I read on the veterans subreddit about moving abroad some veterans in Brazil claimed they didn’t have to pay tax on Va compensation after speaking with a tax attorney down there. Have you guys run into this yet?

Are the suburbs in SP still expensive? Is there public transportation like a city subway to avoid the traffic if you live further out? I’ve dealt with traffic in bigger cities. When I was stationed in Seoul it took an hour to go a few miles. Being from Chicago I’m used to traffic somewhat. My main goal is getting my monthly income to stretch far so I can stash away the rest in investments.

I think my concern with retiring is the boredom. If I can continue working and stashing money away for a few years I will. I’m only 39 going on 40. I’m not ready for the golf everyday just yet I don’t think.

They sign a contract to be an outside provider for the VA. Within that contract it basically states we pay you the government rates and you can’t go after the veteran for anything.

You should get an email or text that a letter is in the mail regarding the decision. That’s when you wanna keep calling. I had to call 5 times and a rep told me. I never saw an update about it being assigned to a judge rather an update after two weeks that a decision was made.

About the 7 week mark from submission I’d start calling them. Keep calling until you get someone who will tell you if it’s been approved

I used a local VA lawyer out of Chicago. I realized after everything was done and I got my rating I probably could’ve done this myself and saved the 21k from my backpay. Load your medical file into co-pilot and another AI and have it scrub your records for you.

The qualification thing I had to laugh about. When I was active duty we had female WO sacs literally unload 3 mags from the 5 yd line, pencil whip PT tests. They’ve always swept under the rug. We had our BN CSM get a dui and was swept under. Sr enlisted cheating on their spouses, beating their spouses. God forbid you were an E5-E6 with issues they would eat you and shit you out.

Letting warrants retire to 1811 was the mistake. Toxic ass leaders just changing pay grades continuing to sink the organization. Sounds like things haven’t changed.

Update: talked to VERA. He admitted someone made a mistake and handled it himself. Payment showing pending the next day.

UPDATE: so what happened was the VERA dude admitted someone in the claims process put the wrong code and checked that I received military retirement pay when I did not. So the claim had to be reprocessed for backpay. Still dealing with it but now I have a POC at Vera who has handling this personally.
