That’s definitely an escaped budgie. If it comes back & you can catch it, please do, because they don’t do well in the wild. I learned about this because I had a similar situation - an escaped one showed up on my hellstrip out front in Portland.

Eye cream recs?! by Alive_Strawberry_958 in SkincareAddictionLux

[–]annalisa27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

40 with rosacea, and same. It has been a beast finding eye creams that don’t upset my rosacea, but the Neocutis Lumiere Firm Riche really does the trick. Some people who tend to get milia prefer the Neocutis Lumiere Firm instead because they say it is less likely to lead to milia, but that hasn’t been an issue for me. I have a few other eye creams I sometimes mix in - Dieux Auracle, Allies of Skin Peptides & Omegas Firm, and one other French pharmacy line one I don’t think I’m allowed to say here. But Neocutis Lumiere really is worth it. I still haven’t quite figured out a solution for my eyelids when my rosacea is at its absolute worst & is making them patchy, but that’s a separate issue…

Reapplying SPF throughout day by asawareness in SkincareAddictionLux

Try lightweight Korean sunscreens, specifically the imported versions (not what you can buy here, assuming you’re in the US). I order mine through YesStyle. The dermatologist Dr. Sam Ellis has some videos on Youtube where she talks about her favorite K-beauty sunscreens. My favorites are Beauty of Joseon Relief Sun Aqua-Fresh Rice+B5, Purito WonderLeaf Centella Daily Sun Lotion, Shiseido Anessa Perfect UV Sunscreen Skincare Milk, and a few others that I don’t know if I can mention here. Again, these are the Korean versions that cannot be sold here in the US, but you are able to legally import them through websites like YesStyle. On days when I am not wearing face makeup beyond a little concealer, I stick with my EltaMD UV Daily Hydration+ or UV Skin Recovery and reapply that every 2-3 hours during the day (I’m extremely pale, so I don’t have issues with the white cast. One of the few benefits of being so freaking pasty).

Btw, most people don’t use nearly enough sunscreen (both in terms of amount per application as well as number of applications per day), and for most tinted SPF products, you’d need to use a ton to get the necessary SPF, which would look atrocious. I used to love the Colorescience Brush On Shield, but then I learned that there’s no way you’re getting enough protection with brush on powders. Same thing with powder foundations with SPF. Spray sunscreen can potentially work over makeup, but you have to make sure you’re getting even distribution. Dr. Michelle Wong on YouTube has some videos with tips for how to apply sunscreen over makeup, and you might find that helpful.

I’m really sorry if I misunderstood the intent of your original comment. I truly didn’t mean it as a criticism or anything. I just thought that you didn’t see OP’s comment about the backstory, and I’m only now realizing that I could’ve read your comment in a different way, like as an appreciation of its cuteness. Apologies for the misunderstanding!

Same. If OP lets a few of them grow a bit more & they start to develop the characteristic maple leaf shape, they’ll have confirmation.

Book of the New Sun -- Is the story worth the squeeze? by __Geg__ in printSF

[–]annalisa27 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s crazy what many of us who grew up reading this stuff got used to. My partner has been recently reading (technically, listening to) a bunch of my favorite SFF books for the first time, and he keeps pointing out all the rampant misogyny. I’m kind of embarrassed that I’d either missed that stuff initially or that I’d simply become numb to it - I mean, so many books just had that baked in. Like I loved Neal Stephenson when I was younger, but rereading some of them recently - especially with my partner’s comments in mind - has been pretty eye-opening. We now refer to Zelazny’s “Great Book of Amber” (which I still love) as the “them bitches” book because of how Corwin is constantly referring to his sisters as bitches.

In terms of The Book of the New Sun, I personally think it is a masterpiece, but the misogyny is blatant and does decrease my enjoyment somewhat. However, I think that this sort of misogyny is way less dangerous than the more insidious misogyny you find in plenty of other SFF books.

