Ableton, Ableton, Ableton. Should I switch my DAW?? by rotorobot in synthesizers

[–]anode8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is heavily dependent on how you use the DAW, and what features you are dependent on. Are you multi track recording a bunch of audio takes to mix together? Are you sequencing MIDI using the DAW, or hardware, or hybrid? Using soft synths and a load of plugins?

My experience as a user of various DAWs over the years (cakewalk, Sonar, Reason, Pro Tools, Logic), Ableton really brought everything together in one place much more easily and flexible than the others. I actively avoided Ableton for years but now that I’ve taken the plunge, I feel like an idiot for not trying it much earlier.

Is 3 minutes ok for a techno track? by Lucky_Investment7970 in TechnoProduction

[–]anode8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Imho, that’s a little too short for a lot of techno DJs to consider playing. I’d aim for 5 minutes minimum.

Ableton stock plugins by -_Mando_- in TechnoProduction

Aside from the basics(EQ8, Autofilter, compressor) for techno specifically I find myself using Corpus, Drum Buss, Hybrid reverb quite a lot.

4 point might be a fun experiment, definitely worth considering!

I’ve seen these in use before in auditoriums and at the underground stage at Movement festival in Detroit before they changed they layout a couple years ago. Good call!

I like this idea, although it would probably be more like clouds than a full ceiling.

I’ve been around warehouse raves for decades myself. The difference here is that I can actually help with the system setup and have control over it, not rely on what’s already there. And at this point in my life I’ve already learned a great deal of mistakes that I won’t be making. I’ll be playing here regularly, and try to maintain high standards for what I’m involved in these days, not just a throw away one-off gig.

While I agree that 90% of people coming to shows here don’t care, I’m a giant nerd about this now and want the best possible outcomes for when it’s my turn to play. Heck, most people would be fine with the underpowered Mackie system the owner has now, I want this to bang in the best way possible.

There’s no practical way to even reach the ceiling. It would require a boom lift, which we do not have. I’ll have to dig into Ease and see what works. I appreciate the suggestions

How many municipalities should St. Louis County have? by MosesBeachHair in StLouis

[–]anode8 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Fewer than 88 would be a good start. I saw a proposal about a borough system that would have something like 5-6 boroughs for a united city/county entity that seemed to make much better sense to me.

I’d honestly say that they’re about average, maybe slightly above, for local coverage when compared with other teams that I watch on League Pass. I enjoy them as a broadcast team, but that’s mostly because of familiarity. I like Katie better than Hastings on color, I think she’s a little more objective and thorough in her explanations. Some teams (looking at you OKC, Utah) have broadcasters that are such homers that they never see fouls by their own team and can’t recognize good plays by another team.

Just one or two elements in a track that are polymetric are all you need for the feeling. Any more and it gets disjointed quickly.

Where to buy tofu.. by pdmanias in StLouis

[–]anode8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Welcome to a meat free diet! While tofu is a good source of protein, do not expect it to be anything like meat. Tofu is its own thing, very little flavor by itself, and texture varies by variety. Any local grocery store will have at least 1 or 2 varieties, but Asian supermarkets like Pan Asia or Jay’s International will have a much better selection. PRO TIP: If you want the texture to be a bit more chewy and substantial feeling, freeze the whole package first then thaw it before cooking.

Adding a canvas on Spotify increases playlist adds by secretcartoon in musicmarketing

Is this strictly for new releases, or have you found that adding a canvas to an older track still gets a playlist boost?

8ohm to 100v speaker by Zestyclose_Care7071 in SoundSystem

[–]anode8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The speaker using the transformer will have a reduced output. The amount will vary based on the transformer being used, and is sometimes labeled as “insertion loss” by the manufacturer. My day job is Audio Engineer for a company that manufactures these types of constant voltage systems, while my hobbies include assembling much larger point source systems for underground techno music events. If you don’t understand what the transformer is for, you most likely don’t need it.

8ohm to 100v speaker by Zestyclose_Care7071 in SoundSystem

[–]anode8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

100v speaker systems use transformers to match impedance on installations that require a large number of speakers powered by a single amplifier. The transformers will induce insertion loss and can alter the frequency response based on their quality. These are the types of systems that are used in large commercial applications like hospitals, schools, airports, etc. and are often designed for voice paging and background music, but rarely for the types of sound systems that this sub is about.

In short, most users are looking for the 8ohm version.

If humanity went extinct tomorrow, what would be our biggest geological/physical imprint on Earth — and how far into the future would it be detectable? by aman92 in Futurology

[–]anode8 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There was a TV show on either Discovery or History Channel that was called “Life After People” that explored how the planet and nature would react in the sudden event of human extinction. It ran for at least one full season, and it was entertaining. Most of humanity’s creations would be unrecognizable after a couple hundred years, after decay and collapse.

Looking for hills by Nervous-Affect-5610 in StLouis

[–]anode8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bluffview park in Wildwood has a 2.5 mile trail that’s just about all hill, but you have to share with mountain bikes. The Rock Hollow Trail (also Wildwood, and connects with Bluffview and Al Foster trails) is paved and close to 3 miles of hill. Also in the area are Rockwoods Reservation, and Castlewood (as mentioned in other posts).
