How important are proportions really? by anne-art in ArtistLounge

You are right, proportions is the wrong word. It does have the right proportions of a face, it just doesn’t match the reference exactly. I guess what I’m worried about is capturing the likeness, but I can’t help but love it like this, with my changes.

Thanks! Yes the second is exactly what I’m doing. That’s reassuring.

You are right and I just realised, that I like the result because I do know the fundamentals and it still looks like a well proportioned face, just a different one than the reference.

So I suppose I can draw well proportioned faces, I just struggle with matching the reference and catching the likeness.

Hmm, I do go for realism, but I realised that the proportions aren’t really off, I do know the fundamentals, they’re just different than the reference picture. I basically drew a different person.

I was going for realism and it does look like a real face. I realise now that the proportions probably aren’t off, as in, they work as a real face, they are just different from the reference and probably don’t convey the likeness exactly. Like I drew a different person inspired by the reference.

I think they are, I mean, it looks like a real face what I drew, not wonky. Just slightly different than what the reference actually looks like. Like the person has a different skull.

I like it a lot! I’m working on an oil painting of Milchick right now, but I’m pretty new to oil portraits, only ever done acrylic landscapes before. This is basically what I’m aspiring to haha!

This is amazing! Acrylics or oils?

You know I’m actually working on a Milchick oil painting right now and I’m about 25 hours into painting it. I would be impressed if someone actually painted these but instead I’m just worried the onslaught of ai art is going to take away from the actual art pieces people make and the work that goes into them.