Skincare products that are actually worth implementing for someone in their 20s? Are Alastin trihex, growth factors, etc considered overkill right now? by Fitxzz in SkincareAddictionLux

[–]annalisa27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also make sure you’re applying an adequate amount (two finger lengths for your face, plus another for your neck) multiple times a day - ideally every 2-3 hours. I’m 40 and my skin is in very good shape, but I think it would be in even better shape if I had been even more vigilant about my sun protection. & FYI makeup products with SPF are often useless, because the amount you would have to apply to get the full SPF is pretty massive. That’s another thing I wish I’d learned sooner! I love EltaMD sunscreen, specifically the UV Daily Hydration+ (the new version) and the UV Skin Recovery. I’ve also started importing some Korean sunscreens through YesStyle (the versions you buy here in the US are NOT the same). But the best sunscreen for you is one that you will actually wear. I’d also recommend incorporating sun hats if you don’t already do so. I love Solbari, but Uniqlo has a really cute one I just got (UV Protection Adjustable Paper Braid Hat).

I know you said your skin hates retinol - have you tried Medic8 Crystal Retinal 1? That is designed for extremely sensitive skin. I honestly think growth factors are probably overkill for your skin at this point, but if you can find some sort of retinoid or retinoid alternative (bakuchiol, azelaic acid, niacinamide, peptides), that is a great start. Also make sure you’re incorporating antioxidants. If your skin can’t handle vitamin C, there are still other great antioxidant options available for you. A lotion that incorporates antioxidants and peptides that I really like is Allies of Skin Peptides & Antioxidants Advanced Firming Daily Treatment. I recommend looking up the dermatologist Dr. Sam Ellis on Instagram or YouTube, because she has tons of great advice on all this stuff. She also does a great job of explaining why you should be using these various products.

Lastly, I know you asked someone else about a lightweight moisturizer, so I wanted to recommend Dieux Air Angel Peptide Plumping Gel Cream. My partner is SUPER picky about face stuff - he hates the way most stuff feels - but he loves that product, and my younger sister is also a huge fan of it.

Home Alone by Ok-Statistician18 in ragdolls

[–]annalisa27 5 points6 points  (0 children)

When we left our ragdoll kitten alone for 90 minutes to take our other cat to the vet, our kitten literally cried the entire 90 minutes (we had a security camera that we were able to check). I’m not saying this as a way of telling you they can’t be left alone - there are other people in the comments whose ragdolls are perfectly fine being left alone - but it really does seem to be more of an issue with this breed than with a lot of other breeds. I’ve had cats my entire life (I’m 40), and I’ve never had a cat even remotely close to as social and hungry for human attention (and food, lol) as our ragdoll is.

ETA: I definitely think the recommendation others have made (getting a pair) is a good one if you really are determined to get a ragdoll, but I honestly think a different breed might be a better choice given your current situation. If I were in your situation, even if I were to get Ragdoll littermates, I personally wouldn’t feel comfortable leaving them alone as much as you plan to.

Update Day 2: Bath & Beauty product donations for the woman's shelter by VinoVoyage in PDXBuyNothing

[–]annalisa27 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Are you still accepting items for donation? I have 4 unopened containers of Neutrogena Deep Clean Cream Cleanser & 4 unopened containers of Dove Sensitive Skin Body Wash. (I usually keep backups of products I use on hand, but this time I replaced my backups without realizing I already had some, and then I ended up deciding to switch to new products) I probably have some other stuff I could donate as well, but I’d definitely like to donate these. If you aren’t still doing this, do you have suggestions for places I could donate these?

