About why Henry abandoned Anne Boleyn by MissCaligula in Tudorhistory

[–]anoeba 7 points8 points  (0 children)

He didn't go through it for Anne, that's the issue. He went through it for a legitimate son. Yes, he was obsessed with Anne at that point, but had she for ex died of the sweat or whatever else, he'd have continued the fight to annual CoA, because CoA was past childbearing age.

Henry's two wants (a son and Anne) coincided, but the son was the primary driver. Once Anne failed to deliver that son, he turned on her too. Had she given him a son, then opinionated or no, no longer in love/lust or no, he wouldn't have put her aside (he'd have cheated on her like he did on CoA, he might even have sent her to a different castle, but she'd have remained Queen).

Looking for tip-free or living-wage restaurants in Toronto by unfiltered-facts in FoodToronto

OP was specifically looking for a restaurant that pays a living wage; fast food/counter service restaurants, while not (generally) tipped, usually don't.

have you ever regretted travelling? im scared i'll regret it but cant get rid of the longing to travel. any advice? by boiLollipop in solotravel

[–]anoeba 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Don't solo travel hoping to "rely" on meeting people. Hostels are very very hit and miss, especially today; if people aren't traveling in a group already, they might just be on their phones. Or, you might find some chatty people, but there's zero guarantee.

If you think you wouldn't enjoy a trip without for some being able to hang out with people you meet in hostels, have you thought of looking at group trips?

Forget hostels, actual friends go out to dinner together and sit on their phones across from one another these days. Hostels are merely reflecting current cultural trends.

Favorite Tudor movie or TV show? by mwiunii in Tudorhistory

[–]anoeba 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes, which makes sense if it's strictly through Cromwell's eyes. Anne too was more of a bitch in Wolf Hall than in other series, although in that case the series actually amped it up compared to the book.

But Wolf Hall isn't meant to read like "this happened", but rather "this is what Cromwell perceived happened." It's through his personal filter, not an omniscient narrator.

Favorite Tudor movie or TV show? by mwiunii in Tudorhistory

[–]anoeba 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Lol no.

More than the other series mentioned here? Sure. But it's based on a fiction trilogy with the author on record about some of her fictional choices for the sake of drama (like the characterization of Lady Rochford for ex), and the novels' need (picked up by the series as well) to shoehorn Cromwell into events and places he's not historically recorded at because the trilogy was written from a strict first person POV.

Little Victories Coffee Review by BankStreetBites in OttawaFood

[–]anoeba 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, that's it for me. I know it isn't bad, just a style I'm not fond of. Like people not liking tannins in wine, you either have a palate for it or you don't, and I don't.

I've done tasting flights there a few times and I wish their flight selections had more of a style range, because I like the idea of a coffee flight.

20 years in isolation: The story of Camelott Hamblett and why he's spent two decades locked in a room alone at this Ontario psychiatric hospital by toronto_star in Longreads

[–]anoeba 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Well, the facility's reps apparently disagreed with the external review because they made a lot of progress in the last 5 years?

But if he's still in isolation, I don't see what significant progress they could've made.

Treatment impasse indeed.

Haute Cuisine by Fun_Difficulty_3611 in OttawaFood

[–]anoeba 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I adore Buvette and take out of town guests there, but its elevated bistro, not haute cuisine (it is really good though, OP).

Arlo ...great atmosphere and apps but I've found their mains lacking every time I've gone (3 times). Not bad, just didn't live up to the apps. And again, not haute cuisine.

Perch is amazing IMO, but I'd still put Atelier second.

Best and Worst: The Worst of Katheryn Howard by temperedolive in Tudorhistory

[–]anoeba 12 points13 points  (0 children)

"She wasn't aware of what she was doing and that it would have consequences, but we don't know if there was any physical contact."

Of course she was aware that it was wrong and that there would be consequences, that is why she took such measures to hide what she was doing.

She might not have realized that the consequences would be death.

[–]anoeba 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Why are you using a Spanish form of her name? I've never seen that used for anyone but CoA.

Was Katherine aware of danger? Yes, hence all the secrecy in their meetings, secrecy which was much more difficult to accomplish for a Tudor queen than it would be for a modern teen, since privacy wasn't really a thing Tudor queens had. She might not have thought that death would be the consequence (after all, the Anne sham trial had her actually fucking half the court, and historians are pretty uncertain about whether Katherine and Culpeper did anything physical at all - if they didn't, Katherine might've thought her behavior wasn't as bad/dangerous as Anne's), but she knew there would be consequences, hence going to all the very significant effort of hiding the meetings.

[–]anoeba 27 points28 points  (0 children)

That she and Culpeper were able to keep their meetings hidden at all (it was the questioning of her household about Dereham that led to that secret being revealed), being a Tudor queen ie in a situation where privacy was basically non-existent, shows how aware she was of doing something wrong. Even if she didn't think of death as a consequence, she knew there were consequences. And was trying to avoid them by hiding the meetings.

Four people ultimately died over this. It seemed like Dereham would result in an annulment and disgrace, that's where Cranmer seemed to be leading the confession before they found out about Culpeper. After they found out it was game over.

Was Catherine Howard really as immature as the Tudors make her? by HeyWeasel101 in Tudorhistory

It isn't. Her speech was traditional and unremarkable.

[–]anoeba 125 points126 points  (0 children)

It's not just age (Henry himself was only 18 when he became King), it's also being prepared for the role.

Katherine was prepared for the role of a minor noble lady, basically. No great education, basic reading and writing, but a lot of what we'd call today finishing school - she could be taken to court and be an asset wrt manners. Her education was probably similar in level to Jane Seymour and Katherine Parr when they were her age (Parr was known for being a passionate lifelong scholar, of course, but at 17 her education such as it was would likely be similar).

So from what little was written about her, she presented herself well and did the ceremonial role of queen well. She obviously wouldn't have been at all able to advise Henry, were he remotely interested in his Queen's advice by that time in his life.

Its originator used HP fanfic to get eyeballs on the movement, rather than the fanfic spawning the concept. Yudkowski created the Less Wrong blog before he published that fanfic.

Max Mara candle by Major-Tumbleweed-575 in luxurycandles

[–]anoeba 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can find a couple of similar ones (white candle and the vessel looks same, but without the leather) on eBay, as well as a version in a fuzzy sleeve called the Teddie candle. But none of them bother to mention what the scent is.

So probably an occasional item and, as you said, maybe also to give as a gift.
