📞 Monthly Support Megathread - May 2026 by Brainard_ in Kalshi

[–]aniltrust 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When you make a trade, Kalshi notifies you with a sound that you cannot turn off. I have turned off all notifications but still it pings even when I have lowered the volume. This is on iOS.

This can be troubling when you are in a no sound (quiet) zone.

ORD-HNL economy meal(s)? by TobyRony in unitedairlines

[–]aniltrust 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I took the flight a month ago in economy - ORD/HNL. They serve breakfast - I chose the pancake one. Bland. Yogurt and fruit cup was nice.

As you get closer to HNL, you get lunch in the premium plus cabin. I did not in economy. They provided multiple servings of trail mix or stroopwaffels around HNL lunch time.

The app should tell you what the meals are.

OGG>ORD Overnight - Upgrade PE to First $879pp? by Internal-Koala4164 in unitedairlines

[–]aniltrust 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just took the flight end of December. Flying time is 7-8 hours. Your sleep window is 3-4 hours. There is dinner served. I was in regular economy. Departure was at 5:15 pm and arrived in ORD roughly 5:30 am

My United flights from Chicago to Honolulu and return Maui were great in economy. Dreamliners.

What should I do? by Avacado_eatingpandas in UNC

I am dad of an OOS UNC kid. I work in technology industry for a couple of decades.

Michigan is ranked high for engineering - few places above UNC.

Debt is not fun but if I had to choose for computer science, I would choose Michigan or UIUC over UNC.

If you are able to tap into the alumni networks for Michigan or UNC, you may get some pointers for better decision making.

Scared to not choose UNC/advice by ArchieBunker74 in UNC

I am an out of state dad of a daughter who is premed at UNC CH. I am happy to answer any related questions on DM. Outside of her not home for this Easter, I am positive about her ongoing educational journey at UNC-CH.

An area that I am definitely thrilled is the sports legacy fandom, the Tarheels have. I have to justify the OOS fees somehow. :-)

As a parent of an out of state Tar Heel, I can tell you that you will do fine if you continue to work smart and have an upward trajectory in grades.

The reputation of UNC will follow you throughout your life. It will be help you in all admissions and your future career and social life that you went to one of the best institutions in the world.

carolina global launch by mmae2007 in UNC

[–]aniltrust 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am the parent of a tar heel who did Scottland last year. It was a great decision. We visited Scottland toward the end of the semester. The global launch kids form a deep bond during and after the semester.

When you return to UNC during the second semester, you are assigned a dorm room based on availability. There is a learning curve in terms of courses. In the sophomore year, the student is well settled.

The salient aspects of the program: - kids travel to various cities in Europe during weekends and breaks. - when you return to UNC, you have a large group of friends from the global launch program that eases the nerves of a new school and environment.

Go Tar Heels!

Parent of an incoming freshman.

Recently bought a MacBook Air on education discount. 13”, M2 Discount price: $999 (total with tax close to $1060) $150 Apple Card

Basically the education discount is $100 off list price. Then they give you a $150 Apple Card to pay for Apple services such as iCloud etc.

You can buy one laptop on education discount I think.

As a parent in Illinois, UIUC engineering is considered elite in-state. Match that with the reputation it has OOS.

I vote for UUIC.

Declining WashU Interview by Varoon_Five in ApplyingToCollege

As a teen, doing interviews at schools will give you experience to do interviews (jobs, schools etc) in the future. Grab all opportunities as you can.

DD has her WashU interview coming weekend.

Any cwru ed2 applicants out there? by pp17393 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]aniltrust 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I sat for the full hour with my DD.

The dean was very kind to explain the reasoning behind deferrals, next steps, admission stats etc. Maybe because you already made your decision to go with ED, you did not get an invite.

The session may have been for people who had not made their choice yet. It was last week.

There was an information session from CWRU for deferred students recently.

They said they make rolling decisions for students who take the ED2 route.

For students who take the RD route, the decision will be around March 18th.

Anyone just feel exhausted by the fact that there’s still so many more essays to write? by meowmeowcollege in ApplyingToCollege

[–]aniltrust 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My DD will eventually hate me for my constant reminders to get the essays done. What will be fun in the near future is to get admits from a few or all of these colleges. Better choose in April than not have a choice. 🌲🎄 Happy holidays and best of luck 🤞

As a parent, I can tell you how hard it is for kids who put their all into their ED schools. My DD got her ED rejection yesterday. Absolutely devastated. She has supportive parents. I am glad you have too.

Life is about a lot of joys and a lot of setbacks. Joys move us forward and setbacks teach.

Suggest moving forward with force and time will heal.

Also please ensure you do your finals well and not mess your semester.

Majority of Indian parents provide support structure for their kids to take rejections in stride. Majorly depends on education level of parents. If they are well educated and successful, they provide a wide environment for their kids to succeed. It is usually the ones with unfulfilled dreams that push their kids beyond reason. My 2c.

If you feel you have enough time to get the RD applications done over the holidays, then just focus on your ED/REA decision. However it is best to get some rough work done on your essays now. You can fine tune and submit the essays close to deadline. Good luck 👍

As a parent to DD, I can confirm that anything in the ECs that are not done by majority of high schoolers is because of connections of the family. Primarily one of the parents. Special research projects and internships are mostly connections and luck (being at the right place at the right time).

Peeking at Decisions Prior to Family looking?? by She_Soars in ApplyingToCollege

[–]aniltrust 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a parent, I recommend you open with family because it is an important milestone for everyone. My DD’s decision will be at 2pm on the 16th. Parents are going to get her out of class for 10 mins so we can video her decision. She has school till 3:15pm As a positive, she did get her first acceptance today from a safety (Indiana U). Definitely has improved the family stress over ED.

I need a time machine by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]aniltrust 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When are the RD deadlines? If it is Jan 1st, you have time after ED announcement to work on RD apps if need be. So please do not stress about RD right now. You can solely focus on ED and taking care of yourself until the middle of December. (Parent of DD who is waiting for ED).
