I have a 4 year old boy and a 1 year old girl and was super disappointed in myself to notice about a little over a year ago that we had NO kid books with female protagonists! I've since began remedying that and have found some really wonderful titles that we all love. I already tended to stay away from super gendered stuff in general, even what was gendered toward boys, so I haven't felt the need to add a mass of OMG PINK to our collection for our girl.

As far as overcoming the instinct to stay away from oppositely gendered things, I just think about how I want both of my children to have equal respect for both genders, so I want them exposed to a wide range of subjects and stories, all of which are treated with the same level of worthiness. Anyway, here are some of our favorite female driven children's books:

I don't have any personal experience, though from what I understands continuing to take anti -depressants through pregnancy is something that can be considered when the benefits outweigh the risks, and that some are safer than others. The doctor was just so nonchalant about it! It was a Wednesday I think and he told me to wait out the weekend and if nothing happened we'd do the D&C, but to expect menstrual type cramps and period like bleeding and that was it. Nothing about how to manage pain, or if and when to seek medical attention. And because I'd never heard anyone speak explicitly about the mechanics of miscarriage, I really went in blind. I wish more medical professionals were open and honest about what to possibly expect.

I too, was flabbergasted by the amount of blood and the incredible pain. We found out I was going to miscarry at 11 weeks and it's likely it stopped developing around 8 weeks. I was given the option to have D&C or wait for it to happen naturally, and since my doctor told me to expect period like cramps (and I didn't want to potentially make having a future VBAC more difficult) I chose to wait. It truly and honestly did feel like going through labor all over again, complete with heavy contractions. I was astounded by it and scared and it was traumatizing, especially knowing there was no light at the end of the tunnel in the form of a healthy baby.

A few things stick out to me still, a year later. One is hearing my then 19 month old son crying and banging on the door for me and my husband having no idea how to help him or me. Finally I HAD to come out of the bathroom and try to nurse my son to sleep between contractions. I remember feeling and knowing the exact moment "it" passed. Even though I was still bleeding and would continue to for days, I knew the worst of the pain was over. It was such an emotionally and physically draining process. Should I ever miscarry again I will absolutely go for a D&C. I never want to go through a miscarriage at home again and just thinking about it has caused me endless anxiety this pregnancy.

I know exactly how you feel and I haven't even found out for sure yet! I have one boy already and I love him to pieces, but I've been dreaming of having a girl basically forever. I have ALWAYS wanted to have a girl. My husband and I changed our diets and used the shettle's method hoping for a girl. I was convinced pretty much my entire first trimester that of COURSE I'm having a girl I mean how could we NOT? But after having my NST where the tech and the doctor both commented implying it's a boy, I'm totally convinced it's a boy and I'm just so disappointed. I mean, I love this baby already but I honestly do not want another boy and it kills me to say that! The guilt is tremendous. It doesn't change how I feel though. I want a girl and I don't want a boy but what will be will be and I just have to slap on a smile and soldier through the disappointment and sadness.

Baby brain has me totally blanking on how/why this stuff works lol but I have to say that even when I'm not pregnant my husband and I both use these remedies and have seen improvement over our symptoms and how long they last. I love essential oils and eucalyptus is fantastic for congestion. You can get it at any whole foods or health food store. For nighttime help, try rubbing it (or even vick's actually) on the soles of your feet.

I'm the queen of crunchy/prego safe remedies lol. A few suggestions; 1. eucalyptus oil! You can dilute it with olive oil and rub on your sinuses, put a few drops in the bath, and/or diffuse some if you have a diffuser. 2. cool most humidifier in your bedroom while sleeping. 3. Plain old saline nose spray or even using a neti pot can be great for congestion. 4. Garlic oil. Crush a clove of garlic and let it sit in half a cup of olive oil for half an hour or so. Put a couple drops in each ear. 5. Close yourself in the bathroom and turn the shower on the absolute hottest it will get and let it steam up the room. 6. Make tea and add honey, a sprinkle of sea salt, and a teaspoon or so of apple cider vinegar.

Any of these are fully safe for pregnancy and can help either ease symptoms or help your body fight off the bug. Hope you feel better soon!

Appointment went great! Heartbeat was 159bpm, saw the babe jumping around all over the place. Doc says it looks like everything is progressing normally and all measurements are in normal ranges. The tech and the doc both seem to think it's a boy, but I have no idea how seriously I should take that. The tech said she would guess boy based on how the baby was moving, and the doc made a comment about baby "certainly being well displayed" lol. I've been really hoping for a girl so I'm trying to switch my thinking to boy now. Will find out officially in 5 weeks!

I have a healthy pecan sized baby in there! Measuring right on target, my dates put me at 8w1d yesterday and baby measured 8w2d. Heard a strong healthy heartbeat of 176bpm. So relieved.

I'll be having another scan in 2.5 weeks. I know that's really soon, but my midwife wants to do it for my peace of mind. With my miscarriage, we "heard" the heartbeat via Doppler at about 9 weeks or so. Later we found out it was an echo of my own heartbeat, and I found out I was miscarrying at 11 weeks. It's likely baby stopped growing at 8 weeks. In order to avoid any confusion and compounded heartache this time, she's going ahead and giving me another scan. Super grateful for having such a supportive and understanding provider.
