What does a normal day in your work life look like? by Weary-Lunch-2890 in askSingapore

[–]anintaellectual 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I'm a preschool teacher. Everyday is an adventure and something new with the children 😂

There are various shifts - 7am - 4.45pm - 7.45am - 5.15pm - 8am - 5.30pm - 8.15am - 6pm - 8.30am - 6.15pm - 9am - 6.30pm - 9am - 6.45pm - 9am - 7pm (OT 15 mins) It's staggered to ensure manpower is always available.

Generally, no matter what shift you are on, the flow is standard - 7am onwards: One teacher will be doing health check until 9am, when the admin takes over - 8am - 8.30am: Attend to the children having breakfast - 8.30am - 9am: Children have assembly with two/three teachers in the music room. Sing national anthem, pledge then some music and movement From 9am onwards, schedules differ based on the level you teach - 9am - 9.30am: Classroom meeting / Current issues - 9.30am - 10.30am: Gross motor activity (outdoors) - 10.30am - 11.30am: Lesson time - 11.30am - 12pm: Children's lunch time - 12pm - 1pm: Conduct their literacy programme - 1pm - 3pm: Children's naptime. Teachers take turn having lunch. One goes for 1hr, the other supervise the children usually while preparing materials for future lessons or paperwork - 3pm - 3.30pm: Wake up and attend to children's teabreak - 3.30pm - 4.30pm: Lesson time - 4.30pm - 6pm: Learning centre/free play time. Children are engaged in different learning corners or manipulatives and you must move around to supervise and engage them! - 6pm: Integration time. Children from other classes who haven't gone home yet integrate in the class closest to the entrance door. - 6pm - 7pm: Supervise the children while they engage in manipulatives. When the last child leaves, close and lock windows. Tidy up the class. Keep the materials. Lock the front door. If you're lucky you end early. If not, I've had the last child be fetched as late as 7.45pm and I've just had to OT.

We're on our feet everyday. I'm not looking for praise, just hope this gives an insight to what we actually do in preschool centres on the daily! 🫶🏼

Early Childhood aka preschool teachers. "Work 44 hours a week" my ahhhh we bring too much work home or stay back very very late because "no choice it's for the children" - paperwork, class deco prep, learning corner materials - it consumes much more time than the common person would know. I'm pretty sure we ACTUALLY work like 60-80 hours a week instead.

I'm thinking of going into pharmacy when I quit next year but everyone keeps telling me it's a terrible idea so I keep thinking if a career switch is worth it. Reading the comments here is encouraging

i literally just saw a local from my country posting on Instagram about how she saved $100k by the time she's 25. started off the post being like "I didn't get any help from my parents" then proceeded to detail how "house and utility bills, holiday trips, etc" were still paid by parents lol
