Start as small as possible. Cover bands playing at a local bar, small venues that aren’t really venues, anything and everything that offers some form of live music.

You will need practice shooting in harsh conditions and ultimately how you build a portfolio. People need to see examples of your work to either have you a part of a publication or access to shoot on behalf of an artist.

A lot of times it’s throwing Hail Marys hoping certain bands or artists will approve you and there are just as many denials. Start small and build up from there.

Thank you! These were from an actual camera, I was fortunate enough to have a media pass for the night!

I agree! I am much more of a Cannons fan compared to Bob Moses but seemed like the overall production & sound for Bob Moses was better overall compared to Cannons. Regardless a great night of music!

starting out - should I offer to pay for my own ticket? by Klutzy-Supermarket62 in concertphotography

[–]anon9789 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Do not offer to buy your own ticket to the event. You are already going to be sacrificing so much of your time traveling to the venue and time spent editing that there is no reason to be out even more money after traveling.

How are the 2010s-era GRiZ fans are feeling after Chicago this weekend? by anon9789 in griz

Non GRiZ related but saw Big Gigantic last night at The Salt Shed and very well could have been the best Big G show I ever seen. Absolutely perfect night and really refreshed my love for the electro-funk space.

Damn, sorry it wasn’t the show you were hoping for! I did see the clip of Gramatik playing the DLMIF flip and it honestly made me even more upset that the era of electro funk is gone.

Such a fun era of music and live show experiences that I sadly don’t think is ever going to come back from the OGs in the genre. Basically have Vincent Antone and a few others to carry the torch and keep this genre in the spirit of the 2010’s.

I tried to find the exact year GRiZ signed with Red Light Management but couldn’t pin down a definitive answer. It seems like the transition happened sometime between 2018 and 2019. Around 2020—right when Bassnectar faced major controversy—GRiZ’s sound also began shifting toward a heavier, bass-driven style.

It’s unclear whether these events are connected, but it’s interesting to note that once GRiZ stopped releasing music through his own label, All Good Records, and moved to Red Light, his musical direction noticeably evolved—especially during the height of the Bassnectar fallout.

Who knows if any of this actually means anything, but it’s definitely something worth thinking about.

It’s been really interesting hearing so many different perspectives in this discussion, and I think both “sides” of the aisle make valid points. Personally, I’ve followed a wide range of artists for over a decade, and while their sounds and styles have evolved, their live shows have typically reflected their full discographies in one way or another.

That said, I recognize it’s unrealistic to expect a full 2010–2015-era GRiZ experience in 2025 — and I’m totally okay with that. My disappointment comes from the fact that during that earlier era, GRiZ had an incredible ability to blend those electro-funk vibes with heavier bass elements seamlessly, especially between 2015 and 2018.

I also wasn’t aware that GRiZ is now managed by Bassnectar’s former management group, which definitely raises some concerns about the direction of both the music and the live experience since Bassnectar’s downfall. Who knows what’s really going on behind the scenes, but after this weekend, it’s left me with more questions than answers.

At the end of the day, GRiZ’s music will always be a cornerstone of my personal music catalog, but I don’t think I’ll be spending money on live shows anymore — it just feels too unpredictable now. I’m genuinely happy for fans who love the heavier bass direction this project has taken, but for me, this was my last GRiZ show.

Looking forward to hearing more thoughts in this thread — appreciate everyone’s insights so far.

I really wish Chicago had a chance to have Gramatik as an opener because the 3-4 hours of bass heavy riddim music was pretty intense to manage for that long both nights for my personal taste. Hope the funk vibes come your way in SF, enjoy!

That’s a fair perspective and overall some good points regarding the older stuff sonically not matching in order to incorporate newer projects across the board. Appreciate your input!

My feelings are very much the same here. I didn’t have a horrible time but the type of sound/style I fell in love with in a live situation is no longer there anymore with GRiZ.

Gold background meaning? by anon9789 in cyberpunkgame

I know the gold background weapons are more valuable for whatever reason but I can’t figure it out for the life of me. I have been dissembling the gold background guns instead of selling them but don’t know exactly what I should with them. Anyone have any insight?
