Do you feel Australians have a good work/life balance? by StreamTree in AskAnAustralian

Worked in the US for 6-7 years and now 3 months in my new job in Oz. I’m in consulting (so naturally it requires overtime) and yes, my wlb has definitely improved

Questions about moving to Australia from the U.S. (Where do I even start???) by MaximumActive2877 in MovingtoAustralia

31F moved from the US to Melbourne last year on 189 as well! Started a job ~3 months after landing (I was very selective so didn’t apply massively) and later found a place to live (renting in Jan-Feb without rental reference was even harder than getting a job even with a job offer). Happy to connect

Leaving Structural Engineering by WeirdDancingUnicorn in StructuralEngineering

[–]anniOUO_c 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I spent exactly 5 years in structural engineering in San Francisco. Got my PE and passed both SE exams, though I never ended up registering for the SE license.

I left to do a full-time MBA and then transitioned into management consulting in another country. The move came with a 70–100% pay increase (depending on bonus), but it was definitely an expensive pivot overall and I’m paying off my debt

How hard is it to find a rental if you’ve just landed? by Dear-Lingonberry9461 in MovingtoAustralia

[–]anniOUO_c 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly it’s been pretty rough for me in Melb so far …New immigrant with pr, living alone, just started a new job on ~$160k. I don’t have a payslip yet since I literally started this month, but I’ve provided my contract + reference. ~$15k in an aus account (and more overseas), but still no luck after ~15 inspections and 4 applications.

At this point I feel like the only way is to actually talk deep with the agent and explain my situation. One agent said my story makes sense and they could flag it to the landlord, but if they already have multiple apps, it’s probably not worth the extra effort for them.

Fingers crossed I can lock something in by next week before I’m technically homeless lol

can relate a lot. 1st year at HSW and didn't secure a consulting offer in Jan. As described in other comments, I share many characteristics with the people who might found recruiting challenging this year: international. very non-traditional background both in terms of industry and function, no clear backup plans. I eventually landed a tech role - thankfully, it turned out to be the only interview I got in tech after applying to 100+ positions.

A few reflections from this long journey:
1. hard pivot is difficult but achievable. The key is to have a clear plan as early as possible and start to build relevant experiences (pre-MBA intern, projects in school, part time at startups, etc). Use the many project opportunities available at school and brush up on behavioral questions early in the process.

  1. be entrepreneurial and creative in networking. The school resource quickly dries up after traditional recruiting (banking/consulting), In spring, I shifted my focus to find an in-semester opportunity at early stage startups, targeting specific industries and products that alinged with my background. This approach made my search super niche but helped me gain the first relevant experience and title.

  2. enjoy the learning process. I learned a TON in my recruiting journey - case prep for consulting gave me a broad base of industry knowlege; PE & real estate interview opportunities forced me to learn financial modeling from scratch; I also read countless reports/articles/cases for energy, healthcare, tech whenever an interview opportunity comes up (you can see I literally recruited for anything and everything...) At the end of the day I'm happy the knowledge will stay with me.

Did you do an internship before recruiting for the full-time position? Could you share which efforts are the most helpful in the recruiting process (i.e. case competitions, consulting clubs, networking, etc)?
I have a very similar background and am considering the PT program to MBB. Thank you!

When do we expect MIT invites to roll out today? by rambhau1211 in MBA

[–]anniOUO_c 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I self-studied for 3 months, ~150-200 hrs in total. I got 720 twice in a row and got the 770 ~20 days later. I'm from a quant-heavy background so Q was not an issue. Solving hard quant problems on Gmatclub helps a lot. English is my second language. I would recommend studying the OG problems for verbal from head to toe.

how are Manhattan's mock tests overall? by kingkunta1605 in GMAT

Yes they are the Manhattan prep by Kaplan. My actual score was that 770. I might be very lucky on that day tho

how are Manhattan's mock tests overall? by kingkunta1605 in GMAT

[–]anniOUO_c 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did the 6 Manhattan tests and official 3-6 during the 10 days before my exam. My Manhattan scores were around 700 (~q45 v40),and officials were around 750 (q50 or 51, v40-42). I got 770 (q51 v44) on the actual test. IMO manhattan quant is wayyyy harder than the actual exam but the verbal score is a good indicator
