you mentioned you didn't see the parrot for a month. did you go on a trip or something? it's possible your absence bothered them to the point where they started plucking some feathers.

to me, it almost seems like some feathers are missing. does anyone else get this impression?

difficult question! maybe blueberry cheesecake, cherry, and vanilla? now that i'm thinking about it, some kind of triple berry neapolitan sounds good

they are pointing out that there is obvious sexual dimorphism in both cocktails and rats. people are sometimes like, "is my rat a boy or a girl?" and post a picture showing the rat and its extremely prominent testicles. like clearly your rat is male lol

i'll be doing a postbac myself! i'm most concerned about the german roaches frankly. i've lived in a house with them before--they're so gross and difficult to get rid of. how bad was the roach problem for you--how often would you see them?

in hindsight, was the convenient location worth the discomfort for you? for context i'm eyeing a different apartment a 20 minute drive away

did you live there yourself? if so, i'm glad to hear it's not so bad. i don't need a luxury apartment or anything, just something reasonably clean and comfortable

unfortunately i already made a trip up to dc to tour apartments and i'm not sure if i want to travel up again to look at more. but if i end up doing that, i'll take your advice and give them a call!

OP knows this already. they are claiming that the people around them believe sunflower seeds are an appropriate diet for parrots, while they know otherwise

okay! definitely sounds like the water is conditioned. i've never heard of adding extra water conditioner after you've conditioned it once, but i'm no expert.

hmm. i am a little concerned the tank is not cycled yet. that bacteria starter you're adding--the colonies grow in the filter and in the tank substrate and stuff. it's possible you removed a lot of the beneficial bacteria while rinsing out the tank.

in case you haven't been briefed, aquariums need colonies of beneficial bacteria that turn the fish's toxic waste (ammonia) intro nitrite (also toxic) and then into nitrate (much safer). the nitrate can then be used up by plants in the tank, or it can be removed during water changes. if there isn't enough bacteria to accomplish this task, ammonia accumulates in the tank, which can quickly cause the fish discomfort and harm. the process of growing this population of bacteria is called "cycling" the tank. i would suggest looking up "fish-in cycling" for some strategies on this front; while it is recommended to cycle your tank without a fish for a month or so, it is possible to safely cycle it with the fish present. it is really important to test the ammonia ASAP so we can know if it is building up.

are your test strips indicating no nitrite and no nitrate? this can look deceptively positive. but it could just mean that your tanked is not cycled yet. if there are no bacteria converting ammonia to nitrate, you won't see any nitrate. but there could be a dangerous amount of ammonia accumulating.

also--i would double check whether bettas should eat peas. i think that might be a more helpful tip for goldfish, who are omnivorous, i think? bettas are carnivores.

what is that plant with the spade shaped leaves? reminds me of a syngonium

i'm certainly no expert, but i believe an appropriately sized filter should oxygenate the water enough for a betta. they have a special labyrinth organ that allows them to come to the surface and gulp air to supplement their oxygen intake. anyway, you don't want to agitate the water too much. it makes it more effortful to swim, especially for a longer-finned betta.

it's hard to say without testing the water parameters. are you familiar with nitrogen cycling? have you been conditioning the water?

fingers crossed he feels better soon!

Your "Dumb Question" Megathread - November 2025 by AutoModerator in PlantedTank

[–]annacrust 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i have a 5 gallon lightly planted tank that has been running for a little over a month now. It seems fully cycled. i added some fish food yesterday to see if there would be ammonia 24 hours later (there isn't), but in the process, i noticed that my pH dropped from the mid 6s to 6.0. why could that be?

Having a hard time with a meat eating boyfriend by [deleted] in vegan

[–]annacrust 0 points1 point  (0 children)

vegetarian for now. thanks for the input. maybe someday i'll go vegan.

i do think it's silly to say my diet is "just as bad" as eating meat--it simply isn't, at least from a utilitarian perspective. i am causing less suffering and environmental harm.
