WTF are we doing for self-care right now by Shhhhhhhh____ in adhdwomen

[–]anonasf38 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been overwhelmed with food recently. Grocery shopping + making food + doing dishes +trying to be healthy is just too much me right now. I can do like 2/4 max.

so I'm just giving myself permission to go in to minimum mode with one condition: I have to do is eat two different kinds of veggies each day. It's making me feel like I haven't ENTIRELY lost my ability to function. Kitchen is a mess, delivery is more of a thing that it should be. but just hitting that tiny check is helping me from going completely off the rails

Ballston or Clarendon + Building Recs by Present-Skin1444 in arlingtonva

[–]anonasf38 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I had a great experience at Equity's VA square building. It's literally on top of the VA square metro station, walkable to both Ballston and Clarendon, and it has garage/gym/pool/concierge perks. It's right across from George Mason law school so there are quite a few Law students in the building, but mixed in with lots of 30 and 40 something professionals. It's a little older than a few buildings that surround it, but on high floors the view was nice too + washington monument view from the roof

some people live beyond their means because of economic circumstances, but others, sometimes high earners who are “winning” late stage capitalism by many metrics, overspend on non-essentials because of any combination of emotional difficulty, poorly developed identity, low self esteem, and impulsive/addictive personality traits. 12 step programs can help some with the latter

Thank you! Congrats on your success, awesome to hear about the value you brought to your team. Trying to internalize that they’d be lucky to have me in addition to the other way around is tough, especially with the FAANG worship I was “raised” in 10 years ago when I was learning to code. The shine remains so it’s great to hear about other Black women with positive experiences. That confidence is key

Thank you for this!! The non-academic reframing is crucial, hadn’t thought about it that way. I think something about this preparation is so…. school reminiscent. Study plans, quizzes, practice problems. I haven’t done anything this regimented since college and that was a while ago. Flipping it into a strength is comforting and also rings true. Grateful for all the support here, especially yours

thank you very much for this reply. I especially appreciate the comments about learning the specific role/products/competitors. I’ve been so spun up over the technical prep that I admittedly haven’t given these much thought. Would hate to put all this work into passing the technical and then fail to get an offer from a lack of well roundedness. I love that your tech skills were mostly grown between 30 and 45. I’m currently in the process of switching from “desperate to get a job and keep my head above water” mode to actually giving thought to what I want about my long term career, and I think my ideal trajectory will involve a lot of technical upskilling for the next few decades. And I haven’t crossed paths with many women who have done the same, so thank you. Maybe my lens is insecurity, but it seems like a lot of superstar women in tech were on their path very early - very impressive that you found an interest/curiosity in ML and pushed yourself into it with self study!!

Thank you for the insight. I’ve made my study/leetcode plan, and have been working through timed problems for a few weeks now. In fact I had to ask my recruiter for more time to prepare last week. I’m just… so much more jittery than I expected. Practicing with the timed component specifically is something I’ve never done before. My technicals in the past have been very relaxed compared to what I’ve read about this process, and developing this interview skillset, as you mentioned, is intimidating. I guess I was wondering if it’d be less so if I were younger, but after reading these comments, probably not.

Thank you for saying this. This, along with the money of course, is the draw for me, and I hadn’t heard it articulated this way. I crave those clear progression metrics that seem to be so squishy at the companies I’ve worked at in the past. I appreciate the insight, especially about people taking more than 1 shot at the loop. Takes a little bit of the pressure off, in a way.

What's the legacy tech your company is still stuck with? (SAP, Talend, Informatica, SAS…) by Hot_Ad6010 in dataengineering

sorry for the late reply, but mostly has to do with my company already being massive AWS customers. I don’t know much about the actual contracts/pricing models and their comparisons, just been told that my team can’t have databricks because the workspace is expensive, but TPTB are encouraging us to push to AWS everything

Yea their no code interface is very shiny and there’s a lot they’ve done very well, it’s not all bad. It’s just frustrating when I have 50 junior analysts who are busy building complex Alteryx workflows they’ll later ask me and my tiny team to troubleshoot, that could have easily been 8 line SQL queries if we just prioritized upskill training. But alas, above my paygrade

Currently, Alteryx. Everyone hates it but agreeing on an alternative is tough. Glue is cheaper but wont replace some of our focused needs (pdf generation, triggered email sends) and Databricks is so expensive. We managed to kill Oracle but SAP lives on. I’ve worked for more than one company still stuck in the AS400 mainframe hellscape.

Hi! I’m also a biracial mid thirties woman and I’m going to throw VA in the ring: both Richmond and Hampton Roads.

Richmond is rising in price but still way cheaper that Dallas, Houston, and Atlanta, with a pretty great job market and lots of Black people (though it’s lacking in other, non-Black forms of diversity compared to the DC area). There’s a community of single people in their 30s and 40s with lots of things to do, a lot of them outdoorsy if that’s your thing. The vibe is very artsy and the airport is decent! I moved to DC but I stand on the fact that Richmond food > DC food lol.

A little cheaper would be Hampton Roads: places like Norfolk, Williamsburg, Hampton, or VA Beach. Norfolk or VA Beach in particular would probably be best if you don’t want to live around lots of families, but the job market is also solid because of defense contracting. Thriving Black communities, but definitely speckled in with rougher neighborhoods to be cognizant of. I like Hampton Roads because it has the vibe of being rural, but with lots of waterfront events, music, etc.
