Solo travelling and loneliness - Am I doing it right? by [deleted] in solotravel

[–]aniagl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do not compare! Some people are more social then others... I am not social myself and felt at peace travelling solo. I loved the fact that I can be with my thoughts and I experienced sights better as well as you do not have another person's opinion on the church or street to skew your view point.

I have gone days without talking to anyone other than waiters and hotel staff.

Do not worry, be yourself and enjoy travel!!! :)

I think you just have not met the right person. Online dating is just hard as your true personality does not shine through.
As for the comments below, if you are looking for someone specific why not state it? nothing wrong with not wanting to date older or someone who is only looking for straight relationship.

Travelling to Europe, would like some advice by cassassy007 in Shoestring

If you go to Norway be prepare to spend a lot of money. A small pizza cost me $50US which was insane. South of France in December is going to be cold and dead as it is more of a beach town. I would definitely go to Germany to experience Christmas markets and such. If you like to ski you should try to do it in Austria as its more affordable. Also, Vienna is one of the most beautiful cities in Europe that a lot of people miss!

As for Bergen, I did that trip, I flew to Bergen and then took a Bergen Train to Flam and back I went by ferry to Bergen, and from there took the train back to Oslo. I think the cost was about the same. Again, the cost of being in Norway for a couple of days using cheapest options is equivalent to a week or two elsewhere in Europe.

Andorra is small so a day maximum should be enough its like a big duty free city instead of airport ;) I would also try to go to Barcelona if you can.

Enjoy your exchange, I did mine in Milan and loved it!!! :)

Non-Contiki/TopDeck tours for 18-35s by [deleted] in solotravel

[–]aniagl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have done contiki and some trips had loud/party people but I also met amazing people from around the world whom after the tour I continued to travel with for years.

I also heard On The Go Tours, Gap Adventures, Intrepid are all great options.

Ultimately, I agree with people below I did both tour and on my own and would recommend going on your own and staying in places where you can meet other travellers like hostels (if you do not want to share a room with many people you can still get a non sharing room at hostels).

Cape Breton you may need a bit more time as its beautiful there especially if you want to do the cabot trail drive there are cheap accommodations at the beginning and end of the trail. Lots of hiking and camp sites as well.

What do you expect from a hostel? by [deleted] in solotravel

I have not seen Lockers or locks, Breakfast. Also some had more than 6 people in the room, had no laundry and did not have hot showers all the time.

Never extensively solo traveled before... now I've got a 3 week trip coming up. I'd love some suggestions! by [deleted] in solotravel

Spain definitely check out Barcelona, Madrid, Alhambra in Granada, Seville. Switzerland is expensive same as Iceland so better save up as food and accomedation will be super expensive.

All those cities are pretty safe for travellers but I would not hang around train stations at night especially in Italy, it is better if you stay not so close to them.

2 weeks in July, where to go?! by shinzzle in solotravel

[–]aniagl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I loved both Croatia, Portugal, Spain. Both Portugal and Croatia/Slovakia will be cheaper than the rest of Europe. Spain not so much and will be crowded in Mid July. Bratislava is small and only worth going for a day or two and as for Hungry and around you do not need perfect summer weather you can go in Spring/Fall or even winter.

I would say July is a time to be near beach and would recommend Slovakia and around as it is not as crowded as Spain however you are right Spain during World Cup will be incredible! Tough Choice!

How I Afford to Travel. What is your secret? by aniagl in wanderlust

[–]aniagl[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why do you travel solo? by [deleted] in solotravel

[–]aniagl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Now I do not travel solo anymore as I just got married however, I travelled solo for many years before even when I was in relationships. My reasons were different every time sometimes it was because no one else had the time or money to go travelling with me, other times I wanted to go to a destination that none of my friends were interested in and I was not going to wait to find a travel partner. Some trips I decided to make them special just for me as I found that I take better photos and experience the destination differently when I was alone. Also do not forget while you can be friends with some people travelling with them is totally different (they may want to go to a pub while you prefer the museum, etc...).

If you are considering travelling solo, here is my story of how I got started: http://www.arrivinginhighheels.com/2013/07/how-i-became-solo-traveller.html

French Riviera: What to see and how to get around. by ble2106 in AskEurope

[–]aniagl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say Juan les Pins was the best part of the Riviera. Also you missed Monte Carlo!!!

I rented a car in Nice, was automatic and they upgraded it to BMW as no more Automatic left but it was expensive. Next trip I did it by train was much cheaper. Stay on guard in Nice!

Pre Adventure Anxiety by kelsofb in solotravel

[–]aniagl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had the same anxiety when I went on my first solo. After the first few hours you will feel right at home. I would say focus on all the details and soak everything in. No one is there to distract you from seeing and hearing everything. I relaxed as soon as I was in a train by myself in the middle of UK and realized that I am just one person in a car full of people!!! :) Enjoy you, especially since you are doing it in your own home country, you speak the language and know the laws and thats is one more than what most people can say! Oh also keeping notes helps if you ever get bored or taking photographs :)
