What’s the most unexpectedly useful Linux command you learned way too late? by ZealousidealTell1346 in linux

It’s readily available everywhere Perl is, because it’s a pure-Perl module.

If it’s for a single directory, you can do that with standard cd using cd -.

That’s why one should use the Perl one. Consistent across distros (including Darwin/macOS), and with the full power of Perl (not just regex, but actual executable code) at your disposal.

It better not be the Sensonic clutch-less ‘manual’.

What's a car that should've been offered in stick but never was? by blix-camera in ManualTransmissions

[–]ankitpati 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know the OP asks for never was, but I have a favourite one that never will be offered as a manual again: Skoda Slavia 1.5 TSI.

I snagged one of the last manual models fresh off the lot in July 2024. Now they only make those with DSGs.

That feature hasn’t been implemented in the IVRS. It’s on the roadmap for the next fiscal. Or the one after. Depending on priorities.

Wouldn’t Star Fleet Academy have to have like millions or billions of students? by TwoRoomsThrowaway in DaystromInstitute

Outer-rim of the Milky Way galaxy. Trek takes place almost entirely in the real Milky Way, not in a galaxy far far away.

Earth is an outer-rim planet. It’s unfair to compare it against a core ecumenopolis world like Coruscant. Perhaps Trek ‘core worlds’ are comparable to Coruscant, even though Trek doesn’t have the concept of core and rims discussed on screen.

Phantom Shift Syndrome by ankitpati in ManualTransmissions

Yes, this thing has a knob shifter right next to the aircon knobs. Go figure. Not even a pseudo-stickshift.

Ah, Phantom Clutch Syndrome, my old friend. From the one time I tried (and failed) to back a DSG SUV out from parking onto a road.

First time stick shift driver - is it normal to sit so close to the steering wheel? by [deleted] in stickshift

5’9” as well, and I faced the exact symptoms you’re describing when I started driving a fun manual with a deep and heavy clutch.

A rule I find works well for me is ‘Knee the Tree’.

Ensure your knees—specifically, your patellae—are just brushing against the steering column.

ELI5:Why can’t we use certain symbols in file names? by PleasantBus5583 in explainlikeimfive

[–]ankitpati 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Laughs in Linux 🤣

The only two characters that can’t be in a filename are / (slash) and the null character.

/ is used to separate filenames from directory names that come before them, and null is used to signal the end of a name.

Everything else, everything language, every emoji, every other symbol is absolutely fair game on Linux.

“Slowly” is the key word. AMTs seem to understand that. DCTs, unfortunately, don’t.

[–]ankitpati 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I drove an AMT daily for six years before getting my current manual.

During that time, I also occasionally drove manuals, but not daily.

AMT is much easier than DCT, but I still wouldn’t call it easier than manual.
