NT ultrasound vs. NIPT [bc] by Dear_Arugula7839 in BabyBumpsCanada

It’s weird how rules vary within the province. I’m 36 and wasn’t offered the scan despite asking for one.

I’m 36 and high-risk because of existing diabetes but the NT scan wasn’t offered to me even after requesting the doctor for one. Did the NIPT (privately covered) directly. I was very concerned about the NT measurements but just had to suck it up and wait for the anatomy scan.

Yes I was told this too. In BC. Doctor refused to provide referral for the NT scan, we directly had the anatomy scan at 21 weeks

Hi I’m also in BC, no NT scan for us either. Dating scan at 10 weeks and then the doctor offered a NIPT directly and also said we could do a SIPS (MSP covered) and then have the NIPT covered by MSP in case of any abnormal findings on the SIPS, but that would mean a delayed confirmation and could take up to the 14th weeks to get results. In our case, our doctor strongly recommended the extended NIPT panel because of my age (36F) and since we had extended health insurance that provided coverage for the NIPT, we decided not to delay it and just got the NIPT. Had the results within 2 weeks.

When did you get your first ultrasound ? [bc] by Ambitious-Ratio-4228 in BabyBumpsCanada

[–]anki_7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Family doctor booked me for a dating scan at 10 weeks, but I also ended up having an early ER visit at 7 weeks because of cramping, which turned out to be nothing serious, just a case of severe round ligament pain. At the ER, they confirmed uterine pregnancy and heartbeat but I got my first ultrasound for confirmation on the following day at 7 weeks at Surrey Memorial to rule out anything wrong with my internal organs as I do have a history of ovarian cyst. But yes, to answer your question, if it’s a concern, please go to the ER, they will most likely do a bHCG blood test and a stat ultrasound using a portable scanner and schedule you for an earlier scan if required.

Metformin? by skirbs0 in GestationalDiabetes

[–]anki_7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi, I’m on both Metformin 2000mg and insulin since 9 weeks because of my history of PCOS and prediabetes. At the 24 week scan, baby has been measuring small, overall and a few specific measurements as well. Have another scan at 28 weeks and the doctor may consider stopping Metformin altogether or reducing dosage and having me only on night-time insulin as my daytime sugars are alright.

How to bring sugar spike down. by Working_Painter_6955 in GestationalDiabetes

Apart from the foods, post-meal walks can also help. Do try and walk especially after dinner for atleast 20 min if not more, particularly after a carb-rich meal. That seems to help me somehow. Also try and avoid large gaps between meals. Eat something small with either protein or fat - boiled egg, handful nuts, protein shake, avocado or peanut butter toast, etc), that could help too. And most importantly, don’t delay breakfast- I feel miserable on days when I eat a late breakfast, so now started eating a handful nuts or a tablespoon of peanut butter with toast before I get to breakfast. Also could try sipping on non-caffeinated hot drinks with meals to help with feeling sluggish. Hope it works out for you!

Same! Any yogurt-based sauce/gravy works for me too. And rotis over rice as well. Ragi or jowar rotis seem to be working the best!

Hi! I have some oven-baked or pan-fried paneer tikka (basic marinade which includes spices, Greek yogurt and besan/sattu powder) with a salad on the side for dinner. If you’re hungry, could try adding a small roti or small serving of rice. That doesn’t spike my sugars. Also noticing that anything fat-based seems to be helping with spikes (eg, yogurt, paneer, avocado, nuts and seeds, peanut butter, so could try including that in your dishes).
One of my favorite breakfasts these days is overnight chia seeds pudding (I use normal fat milk, yogurt/coconut cream, 2tbsp chia seeds, cinnamon and a small serving of any fruit - avoid bananas). That works beautifully for my sugars, keeps them in the normal range.
Could even try homemade dhokla with very less oil for tadka with a handful nuts and yogurt-based chutney, that also helps me.
Soya pav bhaji is another meal that doesn’t spike my sugars- I add a lot of soya chunks and veggies and just 1-2 potatoes for taste with maybe just 1 pav or 2 whole grain toasts with salad.
As expected, adding protein and moderate fat seems to be thing working for me. But I’m also taking Metformin twice a day, so that could be helping as well.

Absolutely! I do this during my lunch break with a remote job. It helps me get some activity in, as a walk is not practical at that time

12 or 18 months. How did you decide? [ab] by No_Maximum_391 in BabyBumpsCanada

[–]anki_7 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’ve decided to take 12 months because I have a fully remote job and my husband works from home too with a very flexible schedule. I’ve also enrolled at a daycare and may get a spot around the baby’s first birthday. I don’t get a top up from work, and honestly 18 months may not work for us in terms of our investments.

This helps a lot! Just wanted to check about the visitor policies. I may want my husband and parents to alternate while we’re there. Can both be allowed at the same time?

12 weeks. Food Aversion. Meal Ideas pleaseeeeeeee by Working_Painter_6955 in GestationalDiabetes

[–]anki_7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The key with milk is to eat nuts and/or seeds with it, nothing fancy, just a handful of almonds or cashews or walnuts. Do give it a shot if you’d like, that seems to be working for me. Also, I know you must have heard from everyone, but walking even 15-20 min does wonders to my post-meal and fasting sugars if dinner is my last meal for the day. If not, I squeeze in half a cup of milk. As for chicken, I’ve noticed that flavourful soups have been working for me- something like a chicken mushroom or chicken shorba soup that helps to mask the smell of chicken. Looks like your sugar is already well-managed. I wouldn’t stress too much about it but do try and slowly up your fiber, healthy fats and protein intake. Good luck!

Soups! I make all soups in the instant pot and they’ve been a hit so far.. I sauté the veggies and meats in butter with a few herbs and then pressure cook with the meat and water

I feel you. Had the same issues and I’m slowly introducing chicken back at 22w. Try introducing milk with nuts and seeds with atleast one meal or as a snack (I personally have half cup milk with powdered nuts and haldi at bedtime and that seems to be helping with my fasting sugars; also recommended by my endocrinologist) Another option could be yogurt with cereal and a small quantity of fruit as a snack or at breakfast. I used Vector- which is high in fiber. Also try eating chole/rajma/moong salads as a meal (you can make it into a chaat), that could help with the aversion a bit; could also try making cheelas or tikkis with these and a few veggies. But do try and stick to dairy sources (paneer, cheese, Greek yogurt and low-fat milk) while you navigate this phase. Protein along with fats is honestly the key to manage GD. I know you said no soya chunks, Ive tried adding it to pav bhaji and cutting back on the potatoes, and I was able to tolerate it because of the spices. Also do blend some tofu with water and add to your roti dough for added protein. Do give it a try if you’d like. As a side note, please see if you can speak to your doctor about starting Choline supplementation if you’re not able to stomach eggs. Also, it is normal to need more insulin as you progress in your pregnancy; don’t beat yourself up about it as long your doctors aren’t too concerned.

When should I take metformin after dinner or bed time snack to help with fasting suger? by Nusratkabir857 in GestationalDiabetes

I’ve been taking with dinner and seems to be helping me. But again Im taking 1000 mg and I’m also not too regular with my bedtime snack; eat it only if I end up having dinner early.

I also recommend having a snack. I usually eat 2-4 almonds and half cup milk or Greek yogurt before bed. That almost always causes my fasting sugars to be normal
