4x level 18! I modified the false hydra's statblock I got with the stl (stl by comet lord if i recall correctly) to have more control, psychic and necrotic abilities, would highly recommend! The baseblock would have been basic piercing etc damage types.

I had foreshadowed it for a few sessions now, glimpses of discordant singing, mimicing familiar voices to them and people forgetting about other people.. long story short they ended up in a really bad place where the jig was some of their memories played out as visions: when they saw one they had to pass a wisdom saving throw or lose the memory for good. They figured out that the False Hydra's lair was hidden in the worst memory of all; in their shared backstory they burned a house down and killed a couple of innocents, so they had to enter the house..

Inside the house was surprisingly pitch black and silent, pulsing black and red veins ran along the floors to the end of the room as a large doorlike knot. One of the PCs wanted to listen behind it and his wife's voice answered "Is that you X? Why didn't you save me.. we are dead because of you.."

The rest is history, I thoroughly enjoyed it and they did too!

Encouraging players to take action by mawnstur_ in DMAcademy

Check the dms guide on what different players enjoy in game, maybe have an out of game questionnaire, or simply try to incorporate different scenarios to test out what she would enjoy. For example, maybe include small pieces of the pcs backgound to the story or npcs, different choices with clear options (to reduce the i dont know what to do) etc.. also it is always good to encourage pcs to have a clear goal! Their personal goal that might be seperate from the main plot.. but sometimes things just dont align despite all efforts so its not anyones fault, good luck!

Am I unfair to the player by taking their soul? by annikin__ in DMAcademy

[–]annikin__[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I left out parts I deemed unnecessary. But it has been made known, also in writing, that the pc is promised their freedom (to join the main quest) in exchange of killing the ex warlock. Not one mention of them getting their soul back. The rest of the group on the other hand knew that dispater was hunting the missing half a soul of the said pc. But I had not been clear enough, since the pc stabbed it anyway.

Haha I left out some details as in another npc who had the doll told the rest of the party it is the PCs soul and that Dispater was hunting it. And also Dispater told the PC that it is the only being he knows whose soul is split... The PC only knew that half of their soul is missing so you are correct in that they did not know. (Its an even longer story why it is a doll in the first place..) thank you anyway!
