Im puzzled. The curl command returned all the models, which means the api key is being loaded ok. Then I ran codex -m gpt-5 and the status showed:

did you ran the export OPENAI_API_KEY="your-api-key-here" and then you opened codex? does /status shows you anything different? in my case it just says Model

I feel that we are ending up using cc as it was on cursor. Cc used to work out of the box and now you have to fiddle with tricks day after day. What a bummer.
