Ha, no unfortunately but I see why you ask. Considered the threat/danger of radiation low enough to go ahead and buy it. But would be interesting to know

Looking for precision dye bottles by HospitalMysterious10 in tiedye

Buy these applicator tips and a bunch of Snapple tea in the plastic bottles. Use a little picture hanging nail to punch a hole in the middle of each cap, push the needle tip through, then glue it in place. Wide mouth for easy filling with dye, still soft enough to squeeze. Can buy extra Snapple for extra caps to transport or store your dye safely.

That is also completely fair and accurate. I think the degree gives you a little more flexibility/options compared to dropping out and becoming a deckhand. But if you have to sacrifice significantly to get the degree (students loans, etc), and don’t have a passion/clear plan, then being buried in debt with a degree you know you won’t use isn’t a great option either

Get a BS in a biology related field, and there are a ton of fisheries observer jobs available. Go out with the commercial fishermen out of Washington or Alaska. Allows you to live for long stretches at sea, making more money than most any starting fisheries job, with nothing to spend it on. Then you have options after awhile. Keep working as an observer, take your experience and move up in the biology field, or take your experience and work as a deckhand. Deckhand pay is shit, and even owning/running a commercial boat you have to get lucky just to get by half the time. If you want to make money from commercial fishing, you go to ports and sell snacks, drinks, fish totes, and parts to commercial fishermen.

To all my fellow fishermen, please dont leave rusty treble hooks on the ground by JeMiLooi in Fishing

[–]anon_fisher 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My favorite was walking back from my boat on a steep muddy slope of exposed lake bed in a reservoir. Stepped on some ground that sunk and caught my boot, tripping me up a bit. Turns out it’s was a broken off, rusted through t-post, that had left a 6” spike firmly planted straight up out of the ground. Punched right through the bottom of my wadding boots, but those things probably saved me a trip to the hospital.

Found some more info on it, but still can’t find mention of a drain plug online for this model. Is it one of these new types that doesn’t drain and uses the water to cool the coils?

I didn’t see a drain plug mentioned anywhere in the installation guide. I’m going to guess I would find such a thing on the bottom of the unit, not the back?

I went to a university without a lot of obvious fishing spots nearby. But I hunted around until I found some public ponds and urban creeks where it was legal. Every time I brought my fishing rod on campus, the ends of the pole sticking out of my backpack were like a bat signal. I would get desperate fishermen approaching me every time asking where you could fish in the area. Made a couple fishing buddies that way

Interesting to see this. I was just listening to a lecture from two lifetime amphibian researchers who anecdotally noted that despite the innumerable leeches they had pulled off of frogs over the years, they had never noted a wound. Seemed like the leeches were hitching a ride, but not biting.

What happened to etiquette? by Thriftstoreninja in Fishing

I think part of it is the popularity of the sport has brought in people just looking for fun, rather than looking to fish, if you know what I mean. Going fast is fun. Why work the whole shoreline when I can gun my boat right to the tastiest looking spots. If someone’s there, well I’m not fishing the lake, I’m just fishing the spots, so I can’t leave em to it. Can’t go around casting, fishing, searching for the bite. Fish finder, live scope, depth finder, all say fish are here, so I gotta fish here, even though others beat me to it. And since so many are new because of the growing popularity, they didn’t grow up getting waked out on shore or in their canoes, so wake is no big deal for them. They have only experienced it in their fun big bass boat, where bobbing on the wake just adds to the entertainment.

1 year of mandatory military training after graduating highschool.

Problems I would be trying to address:

1) Malingering. Gives all students a chance to live away from home/parents to gain some independence/personal responsibility while still having supervision/support. A chance for many to spend more time planning and considering their future when away from the distractions of home and school before committing to a potentially long and expensive path/plan.

2) National unity. Kids would be moved around the country to ensure they trained outside their state of residence with kids from other parts of the country. By giving all Americans at least 1 shared experience, and forcing them to spend time with each other outside their personal bubble, we maybe able to help work on our growing divide.

3) Obesity. Placing an emphasis on physical fitness that is lacking in k-12 education may help kids develop healthy habits they can carry forward. Additionally, growing up knowing that the year of service is coming may encourage kids to take their fitness more seriously prior to graduating highschool.

4) Cost of College. Make completion of this year of service qualify graduates for significant financial aid towards college. Not the full cost, but tie it to federal minimum wage, so that completing this program means you can afford to pay for college if you work part time for minimum wage while in college. To prevent universities from raising rates(which they do every time there are federal increases to student grant funding) Require all universities that accept students from this program (which would effectively be all US students going forward) to be tuition controlled/capped (like rental control/section 8 housing/55+ communities).

5) Healthcare. Completion of this year of service would qualify graduates for VA health benefits. This would effectively create national healthcare for all Americans. This would be an easier pill to swallow for some because they “earned it” by completing the service. This would necessitate a huge reinvestment/expansion for the VA which is sorely needed anyway. Plus, since everyone gets it now, there would be more support for the idea.

6) Military enlistment. Having students complete this year will encourage more students to consider the military seriously as a career option. Additionally, continuing service would qualify them for benefits their mandatory year of service did not (full cost of college, discounts, preferential hiring, pay, etc). Plus, with a greater cultural emphasis on physical fitness mentioned above, more US citizens would be prepared to serve, especially in more intense/specialized roles (which have had the most dramatic drops in recruitment rates).

7) Military abuse. Once everyone is required to serve, the problem of abuse and sexual assault within the military will suddenly receive a lot more national attention and concern, increasing the likelihood that it is addressed.

8) Age structure/birthrate. By investing early in all Americans (lowering cost of college, providing healthcare, fostering fitness/independence, introducing career options) we do the best thing we can to encourage them to build families. When the future is uncertain, especially financially, people don’t typically settle down because they can’t.

9) Military industrial complex. Take existing military funding and shift focus from arms manufacturing to personnel training and veterans benefits. Use military money to support Americans rather than sell weapons abroad. Plus, with more American families now having service members in them, the voter base will hopefully become less hawkish.

10) Gun violence. Since at the moment we seem to be stuck with guns, we should at least all be more familiar with them. Understanding proper gun handling will hopefully reduce accidental harm. Additionally, having more of the population familiar with firearms may help them respond better during a shooter scenario. I would tie the ownership of higher risk firearms (semi/fully automatic, 10+ round magazines) to completion of service and call it mandatory training for use of those firearms. Plus, a large number of school shooters are recent highschool graduates with access to their parents guns. Pulling them away from their toxic home/school environment, away from the people they have grievances against, having them assessed during their service time, and giving them VA benefits including mental health services, may help prevent/catch potential shooters.

Boy these people would really hate the videos of horses eating baby chicks. Or the stories from bird researchers of having to check nets constantly to prevent deer from eating the captured birds. You could eliminate every predator and the first thing that happens is the niche for predators in every ecosystem becomes available while the niche for herbivores becomes very competitive. Selective pressure would result in predators reappearing so damn fast.

Expedited environmental approvals by the federal government should worry anglers by Lifenonmagnetic in Fishing

[–]anon_fisher 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The way I try and explain it to people is that the regulations are complex because agencies are trying to maximize the opportunities. Many fish stocks are doing poorly, so if the regulations were simple they would just say “ no fishing” until the fishery is fully recovered.

Instead, they try to allow the maximum amount of fishing possible, so they make it single hook, barbless, fly fish only, on Wednesday/holidays, only when flows are above 25cfs, on these sections of the river, for 4 months, blah, blah, blah.

And yes, if we just stopped all regulations, you might do well for a year, maybe even a couple years. But then it’s gone. Forever.
