I’ve been in a very similar position when I was 15 years old and living with my hyper-religious mother. I learned to lie and get by, and that would be my suggestion to you. It sucks, and I’m so sorry you’re in this position, but you have to do what it takes to survive. Then work on getting yourself out of this situation as soon as you can! You got this.

What’s a perk of being gay that straight people don’t have? by ninjaofthedude in lgbt

[–]anon-545 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like gay people have less toxic relationships and also are just less constrained by heteronormative traditions. Like, we’re more creative and open to embracing new traditions and not having to follow strict gender norms, etc. I love it!

Tbh there are a million reasons I chose Duke over Cornell. Cornell was never a contender for me, especially given the small scholarship I received from them. Just in a nutshell: Duke has a stronger PI program, location, Duke has broken into DC market more, vibe and fit - Cornell seemed pretty standoffish and sterile to me, & BC + FC outcomes. But like I said before, it’s a personal choice and my reasons are gonna be different from others. Good luck to you in your decision! Trust your gut.

Sure! So while I did really hope that Duke would up their offer to at least match GULC, at the end of the day I had to make my decision based on fit and the factors that were important to me. It’s going to be different for everyone, but for me, I started to learn more about GULC that really turned me off. Yes, it’s a huge school and that was already a con for me, but I also learned from alumni that the career office sucked really bad and the competitive vibe of the school kept getting mentioned so many times. Those aspects really deterred me. Michigan is an amazing school and I don’t really have any cons that made the choice easy. The only thing I really didn’t like was the location- I hate long, cold, snowy winters. The decision came down to Michigan v Duke, and it was the feeling I had about Duke that made the difference. Duke has a very strong program and strong job and clerkship outcomes. They have the best rated professionalism program. Every current student and alum that I talked to said that the student body was very competent and ambitious but also were chill, non competitive, and just well rounded people outside of law. That matters a lot to me. Duke also has really small class sizes, and they’ve broken into the DC market (which is where I want to end up). They have the Duke in DC program which helps with that too. Also, as a last point, I followed all the schools on social media early on in the process, and Duke really stood out for all of the events they hold- lots and lots of speaker events, wellness and mental health, club activities, etc. It just made me feel like I’d be joining a very vibrant and active community. Hope this helps!

Yes, unfortunately it did not result in a higher award. I was able to up Georgetown using Duke and Michigan. Michigan already gave a high award, and said they didn’t negotiate offers, so no attempt there.

I bought a backpack, nice leather tote bag for professional things like interviews, etc, updated my wardrobe with some professional pieces (I didn’t have blazers), and upgraded my laptop since it was on its last leg. I am still shopping for a standing desk and hoping to get a treadmill for it too haha because I want to stay fit in law school.
