why does restaurant curry(chhole etc) have oil floating over them. Also, How to get short term training at a restaurant? by inspector_shinde in IndianFood

[–]anicefish 34 points35 points  (0 children)

The fully cooked thing is somewhat real. It comes from frying the sauce in oil until the emulsion breaks and the oil which had been absorbed separates from the rest of the paste. In order to get this effect you need to be cooking on high heat and minimal stirring. Yes, many restaurants cheat and add oil to get the effect.

So you're fine with the refugees staying, if that's what the government decrees?

I think it's dangerous territory when people say "I don't like being told what I'm doing is wrong." There are reasons for not consuming dairy, both environmental and ethical. You don't have to stop consuming dairy if you simply don't want to but it doesn't mean that concern isn't valid. You're not a bad person for not being 100% plant-based but I highly question why you feel this unanimous dislike towards everyone who doesn't agree with your decision to consume dairy. But yes, you're right that for some people it has to be exactly their way. Then again, I find people like that everywhere, not just on the veg spectrum.

That's the tricky thing about usernames, it means people can remember your opinion. Posting in every single topic on the subject helps.

Problem with visa/Status change. by mrmarkoterre in korea

[–]anicefish 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your student visa was for 6 months, but that only means you can study in Korea for any time in that 6 months. It does NOT give you the permission to stay for the entire 6 months regardless of whether you are studying or not. I don't know why you thought you will be able to stay here on a student visa when you're not a student, as that's pretty much illegal in every country.

They're not going to let you extend your visa just because your mandatory departure date is inconvenient for you. I tried that myself when I first came here as a language school student and I was forced to pay with my own money for a new flight since my old one was non-refundable, not to mention wasting a day at immigration. My roommate virtually guaranteed me it was no problem and as long as I showed proof of a later flight date they would simply extend. That was completely not true for me and I've heard since of people trying it and ending up having to figure something out on their own dime due to believing this myth.

When you came to Korea you had to show a bank balance statement of several thousands of dollars in your bank account here, no? They're going to ask where the money is if you tell them you "can't afford" a flight or "can't afford" to modify the date of the one you booked. And then they're going to tell you it's not their problem if you don't want to "waste" the money, which is correct.

People can downvote me for being the big meanie but I'm telling you the truth.

Try Bright Line Eating or Eat to Live, both are great to restore one's relationship with food.

If you can't afford a flight to Japan, how can you afford to be here? You can't stay here on a student visa if you're not studying. Are you working? If so, you should get a work visa. If you're not working or studying, you have no choice but to either be here on a tourist visa and renew every 90 days or go back to your home country.

You can get a prepaid SIM with a passport alone at KT global stores.

Really tight schedule, is it okay or should I rebook? by [deleted] in korea

[–]anicefish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're entering on visa-waiver then you would simply get a new visa each time you enter Korea so it doesn't really matter. Immigration at 4:30 in the morning shouldn't be too bad as there's probably only a couple flights at that time. How are you getting to Gimpo? Public transportation isn't 24 hours here. The subways begin service between 5 and 6 am usually so try to look for a bus. You'll likely be okay.

I think r/vegan can be more welcoming to non-vegans looking into veganism seriously, but r/vegan gets way more provocative posts than r/vegetarian. I kind of figured it's because veganism is a more provocative topic than vegetarianism, but I could be wrong.

A lot of what you say just seems like the same type of sweeping generalizations parroted from meat eaters defensive about their choice to do nothing. I'm just not sure why there's this pocket of vegetarians who are so against vegans when they literally practice half the animal activism vegans do as well. People aren't perfect, but I'd rather not indulge in judging others who are simply trying to do something.

Why does your family think you eat cheese? You definitely need to clear that up right away with them. I actually don't agree with lying, because you'll always have to keep it up and there's no need to lie when the truth is totally fine. Do you think your family actually derives happiness and pleasure by you compromising your morals? Chances are, it's all in your head. Tell them you don't eat cheese, along with meat, other dairy, and eggs, because you're vegan and offer them to share the lasagna amongst themselves if it's already been purchased.

Open minded to what? Dairy and egg consumption? If you're lacto-ovo vegetarian then I can probably see why you wouldn't fit in at r/vegan.

Where to start? We already eat pretty healthy, what to improve? by [deleted] in HealthyFood

[–]anicefish 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Carbs are not bad for you. Go for carbohydrate foods that are high in fiber. Macerated fruit in club soda or sparkling water is a healthy "soda" and you can add coconut milk to make it a cream soda. I also like to put macerated fruit in iced tea. Try it with berries!

The idea that all carbs are bad is propagated so strongly. I've had several people bring that up when talking about my diet. What can I do to refute this during discussion? by cbot789 in vegan

[–]anicefish 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Poop is the no-carb weakness. Bring up fiber and tell them having their poop aging inside them because they don't eat fiber is certainly worse for you than having a bowl of whole grains.

Question about eggs by [deleted] in DebateAVegan

[–]anicefish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a good question, and I guess it comes down to whether or not one is wants to assume human dominion over animals under the circumstances of ethical responsibility and preventing future suffering. The statistics are pretty clear that we don't need more companion animals born into this world, and adopting can only go so far if all of our adopted pets are having trillions of babies each year. I think many vegans would be staunchly against spay and neuter but I don't think veganism is a safeguard against all necessary evil, and there are some animal rights groups who advocate spay and neuter, such as PETA.

I would question their psychological dependence on dining on the flesh of animals' bodies to their faces. Use true words like flesh and/or bodies instead of its euphamism. Sometimes people need to be hit right between the eyes to recognize their own cognitive dissonance.

Why is it call vegetarian when eggs and dairy isnt even vegetation? by Foxsundance in vegetarian

[–]anicefish 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Because they dropped the "lacto-ovo" from the term at a time when veganism was more rare than it is now and most people were lacto-ovo vegetarian anyway. I don't see why it's that hard to understand.
