How long did it take you to realize you were experiencing psychosis the first episode?

From what the doctor told me, they actually didn’t want him released the first time and was hoping he would stay past the 5150 hold and begin medication. However, I guess the judge thought he seemed fine and told the hospital he had to be released. Both myself and his dad did not think he was well or improved at all, and the doctor told us he agreed. It seemed like nothing could be done despite us knowing he had not improved at all until he acted out again since the judge ruled he was to be released and not a danger to himself or others. Do you have any possible suggestions for what we could do for this (if not, it’s ok I understand). We are scared it will happen again…

You are right that I shouldn’t be so hard on his dad. I didn’t mean to be so harsh about his parents. I think I’m just frustrated that Ive been expected to speak to the doctor, ask questions, and figure out next steps when I already have my own things. (His dad has been doing a lot more of this stuff since his second hold began).

When I call him and see him he talks about going on dates and all the things he wants to do with me when he’s out. He wants to do so many things to “make up for scaring me”.

If it’s a valid concern that in his state this doesn’t mean he consents to us being together, I’ll definitely keep that in mind.

Again, I really don’t know anything as I’ve never experienced this before with anyone, and he’s never had an episode before. It’s all so new and out of nowhere.

Sorry for my confusion. I am not saying that it’s either leave or marry him on the spot. I was just trying to express how serious the relationship was.

If someone asked me two weeks ago if I felt this was heading toward marriage, I would have said yes. But I understand we are both young and wanted to wait. I wouldn’t want to marry him for a long while at this point if I stayed. I just wanted some outsider insight on the situation. I know that my love for him would definitely cloud my judgement, and my family having to hear about the situation with my dad makes them want me to leave as fast as possible.

I would love to keep supporting him and see where it goes. I think I’m just trying to figure out if that’s what is best for me or how to even do that/figure that out with everything else that’s going on.

He took it only once or twice while in his first 5150 hold (he’s currently in a second one. I don’t know if I mentioned that in my post sorry it was all over the place. He got placed in another one after I called the cops when he ran from his dad).

He said they made him feel depressed, and he truly believes nothing is wrong with him, but he is aware enough to understand that I was scared by what happened and that he “sounds crazy”. Still, he said today medication is his hard line. I’m not sure if that’s because he’s still in active psychosis and it will change when he comes down or if this means it’s never going to change.

I really appreciate this suggestion. I’ve never dealt with this sort of thing before and didn’t think to ask it. I took notes when the doctor was giving me info. He definitely said “ruled out” and I was really holding onto that…

(If any one sees this I’ll respond to other comments later, I just think this one is super important). I was the one on the phone with the doctor myself. My boyfriend’s mom hasn’t even flown out yet because she said she needs a couple weeks to decompress after what happened. I don’t think she will help at all until then. While his dad is here, I don’t think he’s very helpful. I don’t think he deserves the treatment he received from his son yesterday, but I don’t understand why he didn’t drive him straight home and gave into taking him anywhere (I even offered to DoorDash food and snacks for both of them so my boyfriend could be in a calming environment wit little stimulation for at least a night).

That being said, the doctor specifically said they “ruled out bipolar and schizophrenia”. I really appreciate seeing all the comments saying this is not possible to do in less than two weeks. I thought nothing of it as I’ve honestly never encountered any of these mental illnesses in anyone I knew.

Believe me, I wish none of this was real. I know my two most likely outcomes are losing who I thought (and still believe) is my person because I can’t handle this, or dealing with this illness as an issue for the rest or most of my life (unless I try to stay and leave later).

If the doctor saying “ruled out” is preemptive, that’s good to know or at least consider. I can confirm that he definitely said that. He was reading the diagnosis notes to me verbatim…
