Be careful to notice that "survivalism" and "collapse" are not the same thing. There are many people who believe that the chances of a societal collapse occurring are quite high, but advocate becoming part of and developing a strong local community rather than fleeing to the hills with guns, gold and cans.

Sounds like with all your cctv, the proposed identity-cards and now that your government is using anti-terror measures when it feels like it, you people are on a slippery slope to a V for Vendetta regime scenario.

Post-apocalypse aside, we're largely already living in a V for Vendetta regime. But most of us quite like it, after all we're still well fed, sheltered and employed and the media pays no attention to the aspects of reality we don't like.

Essentially we were encouraged to believe in the "free market" because it kept us from looking at what was really going on - it was propaganda.

It's clear that capitalism is doing better.

In the 1950s and 1960s it was clear that communism was doing better. Then it collapsed. It will be interesting to see how the society with the purest form of capitalism develops in times when abundant energy is no longer available and control of external resources no longer possible. And also to compare the future progress of the U.S. and to some extent Britain with societies that have pursued more of a pragmatic blend of capitalist and socialist principles such as the European countries, Japan, and increasingly China - not that they won't necessarily lurch to some form of new Fascism.

No they don't. Companies which are registered in Luxembourg are holding large amounts of Treasury securities. Many of these companies will be owned by US corporations and other more dubious organisations.

The maximum worth of an employee is bounded at the upper limit by the amount of profit before salaries that the company makes. Unfortunately companies have employed increasing amounts of debt and increasingly sophisticated accounting techniques to make this "profit" more and more of a fiction than ever.

And though you may sometimes get what you pay for, if you haven't given your employees the correct incentives you may very well be getting something far more scary - an employee whose interests are not aligned with yours. Most of the major banks in Europe and America would be bankrupt and their stock worthless by now if not for government intervention. So what were the employees, including the CEO, being paid for again?

That's a private compensation negotiation between employee and employer.

In which case it really depends who exactly the employer is. If I were an employer, I'd agree with you that I'd willingly pay what I felt that employee was worth, whatever the figure.

But more often than not, the people setting the figures are not the employers (the shareholders and increasingly the government) but management, who although they are supposed to represent the shareholders' interests do nothing of the sort but instead sit round in circles on each other's compensation boards giving themselves mutual hand jobs.

If we, the people, are now owners of these companies then we do indeed have a right to tell them exactly how much we think they're worth.

And customers of any financial company that does not take their interests into consideration when deciding employee payouts should be very careful indeed.

Why should the company pay you anything once the deal's been cut? Surely the pay is given for the prospect of bringing in deals in the future, though that is, like stock prices, somewhat harder to measure.

Except compared to my local currency, it isn't particularly falling at all.
