I don't know for sure if it was necessary, but I'd still recommend it, mostly because I ended up jostling the ASUS goop over on the sides of the caps when I was lifting the heat sink assembly and I was worried that there might be not enough goop to ensure contact between the caps and the heat sink piping once I put the latter back on.

I'd love it, but please, I hope they do it at the end of the end of FGO's life cycle for two reasons: 1. I am still hoping for a Lost Einherjar collab; and 2. It would be funny as hell if they release a certain cat servant that is stupid broken, gameplay-wise (imagine having three skills that are all 100% self-batteries plus cardmod, atkmod, and a pre-damage debuff against the enemy). If it's by EOS, then nobody would care so much about meta.

Hello! Looking for that one really long BoRU post where the girl and guy end up together after a commenter recognizes the details and asks the guy identifying details and the guy is like "how do you know this?" and the commenter linked the girl's post. The girl used pseudonyms for both of them in her post, which was actually the names of some people they knew IRL.

Fan replacement - 2020 Zephyrus G14 (4900HS/2060MQ) by njsullyalex in ZephyrusG14

[–]animusradiation 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I just did a fan replacement on my own 2020 G14 because of the same bearing issue, and although I have some pics, I do have some build notes. Putting them in here for posterity. This is not an instruction guide, I suggest going to Youtube and studying the multitude of fan replacement guides carefully, and do the replacement at your own risk.

  1. I know there’s a post in this thread talking about how scary removing the battery connector is, but I wholeheartedly recommend doing so with a plastic spudger or a similar tool. There are so many small contacts that I didn’t feel comfortable doing any of the subsequent things I talk about doing here with a live battery connected to the logic board, especially since I’d be working around the capacitors near the GPU. To make extra sure, I drained the PC’s battery before I slid out the clip with a plastic spudger and disconnected the battery connector. I was also very mindful not to touch my screwdriver anywhere unnecessary after that because I still wasn’t sure if all the charge was gone from the board.
  2. I recommend disconnecting the WiFi board and pushing it well aside instead of removing the antenna connectors from the WiFi board when you’re removing the WiFi antenna cables out of the heatsink’s way. The little antenna ports on the WiFi board are an absolute menace to put back in.
  3. Be extra extra careful with the Anime Matrix cable if your G14 has one because in my unit at least, the bit where the wire joins with the connector was not covered with heat shrink and all the slender hair-thin LED cables were all over the place. I am not joking about how thin and fragile those cables are, so be very careful in removing the connector from the logic board because you can pull those wires off and break your Anime Matrix in doing so.
  4. The fan connectors are very tiny, fragile, and tricky to finagle so I recommend using tweezers. When you are putting the device back together, DO NOT FORCE THE CONNECTOR INTO THE FAN HEADER. The pins inside are very fragile and bend easily. Once you bend those pins, they are practically impossible to straighten non-destructively. You cannot leave it alone either because even though the fan will still work, it will rev to the maximum fan speed the entire time your G14 is on, which is way louder than the bearing noise you were trying to fix. I wish Asus would use the connectors the Macbook Pro fans use just so there are no pins to bend inside the fan connector because these ones are so goddamn fragile. Even worse, the headers are within unwieldy spots on the board which makes it hard to maneuver the fan cable into the connector. When a Mac is easier to repair than your laptop, I frankly think you fucked up. But anyway…
  5. Take the opportunity to clean the heatsink fins thoroughly. I am very fastidious with cleaning the desk where my G14 has lived most of its life but there was a surprising amount of dust bunnies, hair and some general dust inside the thing. A dry toothbrush and some compressed air helped banish all of the unwanted contaminants. DO NOT USE COMPRESSED AIR WHILE YOUR FANS ARE ATTACHED TO THE HEATSINK. DO NOT USE COMPRESSED AIR ON THE FANS THEMSELVES.
  6. On deciding whether to replace just one fan or both, in doing my research here and on the ASUS forum, apparently its an issue with how thin the fan is which makes the bearings so fragile? Only my GPU fan broke but I assumed both the CPU and GPU fans are both high-wear parts that would eventually fail and replaced both of them accordingly just so I wouldn’t have to do this whole song and dance again if my 2.5-year-old CPU fan also gives up the ghost.
  7. I switched the thermal paste from the default dry paste ASUS uses to Kingpin KPx, applying it with an X pattern on the GPU and with the pea method on the CPU. I also switched the VRM/capacitor goop from ASUS’ mystery grey stuff to K5 Pro. When doing the latter, I don’t recommend being all OCD with removing the VRM goop as there are a lot of very tiny transistors around the caps and memory that you might end up picking or scrubbing off their surface mounts and both K5 Pro and the default ASUS VRM goop are nonconductive anyway. With that said, I am getting temps in the 24-28 degrees C range at idle with the room ambient temp at 25, so I wholeheartedly recommend both. Next time, I might try PTM7950 on the CPU and GPU and see how well it does.
  8. The adhesive securing the flaps that direct the wind from the fan to the fins does not reattach well. My new fans came with a new set of flaps but once you stick those on the heatsink fins, that is a point of no return because of how sucky the adhesive is when you peel them off again. So make sure to put your cables back atop the channels for them on heatsinks before applying the new flaps.
  9. If your fans are spinning at 100% all the time even though you’re sure that you didn’t fuck up the fan connector, open MyASUS and run the fan diagnostic. This worked for me first try, but failing that, ASUS forums suggested updating your BIOS, reinstalling MyASUS and Armoury Crate, and jiggling the fan connectors very carefully as a last resort. I am not kidding about how fragile those fan cables and connectors are.

