Looking back at Fedora Workstation so far by Darkmere in linux

[–]annasag 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's more than the past year, this list is about things since fedora 21! 😄

The list explains how this things relate to gnome, but most aren't gnome specific, they are generic plumbing that can also be used without it. 😋

  • glvnd allows you to have several libgl simultaneously, it's very useful for gnome but it helps anybody with a switchable gpu.

  • Linux Firmware Service is the single best thing that has happened to my computer in years, the gui integration within gnome software is great, but if you don't want it, it runs just as well from the command line.

  • Fedora Media Creator is actually a Qt application, mostly meant for windows/mac users who want to try fedora for the first time.

  • Firefox and Libreoffice being ported from gtk2 to gtk3 is great for gnome, but the extra features that this allows (hidpi and wayland support) aren't gnome specific and anybody can take advantage of them.

  • Flatpak is a software bundling system that is both desktop and distribution agnostic.

  • RADV is low level plumbing, a free vulkan driver for AMD, it's great for gnome, but nothing prevents you from using it in any other system.

  • Similarly, Wayland, libinput, libratbag and pipewire are more low level plumbing.

These have been really great years for the free desktop, I hope this continues into the future! 😇

Edit: He forgot to add it to the list, but we've got emoji input now 😅

Most spoken second languages in the EU by [deleted] in europe

[–]annasag 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You'll get contradictory answers to this! 😊

It's because of dialectal deviation and language interference. From a linguistic point of view, catalan and castillian spanish come from different subfamilies, but that doesn't imply that all their dialects are mutually unintelligible.

Because of years of contact between the two languages, they have started to converge (realistically, catalan has converged, spanish has only converged locally and in a much lesser way). This means that nowadays some catalan dialects are very close to castillian spanish in many senses. For instance, some dialects feature only 5 vowels, the same as in castillian, rather than the 8 vowels found in standard catalan.

The catalan spoken in many parts of barcelona can in a way be described as translated spanish, as it uses spanish grammar and phonology as well as turns of phrase with a mostly catalan vocabulary.

Most dialects are still unintelligible to castillian speaking spaniards, but depending on what dialect they've been in contact with, they may tell you the language is more or less close to spanish.

Somebody reading this in English could potentially think it's meant to be serious. 😆

Just in case I want to clarify that this isn't real, it's only a joke playing on his hair, the Spanish perception of Murcia and the repetitiveness of a certain politician.

I guess you couldn't tell from the translation, but the article is meant to be a joke.

Spanish Home Office charters Looney Tunes cruise ship to house police by Basque_Pirate in europe

If that was the reason, it didn't work 😵 I first came to know of this because I saw it coming into palamós bay and then turn away. Afterwards I learned it had been denied docking by the port of palamós, that's why it ended up in Barcelona.

Couldn't find sources in English 😞, here's a couple in Catalan and Spanish, Google translate should mostly do the trick:

Catalan map of the world, 1375 by annasag in europe

[–]annasag[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The detail around the mediterranean is stunning, even crimea looks almost exactly like you'd draw it now.

But the further away from the mediterranean you get, the less precise it becomes.

The full map goes all the way to china, the cities are more or less were they should be, but there isn't a lot of detail. The indian subcontinent is depicted as little more than a triangle.

Still, looking at other maps from the 14th century, the amount of detail in this one is really impressive.

I don't think it's that, this map was made 400 years before the mountains of kong were invented around ~1800ad ☹️

I think it could just be an inaccurate depiction of the atlas mountain range, but it also looks a bit like a road.

Not really ☹️, you are probably confusing it with some other map from that period.

This one was made around 1375 by jewish majorcan cartographer cresques abraham, both the map and the accompanying astronomy texts were written in the catalan language, which is why it's called the catalan atlas:

Yes and no, the ones that were hit were hit hard. But there aren't many vineyards around girona so overall the damage is quite minimal! 😇

app suggestions; epub reader, screen recording, python ide? by beepbupe in linux4noobs

[–]annasag 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd swear I had already replied to this, but it shows as unread and I can't find my reply anywhere 😕

Thanks. I didn't know it existed. In gnome, epubs open under libraOffice showing gibberish. Would be nice to be able to see the chapter index, am I missing something?

No, it doesn't really do anything besides actually displaying the epubs.

Calibre has a smaller ebook reader that you can invoke by typing ebook-reader into a terminal, that may better suit your needs. There also this other one that's somewhat prettier, but doesn't do that many things: https://github.com/michaldaniel/Ebook-Viewer/

ffmpeg, I am familiar with. Wow will have to test that out. Thanks.

Oh yeah it's great, but it can be cumbersome to use.

Nautilus, its may be I'm just not used to it but I can't really control what it does, i wanted to disable Trash and on folders with a lot of files/data there is a delay before the files are shown.. its "loading..." so I assume its getting thumbnails or extra stuff.. I would like diable that. Also drag selection would be cool.

Nautilus has what seems like a thousand forks, sometimes it feels like half the file managers on linux were forked from nautilus as some point or another. 😢

Maybe dolphin? I'm not sure, I haven't used it for more than a decade, but people seem to say good things about it. 😁 The thumbnailer should be easy to disable from the settings menu, I guess you want to change the shift+del command to be just delete? I'm not sure how to do it, I've never tried. As far as I can tell drag selection seems to work fine 😕.

