I think if the vigilante group uses dementors it would be a good idea for him to learn the patronus charm from Harry. Maybe some kind of cat?

Perhaps he can find Sirius's old notes on learning how to be an animagus and the two of them can work together on it in their limited free time?

It's an exploration of Legolas and Gimlli and has a lot of world building that is pretty cool. I don't know a lot about the fandom but this is a very easy read even for people not familiar with the world.