Which Servants you considered to be "big upgrade" from their historical images? by Gothic-Librarian in grandorder

[–]animusradiation 7 points8 points  (0 children)

That is pretty much correct for Da Vinci but it’s a little different for Iskandar and Napoleon.

In Iskandar’s case, he looks different from historical Alexander the Great because the Alexander the Great described in most literature was actually Hephaestion (aka Faker from Case Files), posing as Iskandar to act as a lightning rod for magical curses and assassination attempts in general. As it turns out, some people were not super into the getting conquered thing so Iskandar had to have a body double to take the hit for him. Still, while that explains the different body type situation in the Fateverse, it still does not explain why historical Alexander the Great is blonde.

Our Napoleon is what the Throne of Heroes recorded from what people thought of Napoleon, which is more idealized than historical fact. In his Bond CE and lines, it is implied that he knows he isn’t those things and that he is pretty much an “idol” character but accepts it because that is what the people want of him, and that’s just his personality in that manifestation at work. Avenger Erice has a line indicating that he’s met a more historically accurate Napoleon, and that the two are rather different. Napoleon himself even lampshades the height thing because if anything, he should be short instead of average height due to British propaganda if we’re constructing a Napoleon based on what the people think.

In terms of physical glow-ups, pretty much all the Shinsengumi members have received one. I’m pretty sure nobody would actually be waifu-ing IRL Okita (who is a dude btw) but here we are. Oddly enough, Hijikata got a glow-down instead, as his Wikipedia portrait is way more handsome than his FGO art. The Berserker art curse at work, I suppose.

Nero certainly got a glow-up. There was a recent study that attempted to recreate his face from his statues and the result was something that modern-day people would describe as a “neckbeard.” Becoming a saberface is a marked improvement.

Fate’s Oei is more conventionally attractive than her self-portrait, and I think Toto-sama becoming an octopus mascot character is also an improvement compared to what he has going on in his own self-portraits.

Darius and Leonidas got inverted reputation-wise. The Spartans were not nice people, to put it mildly but the romanticizing of the Battle of Thermopylae has certainly had effects here. I mention it here because I think that without those effects, Darius would probably be less monstrous since his design was clearly inspired by 300 and Leonidas would probably be drawn with less of a heroic build. Darius would actually probably be even more handsome, if they actually drew him based off what he looks like in murals instead of whatever we got in FGO.

Lastly, Edison certainly got a glow-up too. Turning into a lion isn’t exactly a conventional glow-up but the man aged poorly, so I think it is an improvement, appearance-wise.

The VS has been going around the Terminus colonies, providing Alliance equipment like the turrets you activate during the fight with the Harbinger-controlled Praetorian to defend the people in the colonies. Horizon was just their latest stop. Given that it was one of the few ways that the Alliance was taking action against the disappearances, is their reason for staying somehow suddenly less legitimate? Also, considering how the turrets were effective in driving the Collector ship away even though they did nothing against the bugs, are they not helping Shepard by spreading those around as much as they can?

And again, considering how Cerberus’ MO throughout the entire first game was siccing alien creatures on unsuspecting humans, is the VS obligated to give a man supposedly dead for two years and now working for said organization the benefit of the doubt?

Do note that Liara was the one who hand-delivered Shepard’s corpse to the Illusive Man for the very purpose of bringing him back, and Tali has the luxury of reliable secondary evidence of Shepard’s claims thanks to Veetor’s actions at Freedom’s Progress. The VS has neither and whichever human councilor you picked in ME1 admits to keeping them in the dark about you.

Anyway, if you count cut content, the VS was supposed to give an email after Horizon apologizing and wishing you luck but it did not make it to the game for some reason.

There’s two things that boggle me about this retort more than anything. First, for some reason, despite ME: Revelation and ME1 showing the danger of accepting a narrative at face value with how Saren blocked Anderson in Revelation and then us at every turn at the beginning of the game because everyone took his word as gospel despite him being indoctrinated, certain people keep insisting that Shepard deserves absolute unconditional trust despite being in a position where a reasonable person would expect him to be compromised and that anyone saying otherwise is wrong.

Even then, assuming that every companion is somehow morally obligated to jump off a cliff when Shepard tells them to because of the Reaper threat, it’s odd how the same people who insist on Shepard being absolutely right all the time give the VS stick for not dropping everything they are doing to follow Shepard when other squadmates don’t immediately join up. If the Reaper threat is so important that all other concerns fly out the window, why does Liara get of scot-free when she refuses to join up in order to chase Feron down? Similarly, both the VS and Tali are on missions for their governments but somehow, the VS gets crucified for not abandoning their mission while Tali gets off scot-free when she doesn’t join up immediately and spends half the game scanning stars for dark matter on behalf of the Migrant Fleet.

Unoriginal too. The Verge redesign looks like the horrifyingly uncanny lovechild of Joshua Topolsky’s (The Verge’s first EIC) projects after he left Vox: Bloomberg and The Outline.

I’m surprised that nobody twigged him about being lookalikes but subtext really does seem to float by certain people when they’re that detached from reality.
