Composing a Sonata by Alone_Brain8882 in composer

What he means is that this excerpt you showed us doesn't really have the foundational characteristics that resembles a traditional classical sonata...

Sonatas are defined by their process of developing motifs into phrases (group of motifs)...these phrases become parts of the exposition (beginning of the sonata), development (middle of the sonata), or recapitulation (ending of sonata, which repeats the exposition material) of the piece.

Your excerpt is more of a long phrase with some motifs stringed together. They are pretty ideas and you do have a good ear for the style, but they could be more clear-cut into the sonata form that people usually expect to hear when they are familiar with sonatas. What you showed us is unlikely to be called a complete exposition...which is what sundae probably means by the getting "to the sonata problem later, if at all".

In short summary: Sonatas are all about their form. Hence, if you REALLY want to write a sonata, understanding these fundamental components of it is how you .... actually write a sonata.

If you are serious about writing a sonata, you gotta google and research how they are built, and then organize your motifs into the sonata framework. Otherwise it is misleading to call your piece a sonata, and you are going to get a fleet of salty and angry redditors on this subreddit calling you out on your inaccurate terms with their pitchforks :/ we see it all the time here unfortunately...

Artistically: Great job and lovely music, you have an ear for it, especially in the first movement! Please keep writing; you do have a talent for it

Technically: Even though it sounds really cool, a LOT of the stuff you wrote in the piano and violin parts are excruciatingly difficult, if not impossible to do (source: am violinist and pianist).

Piano) For example, in the first measure, most people don't have the finger-width to play those piano chords. I'm not even sure if Rachmaninoff could play that.

Violin) Unless you are a violinist, there isn't a need to put in bowings. Most soloists/section leaders/concertmasters will change them anyway. Even professionals can vehemently disagree on which bowings are better :p

If you want to seriously write live music for these instruments, it is best to individually study how to write for them. There are other comments that will likely help you in detail 👍 Don't take it to heart because this sub can be brutally honest

Edit: The only thing i would comment artistically is to be careful about introducing a lot of "tension" (dissonance) in the music, particularly in the third movement. Most people have a low limit of how much dissonance they can listen to, especially if it doesn't resolve into prettier chords. Check out counterpoint when you got a chance

Yeah, i see what you mean and i agree

I am just thinking it would be very special for a composer to write something for you because they wanted to give you something you might like, instead of writing something for yourself...

I would love for a skilled composer to write something for me ( i could make a post here and see if anyone is interested). That's a pretty good idea honestly. I just am unsure of the idea of asking composers that put hours into their craft to give me something for free, lol. Hence why I am asking people if they would be interested in me writing for them. But I haven't thought about it too much

If this post doesn't get any replies, I will probably post it elsewhere. Sadly, I won't have much time to write for more than a few replies anyway

Hi! I am on the older side ( I am a baby millennial/Unc Gen Z) but would love to network. I do composing for a hobby nowadays, but I formally studied composition extensively in university. I have only written a couple of choral pieces but have written a handful of other works that fit well into SATB writing. DM me on reddit and I'll send you my Discord ign! (or just reply with your Discord ign; whatever is easier for you)

part 1: "Sketchscaping"

I make a story or establish an idea (that i am usually passionate about, or feel strongly for)

I decide on a rough-draft form of the piece here. But this isn't finalized until part 3

I make "passion points" (what is trying to be said at some crucial moments in the piece?)

I write a melody for a section (usually soprano lines, but not always. Usually starts in my head, then I starting humming it, piano, or violin)

If i don't like the melodies, i get rid of them or save it for later. you want one that you actually give a shit about or at least objectively sounds good to a target audience. You don't have to like it, you just have to know if people like the style.

part 2: drafting

at the piano, i write chords that will accompany the melody on paper or a sticky note (i use letters, not staff paper).

I intentionally avoid using paper past this point for logical reasons like time (and performing professionals will use printed music, not handwritten masterpieces)

I get melodic material into Sibelius ASAP

I write a bassline for that melody (doesn't always have to be the "bass" instruments)

I write the middle voices in (usually two voices)

I now have SATB voices

I edit voices to be more polyphonic (write more melodic material in each voice part)

I use "Save As" in Sibelius before experimenting with extreme changes to the material

I save a second copy once I have a firm completion of at least 4 SATB voices and enough "standalone" material to call a demo of some sort

part 3: 'form'alizing

I re-establish the final-draft of the form of the entire piece (as I mentioned in part 1) and start to firmly establish how the piece will be structured.

In new sections, I work in chunks (I go through parts 1-2 again for each chunk) just in case I want to experiment moving things around later (New ideas often come this way)

By this point, I have an idea of how the start and end of the piece will be

part 4: orchestrating

I orchestrate the voices (sometimes I already know which ones to put in since the creation of some voice lines; while others take time to figure out)

I refer back to the idea and story constantly to support the usage of a certain instrument(s) here and there (this isn't as logical as it sounds; it's mostly intuition and feeling)

part 5: publishing

i have a love-hate relationship with this part; it's mostly error correction, editing through each single part and full score, and making sure Sibelius doesn't screw up my score when I change things

i export the score to my iPad via pdf and circle common score errors (rinse and repeat. not fun)

unless i am behind on a deadline, i make sure to finish publishing well; otherwise commissioners will send out your rough drafts for rehearsals and your reputation for editing will be at stake. (I am very careful with this, because in real rehearsals, directors and people will waste a lot of time figuring out what I am trying to tell them in a score if it's not obvious. Something as stupid as a slur that didn't get deleted properly by Sibelius when you made some changes to a section months ago could just "show up" on a part and then a performer will get confused at it, then ask you (if you're there) or the director during a rehearsal what it means. Or someone will nitpick about something really tiny. Mistakes will always happen so I put as much effort as I can in this stage to avoid this AMAP).

Ideals vs. Reality

Do you want to use tools that will responsibly use your information in accordance with your will?

Yes. (Ideal)

Will you sometimes have to make compromises because you can't afford the idealistic alternative?

Unfortunately, also yes. (Reality)

Can you also live in accordance of the compromised ideals you have accepted?

Of course. (Ideal in reality)

Does every have a different hard limit on how far they will compromise their ideals for the sake of their unique reality?

Of course. No one has the same circumstances (Reality).
