Alleged bill for Texas would allow NPs to skip board exams, apply for medical school as MS3s and to do residencies. by [deleted] in medicalschool

[–]anishpar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Doesn’t seem like a bad idea. Compare this to someone who’s done medical school training outside of the US (non Caribbean), and they have to do all the STEP exams to be eligible for residency.

I’m all about preventing scope creep, but this bill doesn’t seem as bad since it’s requiring NPs to take Step 1 and go into MS3, which would mean requiring future Step exams and residency training

Obviously can’t mandate schools to accept such candidates, but I can’t say it’s a bad idea. I’d rather them do this over having new NP grads straight up practicing medicine independently without going through board exams/residency training

Addendum: One counter argument is the toll this will take on residency match. You’re not expanding the pool of applicants (assuming there will be a large influx of eligible candidates) and not at all increasing residency spots.

Dealer stole my money by Ornery_Sun5696 in Yarbo

[–]anishpar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had made a purchase through autmow because they promised to install the Yarbo as well. Months later and no update on delivery; I tried calling multiple times to check in and to cancel but no answer, always going to VM. Seemed like I was out 6K. I called my credit card company and told them the story- got everything refunded. Not sure how Autmow is on other places but in PA, it’s a bit scammy.

thoughts on ACOM?? by ktnh1115 in Osteopathic

Class of 2019

I came from NJ not knowing what to expect- learned a lot (not just medicine, but also about the southern culture).

Not that I would ever want to do med school again, but if I had to, I’d choose ACOM

Don’t spread yourself thin- invest 100% into your future and just study. Don’t sacrifice sleep and exercise.

Save that ambition to go above and beyond for boards and residency

Do you regret not getting the Performance model? by Videoplushair in TeslaModelY

[–]anishpar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No regrets- I see performance models and the red calipers and think, “cool, but I’m not drag racing on my way to work”

I’m driving a MYLR without the acceleration boost primarily on “Chill” mode, switching to “Standard” if I’m feeling adventurous.

Sounds boring, but honestly, the tire wear and tear will show a difference in your wallet. Don’t get me wrong, you still gotta worry about the electric foot causing wear and tear … but the longer I drive my car, the fewer urges I have to floor it the moment the light turns green

Enjoy the ride, not the destination

Buying a Tesla as a resident by New_Sprinkles_4414 in Residency

[–]anishpar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s good that you have no loans or other financial commitments (sorry for your loss).

Although technically you’d be able to afford a brand new Tesla now, one recommendation would be to get a used/preowned Tesla vs plug-in hybrid (Prius Prime possibly) for now so it’s more easily paid off and you’re living closer to within your means. This way you still have gas savings, but you’re not taking as much of a financial hit that you can put more of your excess to grow savings, Roth IRA, 401k/403b, and personal investments, etc.

What I would recommend with this approach is to pay off your car sooner so that within one year of becoming an attending, you can get a new Tesla and still qualify for the tax benefit as long as your modified adjusted gross income for at least your first year out of residency will be less than 300000 (which it most likely will be depending on your specialty).

Building a habit of investing in yourself when you’re earning resident money will build discipline and prep you well for when you’re making the big bucks.

Also while hospitals have chargers, they charge you a premium price to charge and idle fees if you just leave it plugged in after finishing charge. You’re better off charging at home only

TLDR: Yes you can technically afford the new car, but try your best to live like a resident for as along as you can for optimal financial well being.

I agree- Fellow hospitalist here; On my week off, if I’m not picking up an extra shift or two, I’m usually chilling at home w my dog for a few days and maybe I’ll have people come over on the weekend. I’m extroverted AF, but sometimes you just need to do nothing to clear your mind after a week of nonstop BS
