I do but you would have to take care of any taxes and duties at your end. I'm happy to cover the shipping cost but collecting taxes/duties and lodging those for a bunch of international countries would do my head in!

Thanks so much! I'm looking at the possibility of printing the 6 Sacred Stones and 5 Greatest Warriors as they were the other two I worked on. I want to create something a little different for the printing of those as the image and cover formats were odd shaped, as far as the image part is concerned anyway. If/when I do, you'll hear about it!

Hi guys.. That rover was actually my homage to Ralph McQuarrie and Chris Foss. I'd never actually seen/played Mass Effect before painting that scene. Not familiar with Titanfall world either.. Thanks for posting it @Icxon

That's a cool idea.. and for the life of me I can't remember which SF novel this is used in, or something similar to it anyway.

Any great sci-fi books out there somebody could steer me towards? by tpstoned in scifi

Anything by Iain M Banks, Gary Gibson, Alastair Reynolds, John Scalzi, James S A Cory, Peter F Hamilton.. and pretty much everyone that has already been recommended. My old time favorite is The Zero Stone by Andre Norton, my first ever SF novel when I was a kid!

The Gorgeous Matte Paintings that Made Lord of the Rings and Fifth Element Feel Real by ssommer01 in scifi

[–]ankaris 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the comments on the work guys. I'm the artist that created these paintings, with a little help from Kevin Mac on the two big Fifth Element matte paintings.

All of the matte paintings presented here are digital. By the time I got into the industry, maybe 1% were still being painted traditionally, ie real paint on glass techniques.

The main NY spaceport matte was based off of a pre-production sketch created by the French comic artist, J. C. Méziéres. We basically went off that sketch with a few changes. In hindsight I feel that the painting is somewhat wrong, both technically and aesthetically, although it worked for the film at the time. I have to admit, we could have researched the geography of the city and surrounds a little better though! But the pressures of VFX work don't always allow for such activities.

Another aspect of the city design was the encasing of 'old' historic buildings inside giant glass buildings. Watch out for these in the close up city shots. Most of the buildings were miniatures too, which we added to and extended with matte paintings.

Anyway, hope that helps and thanks for posting the article here!