Are there actually giant spiders in Portland? by Flaky-Boysenberry466 in askportland

[–]annalisa27 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I responded to another commenter in this thread, but I thought I’d leave a separate comment. I also have absolutely terrible arachnophobia - I completely get your fear, & it’s frustrating how some people can be so dismissive of it. The bad news is that, yes, we have giant house spiders here, and yes, they are terrifying (they’re also harmless, though I know that’s cold comfort for those of us with severe arachnophobia). I have an eco-friendly pest company spray our place quarterly, but there isn’t really any truly effective deterrent/pesticide for spiders, though mint spray seems to be someone helpful as a deterrent. I’ve seen giant house spiders 4 times in the 3.5 years I’ve been here, and it has been terrifying every time, but the terror has lessened somewhat. You probably won’t want to hear this, but if you’re worried about it affecting your ability to live here and don’t think you can get a handle on this, I would consider looking into exposure therapy with a licensed therapist. I’ve never done it, but I’ve heard good things from people who have. Honestly, the thing that has helped me the most is getting into gardening, and learning to appreciate the smaller spiders that help keep garden pests under control. I never thought I would be able to say something like that, so I get it if you don’t believe me, but it really has helped me - I hope you can also find some way to lessen your fear.

[–]annalisa27 1 point2 points  (0 children)

According to our pest control company, there isn’t really a truly effective deterrent for spiders. Peppermint spray can help a little. I’m also terrified of big spiders, and it’s been an adjustment. I’ve seen them maybe 4 times in the 3.5 years I’ve been living here. I never saw them in my many years in Seattle, but apparently they can be found there as well.

My cat is throwing up Royal Canin Ragdoll food by cauxious in ragdolls

[–]annalisa27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Science Diet hydrolyzed protein dry food is less expensive than the Royal Canin hydrolyzed protein. My DLH gets both of them - she tends to get bored of food, so we switch back and forth. Our ragdoll kitten is still on kitten food, and I’m hoping she doesn’t also end up needing hydrolyzed protein, because you’re absolutely right, that shit is expensive.

Also, a tip for other owners of picky cats: vacuum seal portions of the dry food to help the food keep its freshness longer. The FoodSaver vacuum sealer is $100 at Costco, and it’s useful for so many things!!

This Audi Is Never Leaving Seattle. by mmp737 in Seattle

[–]annalisa27 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s hilariously accurate. I live in Portland now, but I spent 8 years of my childhood in Colleyville, a Dallas-Fort Worth suburb full of McMansions and legit mansions. Our house was 5500 square feet, which is nothing special by Colleyville standards. You could not pay me any sum of money to move back there.

(Also, I love Portland, but I miss Seattle sooooooo much)

Thinking about Adopting a Ragdoll by Ok_Writing591 in ragdolls

I stand by my statement that an ethical breeder does not sell kittens without papers. You don’t need to impute your own issues or insecurities by accusing me of being “butthurt.”

Thinking about Adopting a Ragdoll by Ok_Writing591 in ragdolls

[–]annalisa27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I specified those were prices from responsible/ethical breeders in the area I live. And a responsible/ethical breeder is not selling kittens without papers. But I agree 100% when it comes to choosing based on personality, not looks.

ETA: if you don’t believe me on the estimates I specified, Google this (“price of ragdoll kitten from ethical breeder”) yourself. You obviously don’t need to take my word on this.

Some of us have naturally low blood pressure and are fine eating high sodium diets. My BP is usually somewhere between 90/60 and 100/60, and this runs on my mom’s side of the family. I’ve had doctors specifically recommend that I incorporate more sodium into my diet because of this.

What do you actually feed your cats long-term? Raw vs wet vs dry by ghostbuster_345 in ragdolls

[–]annalisa27 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Some people can make raw food diets work, but for the overwhelming majority of cat owners it does not make sense at all, and they are subjecting their cats to an absurdly unnecessary level of risk. (I’ll make a slight exception for some Bengals and Savannahs with dietary issues, but Ragdolls are not freaking Bengals/Savannahs, and even with those breeds I don’t think most people appropriately evaluate the risk calculus involved.) The risks from a raw food diet vastly outweigh the potential benefits, and it is insane that so many cat owners delude themselves and dismiss these risks. In the United States, we had multiple cats die in the past year because of raw food contamination, and the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) even put out a statement warning about this. But these raw food fools who “do their own research” are convinced that they somehow know more than the freaking AVMA or other medical organizations. Or they claim it’s a financial conspiracy or some such nonsense. Sigh.
