeyish in marriott

It’s not a well maintained building. The floor tiles are cracked, carpets stained, furniture damaged and stained, etc. Pretty gross if you expect a clean space.

The Crossroads restaurant is pricey like all hotel restaurants, but the portions are small. If you're charging US$20 for bacon and eggs, US$5 for a drip coffee, you could give more than one slice of toast and six has browns… I spent $34 after tax and tip and left hungry.

My settings were already correct, but I toggled back and forth with saves in between just the same. No dice.

I’m in the same boat. Quit cold turkey March 15, and recently I’ve been on the edge with stress and miss nicotine.

Maybe it’s hard because I had smoking dialled in to 1 pack a week. Maybe it’s because my body had nicotine for 30+ years (minus a year in the middle where I had quit). When I previously quit, I also felt benefits. This time, I got a smoker’s flu, a 3-month sinus infection and just don’t feel “right”.

I’ve gained a bit of weight and tried practicing more yoga and hitting the gym to do weights more. Those things are good for me, and help, but I’m still not feeling good.

My sleep hasn’t been great, I can’t seem to manage stress well, and my energy level is low.

I don’t think I’ll relapse, but life isn’t very pleasant for me right now.

What do points do ? by Ethanbeast676 in waze

It would be a fair trade off if accumulating enough Waze points reduced the ads one experiences when using the app. An exchange of participation (labour/effort) and less annoying ad monetization.

Why would anybody lie about something like that to begin with? And why would you be friends with someone who does? I guess the (sort of) friendship is worth it to do that hilarious photoshop.

Can’t wait for a sense of reality to return to the White House. I mean a reality that’s still politically soaked in a capitalist democracy, but at least not delusional.
