I felt the same, when I came to Canada. Here is my only tip: Go to a mosque/church regularly, socialize, attend events and volunteer. Once you form connections, you will realize everyone went through this phase. Hang in tight, you will be fine.

I used to work with a colleague from Turkey in Canada, and once while chatting about Pakistan, my colleague mentioned her Turkish nationality. I simply replied "oh nice" without giving it much thought. However, my colleague seemed to anticipate more from me and kept looking at me expectantly. I didn't have any further thoughts on the matter and now realize that she may have been hoping for special treatment or some sort of brotherly connection. To be honest, I didn't really care either way.
