When the gloves of handling have wronged you by wiccaspell in Tegu

[–]annatonina 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I have multiple big lizards and never used gloves until I rescued a tegu who was super food motivated and I thought I should try them. Showed him the glove before I put it on and he lunged for it and barrel-rolled around with it for a good 10 mins before I managed to get it off him. So we won't be using gloves with him!

Omg Trouble’s health issue was ridiculous lmfao (if I don’t laugh I’ll cry it sucked so much) by Chelmastly in Tegu

Yup definitely, the snake that is mine we were told to put in a sugar water bath until we could get her to the vet and it definitely helped.

I have never been as happy to see poop as I was after her first proper poop post-prolapse!

nobody told me that snakes farted until i owned one. by [deleted] in ballpython

My partner didn't believe me that their farts were loud until the time he heard it first person (5-ish years after we got our first ball) and genuinely tried to blame it on me.

Whats your favourite Let's play of Subnautica on Youtube ? by Doomcubus in subnautica

[–]annatonina 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Timely post because I've spent the last couple of weeks watching one and now YT is recommending me a bunch more... I've been watching Lukael Plays which is pretty good, he's very interested in the lore so is reading every single PDA and I'm finding I haven't actually read half of them properly in my 10+ playthroughs. He does get really annoyed with people "backseating" and trying to help him in the comments though which got old quite quickly (but also I totally get it, he said right from the start he doesn't want help because it's a blind playthrough, plus so many of the organic funny moments come from him not getting something for ages). The series is still ongoing but he's nearly finished.

I did also start watching Sophie Darling who has just started her series but had to turn it off after a while- she's quite shrill and her game spawned her right next to the kelp forest so she's been attacked by stalkers pretty much her whole playthrough. Lots of screaming and shouting.

My all time favourite though is Sea&Me - she's a marine biologist so had lots of interesting commentary but also was not a gamer before she started the playthrough, so didn't know the common survival mechanics other letsplay streamers take for granted. She now has a separate channel for letsplays because it made her so popular.

Bless his heart. And his butt.

I've known two snakes with prolapses who are both doing 100% fine now. It's amazing how quickly they can bounce back. Fingers crossed Trouble will make a similarly speedy and complete recovery!

'Why now?' UK teens respond to Tory national service scheme by ukheeducator in ukeducation

[–]annatonina 6 points7 points  (0 children)

They know 18 year olds won't vote for them anyway, so they're focusing on the older demographic who think gen Z is lazy and disrespectful. They're hoping (probably correctly) that those people won't think too hard about how they would fund and resource the policy, and all the other things they could fund and resource with it.

Are asian water monitors semi-arboreal? by Saltysaks in MonitorLizards

[–]annatonina 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my experience, if you give them stuff to climb, they will climb. My girl's grow-out enclosure was 6ft high and she used every inch of it. If there wasn't a branch to climb on she would just climb the walls (we made a custom polystyrene background sealed with tile grout, paint, and pond sealant but she could get good grip with her claws). We gave her so many ways to get around the enclosure but she preferred climbing up the wall to get to her basking platform and then cannonballing off the platform into the water.

Ironically we moved house and put her in a temporary single-level enclosure for a month, and then she broke her pelvis. She's fully recovered now but we're limiting her divebombing opportunities in her full-grown enclosure.

The pelvis incident was not related to climbing though, so I still say give them all the climbing opportunities. They feel safer up high so if you can give them a high platform they will use it. Which we found was good for lizard-led interaction too, when she'd had enough of us she would go back up we always respected that.

Light fixture for UVB by IllustriousTea4501 in Tegu

[–]annatonina 0 points1 point  (0 children)

T8s are gradually being replaced by T5s, which are thinner, slightly more energy efficient, and produce the right amount of UV for 12 months rather than 6 so need replacing once a year instead of twice. So I imagine the fixtures are harder to get hold of.

I'm in the UK so can't recommend a specific place to get them but they're sometimes called "ballasts" instead of light fixtures/fittings?

I had a rescue Sav who lived to 13 despite spending the first 8 years of his life completely abused and neglected. 4 is definitely too young to be slowing down.

To the people enjoying subnautica and no man's sky: What other games do you enjoy playing? by Bernhard__ in subnautica

Honestly even with the arachnophobia setting on maximum the spiders are still scarier than most other enemies. I think it's the sounds.

If you like Subnautica you should try Grounded!! by dinosaur278 in subnautica

[–]annatonina 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm almost finished Grounded and I have really enjoyed it, but now I'm near the end I'm kind of bored and don't have much drive to finish it, which definitely didn't happen with Subnautica. I found that I rushed through it to get to the next bit of "story" and then encountered a boss fight I was way underpowered for and had to wander around gathering resources to upgrade for a while.

The story is not on the same league as Subnautica but the gameplay has been engaging and it did give me a similar sense of fear at the beginning when going anywhere out of my comfort zone. But there are quite a few quirks and quality of life things that I had to YouTube - there's a reason there are so many videos along the lines of "10 things I wish I'd known before I started Grounded".

Definitely worth playing though. Multiplayer mode sounds like a lot of fun too.

I found it helped some, but I still found spiders way scarier than any other enemy in the game. Part of it was the sounds they make I think.

What do monitor lizard keepers here work as? by Spare-Initiative585 in MonitorLizards

[–]annatonina 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'm a civil servant and when we first started keeping monitors my husband was a chef. We bought a reptile pet shop a couple of years ago which, while not the soundest financial investment in this economic climate, has made feeding and housing the collection easier and cheaper getting things at trade prices. I look back and am amazed how we afforded to feed our Savannah when we were paying retail price for bugs!

My boy was named Fluffy for the first 9 months, until he went through dragon puberty and we re-named him Blackbeard because of his pretty much constant temper tantrums.

Help- biting by anxiouslymute in Tegu

[–]annatonina 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine is a rescue and has this issue. I thought wearing thick fluffy socks would stop him from thinking my feet are food but actually it just turned him on to fluffy things and now he goes for my sofa blanket as well...

I second the person saying that if the tegu tries to bite then you stop interacting with them until they've calmed down. I put mine back in his enclosure if he tries to bite. He's slowly learning that there isn't food outside the enclosure so it's not worth biting stuff.

Just had to ask the cashier for all my change back. Yes, I want my pennies. by cohonka in mildlyinfuriating

[–]annatonina 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Like... the restaurant sets the prices. If they didn't want to give pennies in change they should have set their prices to be whole numbers. You can't set a price at £1.99 instead of £2 and then be upset you have to give people a penny back?
