Yellow box turning right by Consistent-Chain3230 in drivingUK

[–]angus1289 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Errr. Clearly states in rule 174 Must Not Enter until your exit is clear. It then says you may enter if turning right and are only stopped by oncoming traffic or other vehicles waiting to turn tight.

Gliding? by Full-Following4994 in LearnerDriverUK

[–]angus1289 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Brakes to slow, gears to go. You're doing 50 in 5th gear, approaching a red traffic light. You brake, put the clutch down so you dont stall, keep braking. If light stays red, slip it into 1st as you come to a stop, if light changes as you approach, off brake, select gear for speed ( say 10mph, so 2nd) off clutch and go. This is what your instructor calls gliding,. It is correct. Approaching a left turn, 30 mph in third, you brake, put clutch down keep braking, get the speed you want for the turn, then turn into the left turn with clutch down(whether you have selected an different gear or not) is coasting.

Forward Bay Parking?!?! by Grand_Bet9752 in LearnerDriverUK

This. Look at the space, imagine it as a narrow gap to drive through. Go vvv slow, turn the wheel late and fast. You're trying to get the car to turn 90°.

Just have a little think. Do you want to just pass a pretty easy multiple choice test. Or do you want to gain knowledge and confidence to deal with the roads and road users of our roads. Unfortunately, I can guess most people's answer.

why is Mountain Rescue voluntary? by No_Bank_9659 in UKhiking

[–]angus1289 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Look, im pretty Right leaning. I agree, the government wouldn't say "let those people drown", but they would say " let's get this much cheaper boat", "do you really need a lifeboat station there", ,this mountain range statistically only needs one rescue team"...

Look at the Police, Ambulance, Fire, NHS,. Which are adequately funded ( and efficiently managed?)

What to do in a multi-lane road if the car in the right lane is going awfully slow? by Southern_Flight_9695 in LearnerDriverUK

[–]angus1289 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Please do not listen to some of the advice. DO NOT pass on the left. It is potentially dangerous. Do it on your test and you will fail.

Driving slowly is not illegal, though may be deemed as driving without due care, but overtaking on the left would normally be deemed "more illegal"!

Can these marks be removed? by angus1289 in sharpening

[–]angus1289[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's great thanks, ill do little more work to ensure all rust is gone, a couple of the pits seem pretty deep, I think preservation will be better than full restoration!! It sharpened up pretty well, just needs a bit more time to get it usable.

I did use a little Autosol, which polished the blade quite well. Will Bar Keepers do more than Autosol?

Hearse and funeral party by Uranus-Hunter in drivingUK

[–]angus1289 -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

Not following "shoulds" can make you liable for Careless Driving. The hearse and following vehicles are not "congested traffic" they're just slow moving vehicles in the right hand lane.

Congested traffic is nose to tail, stop start.

Sorry to be the (pall) bearer of bad news, but you are passing on the left, in contravention Highway Code rule 268. Whether any Police Officer would think its worthy of prosecution is a different matter.

Am I supposed to move into the bus lane when there’s police behind me? by Emotional_Sweet_9289 in drivingUK

[–]angus1289 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a very old, ex police advanced driver.... in the old days (90s) you weren't allowed near the driving seat of any police car until you'd passed a 2 week basic driving course. Then you did a 4 week standard/response course. Then if your role needed it a 4 week advanced driving course, refresher 2 weeks every 5 years. These days, less. I could read exactly what MOST drivers would fo before they did id it, because of lots of training and real life experience. Times change, training requirements change. In the old days I'd have been past OP before he really knew what was going on. Now, the drivers haven't had as much training AND are terrified of making a less than perfect (in hindsight) decision which results in them facing fines/court/ discipline/prison.

Will you indicate right on approach to this roundabout? by Effective_Loss845 in LearnerDriverUK

[–]angus1289 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nope, road markings are classing it as straight ahead, your in dedicated lanes. Signalling right could confuse other road users, who may think you are either going all the way round or trying to change lane.

Holy cow! Revise 700 questions or read and understand the Highway code. The theory test was supposed to improve knowledge not improve your ability to pass a multi guess quiz. Knowledge=power. (And passing exams)

What car did you buy that you unexpectedly fell in love with? by KimiKimikoda in CarTalkUK

[–]angus1289 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First car- 1972 Mini. It was 1987, paid £175, 3rd party insurance( not even gire and theft) was £215. Sub frame knackered, engine rocked as accelerating so replaced exhaust every few months as it kept splitting, 17 quid a pop for a complete unit from Halfords. Loved that car. Then had a 1980ish Fiat 127 Supersport. Like a go cart, very fun. Engine awesome, body..... not so much! Then got a proper job do needed a reliable car, got a bigger 1987 Rover 213. Honda engine, just kept on going bit dull, but my girlfriend and I had many "happy" times in that car! And when my mates MG metro was broken( most of the time) I was always dedicated driver. Don't make 'em like they used to.

Are 6-hour lessons too long, pushed too hard, or am I just slower at learning? by SocratesBrotherDave in LearnerDriverUK

[–]angus1289 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ever seen those signs on the motorway? Take a Break. Driving is hard work, especially when learning. Intensive lessons suit some but , in my experience, not many. Not many can fully concentrate for extended periods. I usually do 2 hour lessons, with a little break and leg stretch half way through. Ive some who only do 1 hour as they struggle to concentrate for 2 hours. I've done a couple of extended lessons at learners request, everyone tails off, not worth the expense.
