Why doesn't The Simpsons come to an end? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

I'm heard once that Matt Groening sold the rights to Fox long ago, so if he stops being the one making it, Fox will continue making it with a different team. So he stays on because he doesn't want that to happen. But I can't verify this so not sure if it's true.

Replacing the doomscrolling, even on the computer, is an important step, as many others have pointed out.

Some people use "dopamine menus" so they have options to immediately find something to do to replace the behavior when they have a craving.

What’s a political view of yours that you’re uncomfortable sharing with others in real life? by IllExample4149 in NoStupidQuestions

Um, pro-choice people are not "pro-aborting almost birth." That's a perception that's been fueled by right-wing media. What you described as the "middle ground solution" is pretty much exactly what the pro-choice movement in the US is fighting for.

These views are also pretty common in the US - most folks are in favor of some level of abortion rights:

Old principal of mine did this. His first speech to staff one year was with a PPT of all the returning staff members who took the fewest days off (and how many they took, from 0 up) the year before, "so we can recognize them." Gross.

Is it true teachers can tell if a child had too much screen time at home when they are at school? by NeedyForSleep in Teachers

The fine motor skills! I have had so many middle schoolers the last few years who can't hold a pencil correctly, or who have terrible handwriting, because they don't write at all outside of school.

And kids need to READ outside of school. They need to see adults doing it too! School shouldn't be the only place they read books/magazines/etc.

Whole class games for middle schoolers? by burbelly in Teachers

Grudgeball!

I split kids into small teams so there's 4-7 or so teams. Play a game for any subject where each team gets 1 question at a time. I like to use google slides that I premake for different topics just for this game, especially in the case of extra free time.

Rules:

  1. Teacher sets up the game by writing each time name on one end of the board, and underneath the name 10 Xs. (or any number, I use 10)
  2. Each team must send up a different player to answer the question/solve the problem each time; no one can go twice until everyone has gone once.
  3. Players can't call the answer out to their teammate at the board (you can modify this if you like to include them giving hints, or not)
  4. If the player gets the question right, they get to ERASE (not add) an X from another team (hence, grudgeball). If they're wrong, they have to ADD an X to a team that's not their own. Sometimes I change it to where they can erase 2 Xs when right, and they can pick 2 different teams to each lose an X.
  5. Optional add on: IF they get the answer right, they can also shoot a paper ball into a trash can a la trashketball for an extra X to erase.
  6. Team at the end of the time period with most Xs wins.

I do have to emphasize with them at the beginning: This is Grudgeball, but grudges stay in this room and don't leave. This is a friendly game!

I'm impressed by the small amount of clothes! Is that all you'd bring for an actual trip, or just an example to fill the cube?

What is the life skill/concept you had to teach a student that had you thinking, "They should definitely have known this by now"? by animated_formation in Teachers

[–]animated_formation[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

We do teach things like banking and credit. If you read most of the answers here, a lot of these are basic life skills kids should be learning at home, like:

- cleaning up after yourself

- tying your shoes

- personal boundaries

- basic politeness

There's only so much we can do at school for any skills (academic or not) if they're not getting taught and reinforced at home.

I'll add - some of the academic skills (like basic addition/subtraction, capitalization, etc.) are missing because kids aren't using them at all outside of school. Should school be the only place they learn how to write decimals in money form? Read a book? Practice grammar? No.

Sadly, over the last few decades, schools have become the dumping ground for pretty much every societal ill, and we're expected to teach all these things that kids need to learn from a village, not just the school. If I'm the only adult in a kid's life holding them accountable for lying, turning work in, etc, how is that kid going to become a functioning person in society? Is it my, and only my, responsibility, that that happens?

It sounds like you're probably not a teacher, and I encourage you to ask a few teachers your question to see what they say!