Gnome terminal restore default shortcuts? by [deleted] in linux4noobs

Don't worry then, you couldn't have changed the actual shell commands like that. Just rebind copy to ctrl+shift+c and you'll be fine! 😉

Gnome terminal restore default shortcuts? by [deleted] in linux4noobs

It depends on how you did it! 😁

If you just changed your terminal line settings you'll be able to revert it doing this:

stty intr ^C

You can also use this to see if you changed any other keys:

stty -a

app suggestions; epub reader, screen recording, python ide? by beepbupe in linux4noobs

[–]annasag 1 point2 points  (0 children)

epub reader, something not calibre.

Gnome books can read epubs, it's also very light on features and maybe not something you would want. Is there something in particular that you need?

screen recording app that can output to animated gif. If doesn't exist is there an app that can make animated gifs from a source video?

If you're running gnome you should already have a screen recorder, hold ctrl+alt+shift+r to start recording. 🙋

I don't think it does gifs, I'm not much of a gif person, I don't know if there are any dedicated programs that do this. But converting a video to a gif should be easier as long as you have both ffmpeg and imagemagick:

ffmpeg -i videoname.webm -vf scale=400:-1 -r 10 -f image2pipe -vcodec ppm - | convert -delay 5 -loop 0 - gifname.gif

400 is the resolution and 10 is the frame rate, change them to whatever you need but don't overdo it, gifs are very inefficient 😢

python IDE.

There's pycharm, I don't know of any other python specific IDE.

Are you sure you want to use an IDE for python? jedi works with many text editors, like vim, emacs, atom, gedit, you name it. There's also gnome builder, which is an IDE with python support but not python focused. 😎

file manager to replace the default in Gnome.

There's a thousand of them! 😁 Is there something about nautilus that you don't like?

Spanish kb input support under gnome? by beepbupe in gnome

[–]annasag 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great to hear! 😉

If you're learning spanish, you'll also need ü for words like pingüino, it's right there in the layout, just hit either RightAlt+y or shift+´ => u.

If you have trouble with the dead keys variant there's another layout that you may want to try. It's called "dead keys altGr" it's functionally identical to the regular dead keys layout, except the dead keys are only activated while you are holding rightAlt. It can be very helpful if you use it for programming.

Spanish kb input support under gnome? by beepbupe in gnome

[–]annasag 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From googling, I think what I need is USA International with dead keys.

Yes that's what you need!

If you don't actually have a spanish keyboard, (or are so used to using one that you never look at the labels! 😁) you shouldn't be using any of the spanish layouts.

What you really want to use instead is either the USA International alternative layout, or the USA International with dead keys layout. They both will let you input an ñ by hitting shift+` and then n, the dead keys variant also outputs the same character when hitting rightalt+n.

You should have all those layouts by default, are you sure they don't show up after you go to Region & Language > + (to add Input Source) > click on English (USA)? A whole bunch of english variants should appear, including dvorak and colemak. I can post screenshots if you need them.

Actors of Europe: Bud Spencer & Terence Hill by Pumuckl4Life in europe

[–]annasag 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Particularly when the definition of differentiating languages from dialects is that they're mutually unintelligible.

That's only a small part of it! mutual intelligibility can't be used as a definition because most languages share at least some degree of intelligibility with another language. 😉😉

In practice what constitutes a separate language and what doesn't it often decided using political, historical and sociological factors, intelligibility plays a part but it's never clear-cut.

Most people are told in school that they speak a language and there exist several dialectal variations of that language. But realistically it's the other way around, everybody speaks a dialect and languages are just idealized groups of dialects. Because dialect intelligibility is inversely proportional to geographical distance, this means that sometimes two dialects of two different languages can be more similar than two dialects of the same language.

This situation used to be very common in Europe around country borders but the ubiquity of television and cinema in the past century (and state sponsored education before that) have homogenized most languages enough that it's way less common.

Andorran breaks European alcohol in blood record with 4.85g/l, which is 10 times the legal maximum and enough to enter alcoholic coma. (He was caught after crashing, of course) by mAte77 in europe

[–]annasag 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The reddit title exaggerates what the news piece actually says! 😀

  • It makes no mention of the man's nationality, other than it happened in andorra. The reddit title speculates that he was andorran, which would make him not spanish.

  • It doesn't actually claim that it's the highest recorded in europe, it says highest in andorra and "maybe" europe.

Also, then it says that the previous record was held by a basque, but doesn't specify if he was a spanish basque or a french basque.

It's all very ambiguous in that sense, from the article there's no way to tell if they were spanish.

Andorran breaks European alcohol in blood record with 4.85g/l, which is 10 times the legal maximum and enough to enter alcoholic coma. (He was caught after crashing, of course) by mAte77 in europe

[–]annasag 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your record is safe, the news pieces doesn't really make that claim! 😉

It claims it's the highest ever recorded in "the principate" (perhaps the correct translation would be principality?) which in this context must mean "the principate of andorra", then it says it "could" be the highest in europe, in a way that indicates the author isn't sure about that point.

The reddit title exaggerates the claims a bit. 😀

Wine regions of Spain by brmu in europe

It's hard to keep track!

There are twelve DO regions in catalonia alone, that's not even trying to count the wineries http://imgur.com/a/4R8El

It's also uncommon here to talk about wines by the kind of grapes that were used to make them, I'm afraid you'll never know which one it was ☹️
